If I were to tell you something was 18 inches long, would you be able to picture it immediately? Cats and small dogs are pretty normal things... the only other alternative I can think of is like... a toaster. Or a roll of paper towel. If I were driving I would not be able to imagine 18 inches or 0.4 meters or whatever... tell me cat and I'm just like "oh shit that's a big pothole"

@@theworldoflivvy3150 For me it's on the contrary. If somebody told me "cat sized" I would be unclear whether or not they mean including tail, legs, and head even, but if they say "diameter 30 cm" I can guess pretty well what to expect.

NOAA weather radio has had MUCH better TTS for at least decade now (the worst thing I've heard it say was "Heat stroke is an emergency. Call nine hundred and eleven"). I don't think ATIS is really standardized at all across airports so it's whatever the airport authority decided to buy and keep using as long as they can. Some of the cadence (whatever you call the equivalent of "kerning" between syllables, especially with numbers) is so bad I wouldn't be surprised if it's caused minor accidents with pilots planning for the wrong wind speed.

Probably because the initial report described it as yellow. Could be a scratch-built drone, people often choose yellow for model airplanes. Not your usual DJI consumer drone, for sure.

I mean... "size of a housecat" gives me a more accurate picture of size in my head than "0.4 meters". Plus, saying "size of a housecat" actually gives you both an image of length and height. I also grew up with, own, and regularly hold cats so maybe the size is more standard to me than to most people also i'm canadian so we kind of flip flop between the two systems of measurement constantly won't find anywhere else where people cook food and take body temps in fahrenheit and use celsius for everything else

What tech is there to safely bring down a drone? You'll need to cover a fair amount of area, well beyond the airport grounds themselves.

Maybe it would be more worthwhile to install counter-bird measures, in view of the frequency of bird strikes compared with drone strikes.

​@@j_taylor a few years ago climate protesters kept flying drones around the airports in London to cause disruption. They just brought in the army with jammers that cleared the airspace after a while, and allowed flights to resume. So the tech is there, it's probably just expensive hence why even one of the world's busiest airports next to a major city needed help from the army.

The main problem is collateral damage and other unintended side effects. Can you jam the target drone or hit it with some sort of projectile with negligible risk to other aircraft in the area? Even then, a disabled drone now poses a risk as it plummets to the ground. The risk/benefit analysis will be different for an airport compared to say a military installation facing the threat of explosive-carrying drones.

@@Cyberguy42 Well in my company's case, we actually capture the drone in a net deployed by our drone, so generally no risk to those on the ground. But it doesn't matter because airports in the US don't have any legal authority to interfere with a drone regardless of how it's done. Maybe someday.
