An excellent and practical folding board from the House of Staunton - the Folding Walnut and Maple Wooden Chess Board, great choice for an inexpensive board on the go. Be sure to watch the video to the end as I also show the House of Staunton Deluxe Tournament Bag.
As always, being that I am new to filming and RU-vid altogether, I am taking the time to improve so I appreciate everyone's support and encouraging comments. Hope you all find this video useful. Be sure to stick around for the next video where I will be reviewing another excellent tournament chess set. Thank you!
My dear chess friends! Although it's been in the works for a few months now, I am excited to share with you that I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join several chess affiliate programs starting 12/8/21. As a chess youtube creator, some of the chess distributors are starting to see me as a valuable component in helping grow our chess community. Although there are not many chess affiliate programs offered at this time, I have joined so far House of Staunton, Wholesale Chess and USChess sales. Being an affiliate member does not mean I work for the company or that I am being sponsored by them; what it means is that the links which I post to chess merchandise from those companies will be affiliated and if you click into those links and decide to make a purchase there, a very small fraction of the proceeds may end up going to help support this channel and allow it to grow, for which I am thankful to you all for your wondeful support. Many people suggested I create a donation link, which I am still not entirely sure about. With affiliate links, if you wish to help support this channel, you have the opportunity to make your contribution this way. Once again, thank you everyone for your support. I will edit the previous videos to include affiliate link so be sure to check them out. Thanks again, have a blessed day!

Oh, you got the folding board! Very nice to see. This is one of the most in-depth reviews of that bag and I think you're the first one to review that board! Hopefully many people will find your channel. Thank you for demystifying all these products; there are lots of different things to see and, you are right, often we only have pictures that do not accurately represent them.

Thank you for the review. I have the board, bag and House of Staunton tournament wooden chess pieces. Purchased as a combo for under $200 USD. I believe $179. The bag is very well made and the pieces are safe and secure in the compartments. Same with the board. The Velcro tabs is a nice idea but I don’t think it is necessary in practical terms. The board doesn’t move when it is zipped up. There is room for a clock between the pieces pouches. Has a Velcro strap for it. The board is very nice quality for the price. I did get the coordinates and logo. I actually like the logo. Just me….

For your Elm Burl board you could always get a bag for it. I have one for a large board with 2.5" squares and it has a handle on it. I want to buy that exact board you show but unfortunately they are out of stock. I am loving your channel, it's fun to watch videos from other collectors. Keep them coming..

Thanks a lot for the positive comment! I saw the larger bags you spoke off and they are not super expensive either. I might consider it, although now that I have the folding board, I am more likely to take that with me somewhere, less likely to get damaged.

I waited and waited and waited for years to get this board, never making up my mind because I really wasn't playing tournaments anymore. And now is out of stock everywhere, probably thanks to "Queen's Gambit." So good to see an in-depth review of the board and the bag. Thanks for all the info. I hope someday I'll get it.

Just purchased this & bought extra corduroy drawstring house of staunton bags separately to protect the pieces a bit more. Using it with HoS Collector Series in plastic with a 4" king, and even though they seem like sturdy pieces, i feel more comfortable with that extra layer of protection. I wouldn't use it for a nice wood set on a frequent basis though. I'll update this comment after we receive the bag & board & pieces if anything is different after seeing it! Thank you for this in depth review! You've been instrumental in guiding my first serious chess purchases. Started researching for a present for my son, and two months later I have become completely obsessed lol

I throw my budget friendly wooden pieces in pouches like your bag has. Have no issues with scratches or dings. As long as there is enough padding in the bag. This shouldn't be an issue. If you are still a bit uneasy with it. Use a Plano Stowaway tackle container. I have 2 of them and they work perfectly fine.

So, I bought the HoS deluxe bag and the folding board you reviewed here in the video. I've used them at the Chicago Open tournament this weekend. Both are fantastic! I've gotten compliments on both. As for the pieces compartments, I bought two cloth bags, one for each color of pieces. Then, I put them in the zip-up compartment. Works great! No issues with scratching at all, even with my $200 wooden pieces (British Company set, also from HoS.) All told, the bag & folding board have been superb for my tournament play.

Hello from Chicagoland. Thank you for this informative video. During a recent, lengthy hospital stay I rekindled my love for chess. I’m saving up for my “ultimate “ setup and in the meantime looking at inexpensive plastic quad weight sets to hone my skills. Your other “blue bag” vid with the plastic tourney set was very helpful. Yes scratching I've noticed is more prevalent with heavier, generally higher end pieces. Also it the pieces are coated or lacquered, scratching might show more easily!

@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 года назад
@@ragnorak56 The Cambridge fits really well but the Paulsen Series Pieces fit ideally on a 2.5 inch squares. Some of the higher end luxury chess pieces with a king diameter of 1.9 inch or 2.1 would probably need a 2.5 instead of 2.25 but then again a lot of times the king base diameter might be large while the other pieces are not, so it's not always straight forward.

@SUPER_SPECTRE
@SUPER_SPECTRE 3 года назад
@@AlSuChess I also prefer large boards, especially for the quadruple weight pieces like the ones I saw you reviewed, I think that these pieces having a base of 1.85 inches need at least 2.5 inches squares. I have two sets of those pieces in white and natural plus black, and to play with them I had a 2.7-inch square board made. I don't like the pieces being too crowded. Thank you, very helpful video! I watched your video on chess pieces too and I have learned a lot of new things. I want to buy my first chess set. Can I ask you something? The pieces I like are made out of natural boxwood and golden rosewood. Is there any tool or guide to find out what wood (for the board) looks good with it? That is a very attractive set for sure, I think it's currently sold out but I am sure they will have it back in stock at some point. As far as Morphy Sets go, I had for a while, been eyeing, on the clearance section of HOS, the 4.4 Morphy Luxury Set with the blood rosewood - Natural Boxwood variation, that looks really nice, maybe one day I'll get it. I think if I start selling some of my sets off, I could get it. Otherwise, there is a nice set out there for $1.4k on HOS, the Genuine Staunton Collection - Original 1849 Vintage Luxury Pieces with Antiqued Boxwood, would probably end up being my ultimate set if I could ever obtain it.

Hey, I found your video informative. I am shopping for a folding chess board, but they are currently out of stock. I would need a carry bag that could also carry a North America DGT chess clock. Although I may use both wood and plastic pieces depending on the type of people at the event, whether it is a chess club or tournament, I would prefer to match the wood board with wood pieces and plastic pieces with vinyl board. One concern I have with the folding wooden chess board is where the top center edges meet there may be a slight gap or bump in the surface as the piece slides over the edges. Have you played on the folding chess board? How does it feel to you when you slide the pieces over the center edges? Also, would the NA DGT clock fit in one of the pouches without any problem? Finally, have you considered industrial strength velcro pieces being attached inside to secure the top of board bag? They sell it at Walmart and I imagine would go well with your bag and make a nice addition to it.

I would use heavy club pieces. I would not spend the money on wood pieces to risk damaging them or having someone drop one. For home use then a wood set.

Amazing review, I am about to buy similar combo with them, so this review provide me with good information. So how much is total weight of bag and folding board? After some time of using them are still in good condition? I think maybe the gap at the center of the board looks very big.... but in some way is ok
@AlSuChess
@AlSuChess 3 года назад
Thanks a lot for the comment! I find that the bag itself is not very heavy and the majority of the weight will come from the board, pieces and a clock, notepad that sort of thing, but ultimately, even with everything there I don't think the bag would be all that heavy. I think that this is a great combo for on the go, and the gap in the center isn't that noticeable when the board is flattened out while playing.
