This fire was in Rogue River Oregon, right across the street from my Mom's house. I drove up on it when going to visit her right as it started. the tent trailer out front was on fire first then the propane tank vented a fireball into the garage. Has to be the worst and scariest sound I have ever heard. Everyone made it out of the house, but it was a total loss. Be safe out there.
Listen... Getting tired of all the hate about videoing instead of calling 911. My Mom was on the phone with them right next to me so I didn't feel it necessary. Yes I shot the video, I wanted to document it in case it jumped to my Moms house, and maybe help the investigation. In a stressful situation what would you do? Yeah it's easy to say you would do this, you would do that... You weren't there. It was the most horrific thing I have ever witnessed. Before you scream why aren't you helping?? Well as I said in my comments below, I ran to the house to check if anyone was inside... It was too friggin hot to do much of anything. I am not a firefighter... After I turned around the friggin propane tank went and thats when I started recording. So please keep your negative comments to yourself. Thank you.

First of all, I would like to give thanks for all of the positive comments and support. This is my fire department and I was on this engine. It is sad that some people have to be negative during tragic events. I would like to clarify some details that most people are not aware of when watching this video. People comment how it took so long for us to get there and only one engine, why we were not moving faster, must be a volunteer agency etc etc. We are a combination career/volunteer department that has 77 square miles of fire district to protect. We also are the ambulance service and have 200 square miles to serve. We only have 1 station to respond out of and our tax base is mostly retired citizens with a very low tax rate. We run on average about 8 calls per day and each transport is 1 1/2-2 hours long. When we are not running calls, we have a million other projects that we never are caught up on. My crew works 48 hrs on/ 96 hrs off and only gets about 4 hours of sleep....every single night, for the last 4 years now. If we are at full staffing with nobody taking the day off, we have 4 people on duty. Now onto the facts about this fire. It took us less than 2 minutes to drop our projects, get down 2 flights of stairs, get in turnouts and start driving. Then it only took 3 minutes to get on scene because this house was in the city and not way out in the county. This video started while his mom was calling 911. 5 minutes is a good response time for a small city/rural department. This is not L.A City that has 100 fire stations. People comment on performance, well there is a lot more going on inside our heads than just hooking up a hose. For starters, the fire hydrant was blocked from view by a trash can being placed in front of it. We all new approximately where it should have been, but we had to estimate which hydrant was closer so that we don't have to pull unneccessary hose and waste time. As some people correctly pointed out, the house was a lost cause. But we had an entire housing sub-division that we needed to save. Not seen on the video is the 1/2 acre grass fire behind the house that was wind driven in 90 degree summer heat. If we lost that fire, if would have raced across the 20 acre field straight towards another 40 home community. We had to establish a water supply from the hydrant first in order to maintain our pump with water. Our guys were litterally in that 10' space to the left and right sides of the burning house trying to save the next door houses (which the siding was already on fire) all while vehicles and propane bottles and ammunition was exploding around us. We also had to evacuate residents inside those houses because they were unaware that their house was on fire. We immediately asked for multiple alarms to get mutual aid, but all of our mutual aid departments are 10-15 minutes away. We are a isolated small community that is on our own for a while. I am proud to work at this department and everybody worked to the point of sheer exhaustion and almost passing out. The 2 homes next to the fire are still standing and the grass fire was stopped. This was an extemely tough fire that had been burning a while before anyone called 911, and yet we had the best outcome possible. No further homes lost and no lives lost. I would love to have 15 people on duty at all times and roll out the door with 4 engines out of 3 stations, but nobody wants their taxes to go up astronomically, people have bills to pay. People no longer volunteer as firefighters like they used to. When I started volunteering 29 years ago we had 50 volunteer firefighters, now we have only 1. I am proud to be a firefighter (career) and proud of the few remaining volunteer firefighters that this country has left. We will continue to serve in every way possible to protect the public, but we have a staffing crisis. Because we don't have the staff to back fill, we show up to work sick, we have back sprains from a long career, people with sprained ankles, broken bones, people that have torn ligaments that need surgery...and we show up to work anyway because no one else will. Thank you again for all the support from caring people, it means alot to us. You are the reason that we keep pushing through difficult shifts, working holidays and missing our families. If you are unhappy with the level of service that is provided in your community, then please donate lots of money or better yet, become a volunteer and help us make a difference.

