I was upset at what I watched and I lost some interest in this show! So I guess stupid is a recessive gene! They made Rhaenyra's stupid and short sighted! I guess the apple never falls far from the tree! Why would you have all your kids by the door man! If your husband does not want to give you any kids the you kill him and get you another husband! I knew that her marrying a gay man was going to be a major issue and using the same old wornout and overused storyline! You can't have all your kids by the doorman knowing that Alicent is plotting against you! Your father is still dumb and clueless! If his wife had kids with brown or black hair he would have had her head on a pike!!! Yeah. If you are going to tell a story don't make it something I have seen numerous times before and don't dumb down the characters especially after aging them by ten years!
Hearing vhagar whine and cry because even though she loves laena she will forever be loyal to her rider and obeys her commands, even when she doesn’t want to.
They again such an incredible job making dragons just be a thing that is part of this world. She clearly did not want to obey Laena this time. And to have a CGI dragon's face convey such pain and reluctance when she finally obeyed was incredible.
Honestly, the fact that he is still alive is just wild based on how bad they make him look before the time-skip, so I can see that mistake being a somewhat common one. Also with the way the cast switched up + introduced so much.. it can be a bit harder to follow D:
@@sarcasmxkate Oh no, for sure, but GoT has done some pretty wild things in the past to be fair. Also, is it just me, or did others think the time-skip would've come a little later down the line? I was really enjoying the previous actors/actresses, though the new folks weren't bad either! But yeah, I think it was just an oversight by BW for sure. I wasn't even thinking about it when it happened, and I was like "Wait, based on the year, he should still be alive and kicking, no?" Lol

@@Cakeyyama I just found it funny that even Eric didn't catch on. He seems to be well versed in this. I knew the newer cast was coming in by the halfway point, so I wasn't surprised. What surprises me is not recasting Criston. He looks younger than he did the last time we saw him! I know GoT has done some wild stuff, so maybe it was just my book knowledge that helped with the timeline, but I still say calling her 'Princess' was a massive clue. 🤣🤣🤣
Daemon living the most peaceful and normal life out of all of them is kinda funny but also shows the part that his character is driven by the love for his family so he had really done the best he knew and could to take care of them and protect them
Viserys should've let Daemon marry Rhaenyra. Look at her with Laenor. Alicent bullied and humiliated her to walk up there after giving birth. Bastard rumors swirled. Pushed Rhaenyra to move out of KL. Best acting moment for Emma in the episode is when Rhaenyra chewed out Laenor. You can see who controls this arrangement. All Rhaenyra was trying to tell Laenor is to be there for her. She doesn't hate him but he always seems away.
Daemon might have not been so bad as heir. He seems to have mellowed out a lot. Visyres would have lived long enough for him to mellow too. Oh well, let's have a bloody civil war instead lol.
I do like the 'greyness' to his character and not just being a cartoon villain. He really does seem to try his best, from his own pov, but it can come into mistakes. I
Well Vhagar had rider's in the past but at the point where the show started she didn't. Viserys and Laena talked about her taking off and making a nest on the coast so from episodes 1-5 of the show she was "wild".
Daemon maybe an egocentric and maniac in his days, but he'll never harm his own family, yet Larys did it without any remorse, looks like Viserys's so-called plague isn't his brother, but his wife's Littlefinger
Spoiler alert . . . . . . . . Damon will do the worst thing that anyone has done in this universe, counting game of thrones and house of the dragon, and he wont do it to someone that deserve it, nor someone that wants to take the throne but to someone trully innocent
So just to clarify, just because you're a Targaryen with Targaryen blood, it doesn't always mean you'll bond to a dragon immediately. The Valyrian custom is to leave a dragon egg inside a newborns crib in the hope that they can hatch the egg and bond with it. Some wait until much later to bond to a dragon. Laena herself wasn't a dragon rider at birth despite being a full blooded Valyrian but she bonded to Vhagar when she became older.
also he thinks that the dragon isnt completely listening to lucerys because lucerys isnt targareyen. he is as much targareyen as alicent's children. The dragon isnt completely listening because the dragon and luke are both young and havent completely bonded yet
The sad thing is, Aegon, Aemond, Lucerys, and Jacaerys were friends (well maybe not Aemond. He appears to be the "butt of the joke" friend), and their parents, more Alicent than anyone, are pitting them against each other. It makes sense from Alicent's perspective why she'd think the way she does. She exists within this power structure, and uses it the way she was taught, by enforcing it. Rhaenyra bucks against the society she lives in, and because we know that society is so wrong, many feel inclined to be more supportive of her. I personally support her, but I can see the other side and that there is pragmatic merit to it. But to actively poison your sons against their friends is deeply wrong. Daemon was fascinating this episode. He clearly has affection and respect for Laena, despite that it seems their union is more of a beneficial partnership than a great love, and also seems to be very close to Baela (named after his father, Baelon the Brave. Both Viserys and Daemon seem to have been deeply affected by his passing. He must have been a remarkable man), his older daughter. But he also seems very emotionally closed off at times, and also seems to neglect his younger daughter Rhaena. The final scene with him and Laena during her birth was so tragic. He was present for the birth of his child, unlike Viserys with Aemma and Laenor with Rhaenyra. And presented with the same decision as his brother, he doesn't make the same mistake. You can see he shakes his head. But Laena overheard them, and made the decision herself. Something tells me this is the event that truly affects Daemon, setting him on a different path. RIP to Laena, rider of Vhagar. A true Valyrian Dragon Rider.
The thing that bothers me, is that Alicent easily could have been like hey let’s make a pack we can marry our kids so no one can use us against each other especially because Alicent KNEW HER FATHERS MOTIVES, she said that when he left but she chose to omit truths just like rhaenyra and now tries to pretend she’s all innocent 😂😂😂
The way this season will be so rewatchable after the show concludes is amazing. All of the seeds of what's to come, the excitement and action people are pining for, have been laid perfectly these first 6 episodes. It remains to be seen how they conclude this season, but the execution has been masterful so far.
Calvin the kids are still Targaryen with Targaryen blood, they were as much Targaryen as Jon and the only reason Aemond doesn't have a dragon yet is that he hasn't been able to claim one - not because he isn't the heir.
I thought the change in actors would be jarring, but when I saw the older actors on screen I was instantly immersed like “yeah that’s just the actors grown up.” Extremely well done with the casting and amazing job by all of the actors!
i honestly liked this episode the most and i feel like they lost a lot of time with the other episodes, even tho it was essential for non readers and the audience in general to understand where the conflict is coming from. but that was the start of the action

