Idk why you guys are praising her for, she killed innocent civilians and left the ones that are responsible for the war making even more innocents to die in the upcoming conflict
Alicent's only mistake was telling Rhaenys "you are the queen who should've been" not knowing that her words will spark encouragement in Rhaenys to support Rhaenyra, the queen who is being supplanted just like she had been in the past.
@@Ready-ForTheEnd that's literally all it has come down to. Rhaenys telling Alicent that all she's done is serve men (her husband, her father and her son) but has she never imagined herself on the iron throne. The story relies heavily on the gender struggles of being a woman. Despite being the rightful heir, Rhaenyra's claim is being put into question based on her lady parts by half the realm. Rhaenyra's succession was being challenged because of her lost "purity" which would not be the case at all had she been born with a cock (see: Aegon II). I disagree with your statement. They are the same character writ twice.
@@Ready-ForTheEnd Your comment misses the glaringly obvious, rheanyra doesn’t need to be exactly like her, infact that may be a good thing in her eyes, look how it turned out . Rheanys did everything ‘right’ and look how her life ended up. She’s a matriarch, she’s lost her children and now all she has left are granddaughters . Supporting rheanyra either secures corlys bloodline or verifies that rheanys was right in abdicating all those years ago. Either way it goes, it serves her story. Also the whole planet bent the knee for dany and 3 adolescent dragons despite all those years of mad Targaryen rule. A female with decent PR and a fleet of dragons could easily rule, no force or army could stop them. The maesters finessed it and the lords helped them secure an easier manipulated monarch.

she can't kill them in their own castle without declaring to rhaenyra first or she would be called a kinslayer and a kingslayer. she doesn't want to dishonor herself and her house. she could've exited better but it was definitely the right move not to kill them. unsatisfying for sure but it would have made rulers dislike rhaenyra even more because killing the king and queen regent in their own house is dishonorable.
Showrunners really don't get how crowds work do they? Absolutely no way a dozen guards would be able to close those doors with hundreds of people pushing from the other side to get out, especially since they open OUTWARD.
This scene was so fucking stupid. Rhaenys could’ve ended the war before it even began right there. And she wouldn’t kill the Greens cause that’s wrong but she casually kills hundreds of small-folk with her dragon?
@@sereeyengsakulpaisal3756 No, the mad queens in GoT universe kill hundreds and thousands of innocent people and children while accomplishing nothing. I'm team green but even I wanted her to kill all of greens then and there instead of ensuring further bloodshed and fall of the dynasty. How utterly stupid writing for such a great character.
@@DavidoMAMO And then she chose to spare all the people who actually pose a problem for her side. Great job Rhaenys. Hundreds of innocents dead for literally nothing

I love how earlier in the episode, Alicent told Rhaenys to ring the bell when she was ready to give an answer. And now the bells ring as Rhaenys shows everyone what her answer is.
@@MCB741 Blame the greenish queen who took the words of a delirious dying man seriously. She should have discuss things with Raenyrah first and explain what her father said... if she truly wanted to avoid bloodshed.
This scene was my biggest gripe with season one: as cool and epic as it was, it made absolutely no sense whatsoever and was probably only added in for the “wow” factor. I really hope they don’t repeat that in the coming seasons, because the show is amazing. Feels like Game of Thrones when the show was at its prime.