No need to defend anything as the clowns critisizing here have never worked a fire in their life... especially the ones who throw out the fake pedigree "I'm a retired Chief Battalion Commando Capitan with 167 years of experience and fight all fires by myself bare chested and ripped abs glistening in the flashing lights". Seriously, ignore them As an actual career firefighter now retired from a metro of ~1mil I would say you guys performed spot on 👍 The primary was clearly a loss upon arrival, use your resources to save the exposure and prevent spread... I shouldn’t be commenting since I have zero firefighting experience. I honestly don’t think you guys did anything wrong. I’ve seen some of the videos out there and thought to myself Are they there to fight the fire or is this a reunion with a fire in the background I keep my opinions to myself for many reasons I can only see what is in the video so I have no idea if there’s firefighters in the building or on another side of the building or what dangers there might be causing them to have to wait I can’t judge because I’m totally ignorant about firefighting and I don’t know everything that’s going on It shouldn’t matter what I say but I think you guys did just fine from what I saw in the short video

Scott//// Also consider getting small foam extinguishers such as "Tundra". They are much better at putting out incipient fires. Dry powder does not cool, and will make the biggest mess you ever tried to clean up. Many years ago, I was on The Dalles fire department. We had 40 volunteers and mutual aid that was excellent. Did any further help show up at this fire?

Please please listen. Valuable lesson to learn here. If you’re ever in a situation where your home/building you’re in if you can do so safely close doors on your way out of the building. This closes off oxygen to the fire and can actually help to keep the fire very small. Has been shown to actually save more of the structure and help responders put out the flame faster. Really sad to see this happen but really glad everyone is safe.
@jaheim24k

@hesatwitchyone
@hesatwitchyone 2 года назад
That's his point, and a good one. Fire won't spread as fast if the door is closed...when you exit the house, close the door if its safe to. Then the fire department can open it when nessseaary and they have water to the door already or are close.

@coledavey3999
@coledavey3999 2 года назад
@FireCrew 57 And as a firefighter myself I can say it is true, flow path increases oxygen to the source of the fire. Take away or reduce flow paths and you start to narrow one side of the fire tetrahedron making it difficult for the fire to continue combustion or spread. I don’t know what they taught you in the academy but oxygen is needed for fire to grow and spread. Decrease or remove oxygen from the equation and it no longer can burn.

As a former fire Captian and training officer I felt I need to comment. The fire service accross the country is strained with shortages of personnel right now. We were back when I was in the service. That being said efficiency could have been better and a quicker fire attack could have been made. We trained to let one FF out at the hydrant who pulled a 2.5 line the engine would roll to the fire, FF would take the hydrant/make connection and charge it when pump operator was ready. Captian and other 1 to 2 FF's would pull a preconnect Crosslay right after exiting the engine. Pump operator would make 2.5 connection from supply bed to pump and signal for water. Attack FF's don't have to wait for hydrant connection and can start protecting the exposure houses with tank water. Supply water is one to two minutes away via hydrant. This is all with a crew of 3 to 4 FF's. Not bashing these guys, they saved the other structures from the looks of it. They are fellow fire fighters and just them putting their lives on the line is commendable. We learn from experience and debrief after fires to critique what went well and what didn't so we can do better next time. We trained on fire attack at drills regularly and could make these attacks in approximately 3 minutes or less from the approach to the home.

Those were the days my friend... I've been in since 1986 ..I'm 56.. Possibly my last year... Different ball game these days it's all about Health & Safety....You get a 2 or 3 pump property fire the time Station officer turns up x2.. Then DART ... Checking everyone is doing thier job properly watching in the background...Then everyone standing around waiting for someone to make a decision ... Probably made by some kid or probably carried out a table top version... But got a fire engineering degree... Lol ... Afraid to commit BAs Waiting for the Risk assessment to be perfect..... Na take me take to the days like your talking about ... Might not have been so Health & safety minded like it is today but you got results. Don't see so many house fires like there was especially where I live .. Different to properly in the States .. They look mainly wooden construction over with you .. All the newer houses over here are built from non combustible materials.. Not so many smokers.. Smoking in bed and falling asleep ... Nobody uses chip/Fry's pans ... Left unattended pissed on a Saturday night .. Mostly RTC we see because we cover the Motorway.. Different is years ago smash the car doing 60mph probably fatality... Smash the modern cars at 70mph just walk out ...Which is more of a positive thing .. Worse thing about the old days is the shit we use to breath in ... Toxic smoke (plastics) .. All sorts of dangerous stuff ..... Grass fires on the mountain... Breathing that in ..... I will miss the comradely and the fun side of the old days ... Family get involved in things on station.... Nothing like that anymore ... Just a job ... O yea ... Fire service UK .. Terminology but different.lol

So many rules and regulations and now even environmental concerns before you can even start..... and the politics 🙄. Before I left you had to have 2 ff's to go in, 2 outside as backup and 2 more for the RIT team. Plus an IC an ISO plus at least one pump operator and a rehab person. 10 plus people to do it by standards/OSHA. With short staffing we'd be lucky to have 5 on scene. Good to hear how things are done in the UK and your perspective. Happy Retirement when you do leave!

