*_IMPORTANT UPDATE / CHANGES_* The March 2023 Quality of Life update made some big changes to the frequency of hound (and crockodog in SW) attacks in the single player version of the game (and DST too), making the chart I put at around 4:50 now obsolete. Based on information posted on the wiki, as the day count increases, the number of hounds does still increase, but the time between hound attacks also INCREASES rather than decreases. At day 101+ the time between attacks is a variable 11 to 16 days now, but still has between 7 to 10 hounds per attack. A VERY nice change in my opinion!
Hounds. the first time I've got the alarm sound it really scared me. :D and it's true for newbies who don't know the trick got really overwhelmed by hounds late spawns. They're such a bully. (I'm talking about my first play with any guides whatsoever. LOL) Really detailed guides, as always
@@salendrak Good times indeed. XD So sorry I can't join you on stream, because of the time difference here. I want to join though but it's 5 in the morning here when the stream going. TT _ TT
I've died so many times to hounds •́ ‿ ,•̀ I used to play with campfire respawn just because of them. Doing my first world without it now, so far so good
They're one of the biggest challenges to overcome, but once you get used to dealing with them, it almost becomes second nature! Says the guy who regularly starts losing health due to hunger....
After 131 days, I grew overconfident playing Wolfgang. I maxed out on mightiness and equipped myself with a newly crafted ham bat and armor, thinking to just brute force my way through it like I had done for 130 days prior. The game decided to make all but one of the hounds fire hounds. Because there were so many, and I was killing them all in 1 hit, I found myself in the middle of half a dozen dead hound fires and my health melted away before I realized what was happening.
Weirdly enough,Hound Attacks are one of the only few things when first starting out I handled on my own. Pigs and tentacles are your best friends! Thanks for this vid tho
Yeah, a pig village (or even just any random pig) works great against the first several hound attacks. But be careful once Winter or subsequent falls hits with fire hounds!
4:50 Ugh, this chart is giving me war flashbacks. 3 frickin days are you kidding us Klei? Literally unplayable. But seriously, they basically inverted the situation since then, and I'm glad they did. Hounds are obnoxious as it is, but I can handle an occasional attack.
Ooooh - thanks for pointing this out. I forgot to add a sticked comment that the QoL update changed the frequency. But yes - late-game hounds used to be a severe annoyance more than anything, and the frequency of as short as 3 days between attacks was just needlessly punishing and categorically un-fun.
Yeah-- now it starts at 5-8 days and goes up to 11-16 which is less common than it ever was originally. Plus, caving doesn't run the timer anymore. We used to need to have countermeasures within 30 seconds of every sinkhole we wanted to explore because there would always be an attack waiting for us.
Hey it’s me again! Just wanted to mention how all I said in the spring vid of the beginner’s guide series is becoming true. You are growing exponentially! Good job :)
Knowledge and experience! The initial learning curve is pretty steep in Don't Starve, but once you get things down, it's not too bad. Still keep me on my toes sometimes though!
I will share something On my first time playing don't Starve ,On my first year and my first hound attack I build a stone wall around my base to prevent hounds from entering And all of us now it didn't go well
New Player: "Oh hey, I can make walls to protect my base!" Narrator: "Little did the new player know, walls in this game don't keep the monsters out - they keep you IN with the monsters!"
I recently had a very tragic death where I was exploring the map at the beginning of a world, and I was in the desert when I found the hound mound kingdom set piece, right at the edge (yay), to top it off, it was dark, I forgot to remake a torch, I was being chased by 8 hounds, couldn't make a new choice, and got double killed by a hounds and charlie. (Officially labelled as darkness in the morgue but they both hit at the same time). What's worse is that it was a very Interesting world as it was mostly a straight line. Then immediately after I started a new world and I started ona. Small island with nothing on it and no connections to the outside world.
Yeah, I've had similar deaths to that before. Most recent one I can think of was waiting near a campfire at night near a spider forest. Too many spiders got too close, rain was putting the fire out, didn't have time to make torches. Died! That's pretty weird to have an isolated starter island like that though!
Yup, that works too - usually! As you get further and further into the game, it is possible for hound waves (especially in fall and summer with fire hounds) to take down whole herds of beefalo. Also, some worlds won't have very many beefalo to begin with, and might have herds that are too small to handle very many hounds very fast or efficiently, if at all! I think the overall best approach though is to learn how to fight the earlier waves yourself, and then go with tooth traps as the waves get bigger and bigger. VERY fast and efficient, and not at all dependent on world generation quirks!