@@007dalal That’s the whole point of Targaryens. They are humans but they are humans who have power because of their dragons, thus the name: House of the Dragon
Aegon would suffer the most because of this. He didnt want to but it was forced to him. Wait till you see him get mangled up by dragon fire and broken bones.
Everyone here thinks this is awesome, but if you existed in this world you wouldn't be a girl boss Targaryen with a cool dragon, you would be one of the smallfolk getting randomly murdered by her for no reason. Robert had the right idea trying to bring this family to extinction.
I was going to say, Rhaenys had no reason to attack innocent civilians like that. It's stuff like this where you begin to understand why Robert's Rebellion happened in the first place.
im starting to think he was perhaps planning on killing her since those twin brothers were working for otto. but she got lost among the crowd before he could do anything to her
Focus solely on her character. Her expressions were truly amazing. Throughout the ceremony, she stood with a sense of fear, whispering to herself. She flawlessly executed her role in this scene. yes "There is a beast beneath the board."
Watching people defend this poorly written scene is like those days when people were praising GOT seasons 5-6; the simpletons ate that garbage up at the time but anyone with critical thinking capacity could tell they were being served bad writing. Of course, the normies didn’t realise it till Season 8 lmao 🙄
That's some Iron Man armour cause she didn't just go to the dragon pit on the orther side of New York and came back wearing full armour with no help or horse LMAO, it would have bee better if they showed that guard taking her to the dragon pit instead...
Nah, don't compare this with S5 and S6, S5 and S6 were much better than HOTD, watch episode 10 of S6 and you'll realize how much better got is better than Hotd.
@@rono3040 you mean the episode where Jon Snow gets insane plot armor? Or how Sansa saves everyone with Littlefingers army but she neglected to tell Jon she had their support? That episode is littered with inconsistencies and plot holes. The only redeeming aspect is finally revealing Tower of Joy twist.
Aegon II is the rightful king. I know, Viserys chose Rhaenyra, but the truth is Viserys did not have the authority to do so. Even a king does not exist above Westerosi traditions, laws and customs which state that a son inherits over the daughter. Rhaenyra is an usurper
Yes a King has authority, he has absolute power. Plenty of kings have created new traditions and removed old ones throughout Westerosi history. You’re just pulling stupid shit out of your own ass or someone fed you a lot of misinformation… However it was still dumb for Viserys to do that (make Rhaenyra his heir), he should have just had Daemon be his heir.
What annoys me to no end is that Greens do no actually defend this position like in the book. This conflict would be much more interesting if it was an ideological conflict between royal authority vs authority of the law and tradition. Instead both sides argue more or less the same "The king said I should be heir." with the green argument being much weaker of course because conveniently Alicent is the only witness to the king changing his decision. The Greens should just have said "F*ck the King, he had no right to change the succession laws. Period"
@@pg1448 Oh yeah, the greens have the superior claim, but their argument is fucking stupid. "Viserys conveniently said Aegon should be king when only I was around and then died" lmao. A much better argument from the greens would have been to point out that regardless of what Viserys says, even the dragonkings don't exist above tradition and that a king's word is not law.
@@hadokenraikiri6977 Exactly, they could have brought up multiple precedents where the oldest son was heir by default like Aegon I, Aegon the uncrowned, Jaehaerys I. Even Viserys was only king because the male line was chosen over the female line. His son Baelon was "heir for a day" as well. Alternatively they could have brought up the issue that Rhaenyras sons are illegitimate wich counts as treason, therefore even if her claim was valid she has lost any right to the throne. The Green cause stood on solid ground from a legal perspective and instead the writers chose to come up with this lame excuse ("Viserys changed his mind in his last seconds on earth") wich was not needed in the first place.
Why wouldn't she kill them? She killed a bunch of innocents so it was not about honour. She declared her allegiance in this scene against them. She is going to fight a war against them where they could kill her and those closest to her. Why would she leave them? One of the dumbest things I've ever seen.
because 'the scene is badass', as all the idiots in the comments keep saying. what is the point of relevant plots and truthful characterization in the face of useless badassery?
Guys...stop saying this scene is fine because "peasants don't matter"....there's absolutely no way that she didn't kill ANYONE important, this is the coronation of the king, and the debris from the entrance was hitting people in the balcony.... and even if she didn't, she would have no clue who she was going to annihilate when blasting out of the fucking floor dragon first....this is just character assassination....she literally has a back door to take in the dragon pit and doesn't use it because....I guess she just HAD to decimate several hundred people she couldn't even identify.
Yeah ppl rly outta respect Rhaenys. Last child of jaehaerys, lived to see her son, and daughter killed all in pursuit of legacy and power. Had she had the throne her family would be intact. And the bond between houses kept stronger. Just seeing all that potential pass by, leading up to her pretty much saying "i dont think so" is so good. When she got lost I was like "Great another Arya stark adventure" then she gazed into the depths of the dragon pit and I was like "OH FUK" such a good episode. The build up, and the fight between who got to the heir first, that heir not wanting it and being a hungover mess, and despite us hating Aemond and Christian, they technically held the will of the queen, which was to get to the heir before her father could. Making her decision to assert aegon, imo, that much more believable, but also I was kinda rooting for her. Yeah Cole killed that one dude and supports the queen, I dont like him either, but still his rage commands authority and the queen controls him. As dangerous as he could be to rhaenyra, he could be very useful. All things considered I feel as the actions of Alicent are believable due to her position, they rly show her not going mad, but genuinely struggling to keep a balance of peace rather than pursue her fathers wishes. And its kinda funny how the protection of the family, what viserys wanted, is what alicent guns for in this episode. Her authority in this episode actually kinda gave me hope
@@sunnyboyjr2611 Rhaenys has no one to stare down to. @@ZannaZatanna1 yes, because Viserys didn't even cared about it and it was the prince's eye the one that was cut and Lucerys is just the brother of one future king. Although HOTD was a great season of GOT content, this is easily the dumbest choice the writers made. It didn’t occur in Fire & Blood and the writer’s reasoning behind this decision is very weak