Info for you... Rogue River Fire is Jackson County Fire District 1. They have 12 paid firefighters, 4 per shift, a Captain and 3 firefighters, zero volunteers. They usually operate with only 3 per shift to accommodate time off. 50% of their personnel left 2019-2020 because of low pay and required Advanced Life Support ambulance work on 3 ambulances. The District covers 77 Sq miles and includes residential, rural and wildland firefighting. No increase in personnel has been approved by taxpayers since 2014. They have 2 type 1 engines and 1 type 3 but only enough personnel to man one at a time. They also have a brush truck and 2 water tenders. Budget increases go to maintenance of the 28 year old firehouse and the equipment/engines, some of which are 20 years old. In addition to a population increase in recent years, the area is a popular recreation spot in which they cover 7 miles of the Rogue River. So, all you commenters bash away at the fire department instead of the taxpayers who have abused this fire department and its personnel for years. And, no, I have no stake in this, just a simple search told me what the problem is here.

True People don't realize lots of aspects of fire service, for instance... About 80% of FD's are all volunteer And that about 30% of the population is covered by volunteer FD's With a nation this massive it's impossible to cover everything in a timely manner I was a full-time firefighter for three decades and finally retired just a few years ago out of a large ~1,000,000 population metro. About a decade ago we bought a mountain ranch property in an area where FD response can be an hour our more. As a result everyone out here has fire contingency plans to defend our own property. Many of us up here have skid-mounts to give us a chance knock down a fire before it gets too big, we also network to help each other out. Most at least have a modest portable where they can draft out of a water source in an emergency.

Sorry for the loss of the house. These firefighters deserve great praise. They responded wisely to this fire. With a single engine they made the right call to protect the other homes from the fire and prevent it from spreading. They worked fast and smart and as a team. To have 4 crew and be able to stretch 3 hand lines and a supply line in the time they did with a crew member going straight to protecting the brovo side exposure using the tank was great. The rest of the crew worked hard to get additional lines pulled and a supply line. These firefighters did an amazing job at hustling and not slow walking their response. Great job!

I was on 2 different volunteer fire departments we wore pagers as the cell phones were not an option in the 80's. We get the call and it is off to the firehouse so it does take time to get it all going. I was at home one time and a fire started right across the street in an add-on the firetruck was like 1/8 of a mile from this. Once we got it going I stood like 20 feet from a 500 gal propane tank that was venting about a 20 t0 30 foot flame I got to cool it down and the others got the room took care of. We were all volunteers I still think back on the tank this happened if it had gone up half the house around this one would have been taken out. Thanks to all the VOLUNTEER FIRE fighters in this country.

As a retired career firefighter, once got a call to a printing company directly located behind our department on another street. Had we walked out the back door we would had seen it. The flames were 50 ft into the air. But since no one at the department saw it, we had to get paged out, which meant it first had to be called in to station one and they dispatch us out. Response time was 3 and a half minutes upon call coming in. When we pulled on scene (I was driver operater), I heard someone in crowd ask why it took them so long. Ironically I worked at this place prior to getting on at the fire department. Fire was quickly extinguished, with minor damage to stock room.

@@NealB123 yea, because they are using their own resources, and have to leave their jobs to respond. Plus putting their own lives at risk. Many people don't yield to emergency response vehicles, especially someone in their own personal vehicle trying to rush to get to a volunteer fire department so they can respond to perhaps your neighbor or even your own house, we never know. Once at our city department, one of our firefighters was working 'the desk' answering 911 calls. The alarm company started out like always asking the dispatcher for his badge number etc., before giving address. When the alarm company did give address, firefighter, rung the responding station, giving address when it dawned on him, IT WAS HIS HOUSE! that was on fire! We never know, so always yield to all vehicles with lights, and emergency vehicles.