Finding these very helpful. Can you do one on Sanity? Seems to be the thing I struggle with most. Creeps up one me just when I think everything is going fine. And I am truly baffled by those who actually recommend spending time insane! Whatever you can do to illuminate...
Not sure if I'll do a full guide on it, but really all you need to do is go stock up on cactus from the desert, or find an area with lots of green mushrooms and go pick them all every now and then. Getting a Tam o' Shanter your first winter from the Walruses really makes maintaining sanity trivial, and jerky can also be used. In a pinch you can also just pick flowers, but I generally only do that in remote areas where I'm unlikely to care about removing the butterfly spawners.
if you look at my morgue it's all red hound, red hound, red hound, red hound. stupid hounds. 😄 They love to come while I'm insane fighting shadow creatures. Though this finally explained why by my 1st summer they come faster and faster and seemingly without warning. Now i have to just .. create traps or something to handle them. I assumed the traps lit on fire but your video shows they don't seem to. Sad cause this last run I had a cool base, and next to it a wormhole straight to my summer base in a rocky desert w cactus. so convenient!
Yeah, fire hounds, especially in your base, are no bueno!! Start stocking up on hounds teeth in winter and spring, as even a small handful of them will make fire hounds much easier to deal with. And by the time you start getting fire hounds (assuming a fall start) the hounds waves will have started getting pretty big - so gotta prepare well in advance!!
Nope! Ranged weapons don't put out much damage for how expensive they are and how few uses you get out of them, and making enough walls to keep anything out would take a TON of resources, and get eaten through pretty fast, especially as the attacks get bigger. Walls are pretty much only for decoration, and some niche uses like keeping pigs or bunny men out of their houses 24/7, as well as some strategies against bosses in DST.
Story for anybody to read: I once was on day 70 and with Wolfgang and got the hound warning after that there were 4 ice hounds and 3 normal ones I had 230 hunger and 4 meatballs with darksword, I think you can imagine what happened after. If not, then I kited the hounds and killed the ice hounds 1 by 1
Yup - covered that in my Early-Game Base Building guide. Here's a link to that section: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ocDi0JTeJ3g.html
I'll get to it eventually, but want to finish up with RoG before moving on. Maybe in a couple of months? Still need to do Summer, Caves / Ruins, and Adventure Mode.
Honestly, I've just gotten used to making my bases without it that having it wouldn't really add anything more! And I've watched others using the mod, and while yet it allows you to make perfectly straight rows and get really tight placements, I've never liked the gridline overlay, and even with the mod, that level of precision seems really time consuming. But that's just my personal preference!
From a periodic hound attack?! Or did you just get too close to some hound mounds? Periodic attacks should have that many, unless maybe you turned up one of the world settings?
Yeah, I love putting those in hound-fighting arenas. Though that's a bit more of an advanced thing, but I will probably show that once I've done my Ruins guide.
@@salendrak oh yes they appear in the very late years varglets do and just like the adults they can turn a simple hound invasion to a hound mob and strangely enough if a varg was to spawn underground it will summon depth worms instead of hounds
What?! Summer guide coming out this coming weekend!! Current schedule only lets me get about one guide or playthrough episode per week, and since I have basically 4 different series going, that means each individual series gets a new entry every 4 weeks. Hopefully I'll be able to increase my production schedule at some point!
"The biggest difference is that if you are playing with others, EACH player will get attacked by whatever number of hounds the game decides to throw at you." So... is that just extra for Wes or does he pull hounds from other players? Poor Wes, lol...
I play Shipwreck pocket edition crocodogs replaces hounds and instead of two hit and dodge I use three hit and dodge it's a little hard though thanks I also use this in Shipwreck
Yup - crockodogs are pretty much identical to hounds. Really the only difference is the loot (regular drop more teeth than vanilla hounds) and there are no red ones, instead there are yellow that poison you.
Probably, though my current plan is to move on to Shipwrecked and then Hamlet first. Though once my youngest is no longer in half-day kindergarten in the fall I'm hoping to increase my production schedule, so I might start doing DST along with everything else. We'll see!
@@salendrak i feel like dst first then the dlc's whould be better as there are much more dst players then any of the dlc's and it wont take too many guides becouse most of the basics are already in rog
I always go to the Beefalos because there to much Hounds. And its kinda annoying. So the Video helps me a lot but I should make a tooth trap are..... I have 100 tooths anyway 😂
