On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at approximately 8:29 PM, the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Lake Zurich Fire Department, and automatic aid fire departments responded to reports of a house that exploded and was on fire at 23525 North Overhill Drive in unincorporated Lake Zurich, IL. The incident occurred in the Forest Lake subdivision.
Outdoor surveillance camera footage provided to Woo-Sung Shim by homeowner Ulises Hernandez - who lives two houses north of the house that exploded - shows kids and residents in shock after the explosion rocked the neighborhood.
Hernandez quickly went outside to see what happened and called 911. The house was immediately engulfed in flames after the explosion.
Emergency crews responding to the incident saw a smoke column in the sky. Lake Zurich firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes and found the single-story home fully involved in flames, Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard told Woo-Sung Shim.
"The explosion leveled the house, unfortunately, and damaged two neighboring houses - a house to the north and a house to the south," Pilgard said. A 77-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the house, was unaccounted for.
Pilgard said firefighters prioritized accounting for the residents of the house that exploded and to check on the neighboring houses.
Firefighters immediately started defensive operations to protect the neighboring houses from fire. "They suffered minimal fire damage. They did suffer some damage from the explosion," Pilgard said. Debris was seen scattered around the area.
Some of the neighbors were inside their houses, while some were outside when the explosion occurred, Pilgard said. All of the neighbors were accounted for and they were not injured.
Lake Zurich FD Battalion 32, who was the incident commander, requested Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Box Alarm #32-2 to the box alarm level at 8:36 PM, which brought fire apparatus from numerous departments, including water tenders, to the scene. The fire was upgraded to the second alarm level at 9:24 PM and ultimately to the third alarm level at 9:38 PM.
Water tenders were requested because the area does not have fire hydrants. Two portable water tanks were set up to establish water supplies, Pilgard said. Firefighters were able to use those portable water supplies to deploy numerous hose lines and fight the fire.
The explosion itself caused damage to a gas meter and natural gas was leaking. Technicians and diggers with Nicor Gas responded to dig into the ground and stop the leak from the gas line.
After the leak was stopped, firefighters fully extinguished the fire at 11:49 PM and started a more in-depth investigation.
In addition to the structure fire box alarm, command requested MABAS Fire Investigation Task Force Box Alarm #32-80 to the second alarm level, bringing in fire investigators from over two dozen fire departments.
In addition to the task force, the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Lake County Sheriff's Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives assisted with the investigation.
In total, 14 water tenders, 16 fire engines, 3 ladder trucks, 5 squads, 5 ambulances, and 14 fire chiefs responded to this incident, Pilgard said.
The body of an adult male was later recovered from the rubble. On June 7, 2024, the Lake County Coroner's Office conducted a dental examination and positively identified the body as the 77-year-old homeowner, Timothy Toczylowski.
Tax and property records show Toczylowski has been living in the house as the sole owner since 1999.
The next day, neighbors paid their respects to Toczylowski by placing flowers against the fences surrounding his leveled home.
Ulises Hernandez, who was the homeowner that provided the surveillance video and called 911, told Woo-Sung Shim that he was inside his house when the explosion occurred two houses down.
He immediately looked for his children and went outside. "That's when I heard people screaming and I looked over and the house was caught on fire," Hernandez said.
"It was a definite explosion because the whole house shook," Hernandez said. Hernandez's family was not injured, but there was debris that landed on their roof.
Hernandez said that the owner of the house that exploded, Toczylowski, was a long-time resident. Hernandez called him a "friendly person" and occasionally had interactions with him. "He was a very nice person," Hernandez said.

My heart goes out to the family who lost a loved one. I remember a house fire in Zion, Illinois back in 1975. A young man, a teenager who smelled smoke on a cold winter’s morning. Thankfully the family was saved by the young man. The elderly man in the house was disabled and couldn’t walk but the young man helped get the elderly man and his two grand nieces out and safe. I was the young man who saved them. That was 1975 when I was 15 years old. About 15 years later I suffered a major loss from a fire too and I’m grateful for the help we got from colleagues and strangers

There are numerous incidents of runaway thermal events occuring due to the use of damaged Li-ion batteries shorting out when being charged. People should always refer to the operator instructions when using all devices that employ Li-ion batteries and follow the safety instructions.

I'm going to keep an open eye in our town here in New Oxford, PA they are changing out gas lines from metal to yellow plastic. It seems they are now doing all the gas pipes to re-pave the main road and side streets. It is a major re-piping. Keeping watchful eye for problems caused by this gas line replacement.

24 seconds worth of tones. Have these fire companies already been alerted prior to the tones? If not, 24 seconds is a long time to delay sending help.
@evad1
@evad1 2 месяца назад
No, they haven't. That is primarily how they are alerted to what the situation is and what is being requested depending on the MABAS card pulled. Unless they've been listening in on other radio comms for the first due chief, dept, company, or equipment, they wouldn't know they're being requested until the page comes in. Many are volunteer in this area and that would be how they are alerted. And picture a page tone, message, page tone message----to each responding agency. That would take even longer. Northern IL developed the MABAS system probably 30 years ago. The systems works.

Hi, the house that exploded and caught on fire is 23525 North Overhill Drive. The initial address of 23549 North Overhill Drive was used because that was given initially to dispatchers at the time of the incident. Ulises Hernandez, the neighbor who had the surveillance video and witnessed the incident, lives north of the victim. I apologize if this is confusing due to the address heard in the fire toneouts. Hi there, the fire department has not yet released the cause of the explosion. However, Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard did say at the scene that this incident is "not necessarily suspicious" (22:56) I would assume it will take a long time before fire officials can definitively determine the cause of the explosion. @TrafficCamWatch 2 месяца назад
Yes they did. You just didn't hear about it because we have the internet now and you can hear about anything very fast. Never forget the 1946 Greenville propane explosion.
@timpula9984
@timpula9984 2 месяца назад
The most common cause of house explosions is a gas leak (natural gas or propane) in the house. The gas builds up in the house and can be ignited instantly by a very simple spark such as - the igniter for a gas appliance, flipping on a light switch, even static electricity. Further, gas is a far more common home heating source today. In 1940 11% of homes were heated by natural gas/propane. Today it is just over 60% and in some states it is as high as 90%. Then add to that the fact that number of housing units have almost doubled between 1970 and 2020 and you have the recipe for a greater number of events. The point below from @TrafficCamWatch is spot on and important. If this explosion occurred in 1970 or even the early 2000's, it is only reported by the local newspaper and/or local TV news. With the internet, particularly social media (including RU-vid), everyone walking around with a camera, what used to be a very local news event, even as recently has 2 decades ago, can now be seen by millions across the globe. Lastly, as soon as you watch one of these events on RU-vid, Facebook, Instagram etc., the algorithms used by those platforms to send you content decide that you want to see home explosion content and they start feeding more of these events to you. It's then easy to for the viewer to leap to the conclusion that these are happening everywhere and there is a "problem." That's why it's important to look at the factual statistical data and specifically the rate of these events. The rate would be the number of explosion events as a percentage of the total number of housing units. For example - the # of explosion events per 1000 housing units.