Looks like they did things right, this was time to establish a water supply and deploy the 2 1/2 inch line. Looks like there is a hose issue at the driveway, vertical fanning stream. Biggest issue was the air movement to the left, the "bravo side" of the involved structure, and the proximity to the next house on the left. Some may scream "deck gun", but getting a handline onto the exposure, right next to the main body of fire, was paramount. There were four firefighters on the apparatus, so once water is established, manning the deck gun was a possibility. Handy appliance, but I can tell you from experience, the deck gun requires training. It flows A LOT of water, and especially if you are running "tank to pump", you have mere minutes of supply. Getting a handline between the fire and the exposure was the primary objective here. By the way, that whining sound you hear is the emergency vent on a propane tank. It's designed to do this, to keep the pressure in check on a tank. In a firefight, you have to throw some water on that tank to keep it cool...if you can. I was watching the evolution, and the color of the smoke. Plenty of fuel right there, and an aggressive fire indeed. The home was a loss, done deal. The objective was to reduce the volume of fire at the exposure. Shame the video stops short of the results. With my crew, former captain, I had them play with the equipment. Very important. My guys knew how to properly deploy a master stream, and use the deck gun if needed. But, we had the luxury of being able to do so. Our primary mission was jumping from helicopters, but in structures, my crew was dispatched automatically on the second alarm. Thus, I had to qualify them on structural response as well as wildland, both for truck and engine duties.

What I saw from experience is a very slow deployment of their 1.5 live line, they didn't complete the pull off the truck for minutes, then charge it and cover the house to the left. Then an even slower move to get the 2.5 to the hydrant. Took a line to the back that burst. Looked like a poorly trained volunteer response to me. I worked for a volunteer station, first two or three at least got the truck to the scene, a couple more would arrive straight there, we'd pull the live line and get water on it in less than 30 seconds, we'd go straight to the hydrant immediately because like you said, we had about 3-4 minutes of a 1.5 worth of water on the truck. To me this looked like a Keystone FD.

The deck Gun using tank water would have knocked this down in around 40 seconds after they stopped. they did Not lay In a hydrant line, they didn't it manually long afterwards. That was not a clever "Fanning System, if was a punctured hose due to lack of maintenance. The Deck Gun could have wet down everything before they could untangle a hand line and get fully dressed. The Deck Gun should be the number one tool for Visible Burning material with a Booster line OR correct length 1-3/4" line should be second. USA departments don't know what Correct length means or how to store it and pull it out so if doesn't tangle. That takes the ability to Think which pretty much doesn't exist here either. It does require practice and a spotter which nobody bothers to use. Water on the burning material is Always the objective at every fire. No threat means no need for protection or quick rescue. Makes it safer for the victims and the heroes searching for them. You got the propane one right. The home was Not a loss and firefighters don't get to allow that kind of thinking into their minds. They are there to stop the threat and help victims, in that order is best.

Always call 911 ASAP. Then get out while you can. These modern fires take off a lot faster then they did 30 years ago.

I don't understand some of these comments about the firefighters. They show up at 5:07 and have water on the fire at 8:07. Three minutes is not bad considering there is one crew and one engine. People think they should have used the deck gun. What for? The main house is a total loss and they are going to do an interior attack on the house to the left. If they were defensive, a deck gun might be efficient. Then people said they were going too slow. Again, there is one engine and one crew of four, one of which is an engineer. If one of them gets hurt, it would be a massive blow to them. In WA state, there has to be at least four firefighters before they can go interior. Having one guy get hurt because he was running around, being reckless would be the worst thing that could happen and suddenly you're a crew of three. The tactic here is to let the main house burn and control the fire from growing and protecting exposures. The thing is, if they are interior on the house on the left, they will need all the manpower they can get. One guy won't work. Two guys could work and three guys is better than two, but if they're doing an interior attack, who is going to put water on the main house? There is a lot more to fighting fires than pointing a charged line at the fire and spraying it. These guys didn't do nearly as bad as people think. I'm guessing this is a rural area with limited resources and it wouldn't surprise me if these guys were a volunteer company. Where I live a fire this size would be have two engines, one ladder, one rescue/ambulance, and one commander. I'm sure the first due officer would call for a second alarm bringing more engines/trucks and equipment. I could see 6 or 7 apparatuses (engines) with a crew of about 24 which would allow for venting and several firefighters inside the second house pulling ceiling and sheetrock to get access to the fire in the extension or attic. The worst thing is, they only had one engine respond. I feel very bad for those poor kids. I couldn't imagine watching your house burn and still having family and a pet inside. I'm not sure if they lived in the house to the left, but they said something about living next door. Then when their dad and the dog came out, I'm guessing they were in the burning home to the left. Either way, I'm glad everyone is okay