I am sorry but I can't understand this. What is the reason she didn't just kill them other then bad writing? She is not cruel? She did kill a lot of people right there and still is going to wage a war against green, resulting either in them dying anyways, together with countless civilians or the loss of party she supports? Out of respect for Allicent? Again, what are you going to do next? Go to Raynera and plead for peace at this point? The way it's presented she didn't kill them not because she is merciful or respectful, but because she is a bloody moron who doesn't understand the consequences. I love the series but writers should have done something different for the scene. It is flashiness over logic like last four GoT seasons yet again.
Loved Olivia Cooke's acting here. It showed Alicent's true character. In the face of certain death, she stood in front of her son. A mother above all else.
@@shamaiahellis8810 Because in Westeros there is not what you want, only what you have to do otherwise you risk your life. Robb wanted to marry Talisa (in show, in books it made more sense but whatever) and boom, Red Wedding. Lyanna and Rhaegar wanted to run away together and it caused Robert's Rebellion. Cersei wanted to fuck Jaime and once that was discovered, her children were proclaimed illegitimate and then we had War of the Five Kings. Ofc, all 3 of these events had a lot of underlying reasons (Robb's bad decisions, rule of Mad King, Lysa wanting to climb on Petyr's Littlefinger) but these scenarios only worsened the whole thing that could have been much more easily avoided and maybe even completely prevented. There is a reason why in Westeros duty in noble houses is such a big thing. Rhaenyra : a dragonrider, pretending to be the rightful queen just because it was given to her, prefering sending others to death for her own cause and unable to use Syrax. Alicent : the daughter of a second son, without any supernatural power, but protecting her son from a fire breathing monster without hesitation. And there's still some fans who believe that Rhaenyra would make a good queen...

Also tywin had the entire northern army butchered to a man whiles they were drunk, do even the saving lives argument is invalid He couldn't beat robb on the field so he had him murdered at a wedding
oh man i never noticed how alicent tells criston to go to helaena 🥺 i wish sunfyre came to aegon here so the two dragons would have a mutual destruction stalemate stand-off. to me, if we had otto saying “open the doors”, and right at when meleys is about to burn the greens, we hear sunfyre roar from behind, and squeeze in so he can protect his rider, and he opens up his beautiful golden/pink wings, it would be more meaningful, satisfying and make more sense. (also it would be cool foreshadowing for the future, and how sunfyre is able to find/connect with aegon on dragonstone after rooks rest if the mental/emotional link between them was exemplified early on.)
I have my own opinions about Alicent's character but the move she made without hesitation, shielding Aegon with her own body from Meleys, willing to take the brunt of dragon fire, showed me how much of a Mother she is. She's distant and angry most of the time but the things she's willing to do for her children. Tragic character and brilliant acting by Olivia Cooke.
Alicent may be manipulative, cunning, ambitious, and greedy for power now but at the end of the day, she does truly love her children very much and tries to protect them all. I think one of the main reasons she even wanted Aegon II on the throne is to just ensure that they are safe from Rhaenrya because she probably still fears she would kill all of them if they initially supported her claim. The more power they have, the more safer they all are. Though I get the feeling that all of her children will die because of her and something she did.
@@garlantyrell6368 But that’s the main issue with her character : it’s all imaginary beef with Rhaenyra ever since they were teens and she learned the truth about her and Ser Criston. Sure her father might have played with her mind but she was convinced (still is) for years that Rhaenyra would kill her sons (wich technically are Rhaenyra’s own brothers , children of Viserys) should she ascend to the throne.