I both agree and disagree, I personally would have used the deck gun to protect the neighboring house down wind (which the FAO can do) then had the captain do a walk around and had one of the other two hook up a hydrant and the last one pull a cross lay. I wouldn’t have waited 3 minutes to get water pumping. They’ve got two minutes of water in that truck, don’t wait for the hydrant hook up.
@Cthippo1
@Cthippo1 2 года назад
I think they were actually faster than that. They had a charged line in about 90 seconds, but I think they were working the exposure first, which is completely appropriate, but not visible from where the uploader was. They quickly established a water supply and basically did good work for a single company.
@ericweiler6571
@ericweiler6571 2 года назад
@@garygeorge9648 Hi Gary. I'm not sure what you mean by "fast is slow, slow is fast", but a firefighter running around like their head is on fire is never a good idea for a firefighter, especially when there are only 4. If even one ffr gets hurt, they would be only a crew of 3. In some states you can't do an interior attack unless you have 4 ffrs on scene. This is not a race. The first house is a complete loss. There is no need to rush to put that house out. They need to protect exposures and while time is one thing they don't have, rushing isn't doing anyone any favours either. Not only could they get injured, but people tend to make mistakes when they focus on speed as opposed to their training.
@ericweiler6571
@ericweiler6571 2 года назад
@@Cthippo1 I agree. I didn't know they had a charged line in 90 seconds, but that's incredible with one engine and one crew. It can take 90 seconds sometimes to prime the line (I'm not sure if I'm saying that correctly). I've been told they have to get the line ready first. What is involved in that, I don't know. There is a video of an engine in Camas, Washington where they pulled in and had water on the fire in less than 35 seconds. It's incredible and what's more is, they too were one engine and a crew of four.

Tough situation for Rogue River. First off , it is summer time, what would it take to get additional resources put on standby during this time so you could have a better response than with one engine. Not to mention there appear to be no hydrants around so it would make sense to have a water tender available.. With the increase of people moving into the Rogue Valley, the powers to be might have to do some new arrangement as far as fire protection goes. No easy answer for this, but being extra diligent in such a highly fire prone area would be paramount with people that live there. Also Rogue River is all volunteer. KUDOS TO THEM.

Looks like a rural town which means fire response is limited. I live in the suburbs of a major city and most are volunteer firefighters but the equipment my area has looks better and more modern then many of the paid city departments and fires like this the local towns respond fairly quickly with a huge mutual aid which includes standby (backfill) at towns firehouses that are working at the fire. You have to really admire volunteer fireman who drop what they are doing to put your fires out for free. I always prepare for the worst. I have fire extinguishers all over the house and one in each vehicle i have. You can never be over prepared.

For a first in engine with limited manpower they did an amazing job. Got several lines out and hit a hydrant in a quick, efficient manner. Sad that the home was a total loss but it looked like they may have been able to limit the exposure on the Bravo side.

@Jim E sides of a structure in the fire service are identified by Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, delta. Alpha being where the front door is Charlie being the rear Bravo and delta being the sides, Generally speaking

I'm a firm believer that's this day in age with the population in smaller cities increasing there should be no such thing as a volunteer fire department. These men and women should be paid and staffed to respond to the needs on the areas they serve. The government spends and allocates so much money to "miscellaneous" causes this should be on of the main pushes to prevent situations like this from happening. A small city or town should receive the same quality fire and ems as a big city!!

Biggest military budget in the world yet only one fire truck can turn up. Pissing on the fire would have done a better job.

Of course you did the right thing! Even the Fire Chief in Ohio always faces his truck towards the fire for the same reason of investigations & training! So people should never criticize anyone for doing that! Great coverage.

They are protecting the exposures since the house is total loss. Lack of resources because nobody wants their taxes to go up and rely on a handful of volunteers. The saying goes you get what you pay for and this case it’s free service so…. Also you have rely on mutual aide departments from father way for more equipment and manpower. My house is four houses down from the volunteer fire house and it will be a total loss before the first truck arrives with 2 people on it lol. Hope they were able to save the exposure dwelling from to much damage.

@@jimmccabe801 yup I use to work 60-72hrs as paramedic and now I’m a stay at home dad and only work 20-30hrs a paramedic. Maybe if I had a better schedule and better pay then I could but wait there is more. Now you have to take Firefighter 1 and 2 classes, yearly osha training and sexual harassment training. Weekly meeting at the firehouse and then don’t even get me started in my white helmet is bigger then yours politics in these “club” like volunteer fire houses. The day of the volunteer is coming to an end with both family members having to work a full time jobs and with said requirements it’s pretty much impossible to volunteer. Our area also getting filled with people moving from NYC who also won’t volunteer. I remember reading an article not to long ago about a guy who wanted to volunteer but then saw the listed stuff I just posted on this post and he was like are you crazy no one has time for that. Our culture and society doesn’t allow for many volunteers from the community. I mean I’m paying 12k a year in taxes and don’t have a paid ambulance or FD in my town but that’s a whole different story with school administrators getting paint a quarter to half million dollar contracts lol. So my home burns down and my insurance covers all of it. We probably just take the money and pay off the mortgage, sell the property and move south!