@@iceman7757 That is so interesting! Where did you hear that? I think thats such a smart thing to do since most people would prefer the original actor they see for a character, i think, so making sure the cast post time jump are perfect for the role is essential.
This is actually the 4th time Rats have showed up in this show. There were rats in Balerion's skull in episode 4. There was a rat above Alicent and the Kings bed in the same episode. Then last episode we had the rat feeding on Joffrey's blood and now the rat on Viserys' fireplace.
Vhagar wasn’t wild, she born on dragonstone with the Targaryen family 20 years before Aegon the Conqueror was even born. Vhagar is the last surviving dragon of the original 3 that Aegon and his sisters rode during Aegons conquest. She is like 170 years old and said to be nearly as large as Balerion(giant skull, 200 years old when died of old age), she is the biggest and baddest dragon in the world by a significant margin. He old age just means she’s had quite a few different riders, there just wasn’t anyone around to claim her and she’s too big for the dragon pit so she kinda just roamed free until Leana was able to claim her due to her mothers Targaryen blood.
@@DanielFernandez-gv6iy no, a lucky scorpion shot(giant crossbow) went right through her eye killing her and her rider queen Rhaenys, 1 of Aegons sister wives. That happened about 100 years ago from house of the dragon. Meraxes exact age is unknown but she was bigger and older than Vhagar but younger than Balerion. Meraxes was anywhere from 60-110 when she died(Daemons dragon is about 50 years old right now for perspective), still bigger than any of the other dragons alive today except Vhagar who has lived longer than Meraxes was at the time of death.
Vhagar was said to be nearly as large as Balerion DURING THE CONQUEST, he was even more massive when he finally eventually died shortly after being ridden by Viserys.
Vhagar was the dragon of Visenya, eldest sister (and wife) of Aegon the Conqueror, some 120 years before what we see in that episode. She's the oldest, biggest dragon living, now that Balerion is dead.
Vhagar hesitating to kill laena was tragic and I loved it because it shows that dragons aren’t just mindless creatures of destruction. Also my boy aemond is gonna play a big part in the future so be careful who you bully.
Missing the point that having a child outside marriage was considered a crime back then, though. Rhaenyra basically never face the consequences of her choices because shes a privilage and protected princess... Its RIDICULOUS and insulting that they are above Viserys and Alicents children in the line of succession, thats a fact
@@marti9734 technically speaking yes, Allicents children are legally Rhaenyra’s heirs while Viserys still lives. However upon Viserys death, Rhaenyra as Queen can choose her heirs. Even if they were confirmed bastards, Rhaenyra can just legitimise them.

I don't see anyone talking about the fact that he plucks the malvales flower at the end, when last episode he compared Alicent to that same species. Writers really delivering on the metaphors.
Honestly a LOT of leaps of (a lack of) logic from the 3 non readers. Some of the things I could get, but theres a few context clues throughout precisely for show only watchers to know "oh this is that, oh that is theirs" etc. They're usually pretty good in catching them so it was a bit jarring.
@@chaotic7cam I think Vermax was just aggressive because it sensed Jace was nervous and not particularly confident at first. Like with any other animal, you have to establish firmly and without hesitation that you're the leader and they have to do what you tell them to do. If the balance of authority is even a little unclear, ESPECIALLY with a freaking dragon, then it will lash out. Dany had the same problem.
In a deleted scene Daemon comforted his daughters. (The picture of the scene was shared online). I don’t know why they cut the scene. He did love his daughters and wife in the book.
This episode made me love Daemon even more, When faced with the same choice as his brother the first thing he asks is if the mother would survive and when told no he declines. He loves and cares for his family, it was so sad to see it be cut short so quick. I also wish he had got to see how Harwins relationship developed with Rhaenyra, he was taken far too soon, I wanted way more from that duo and the kids.
The kids still have targaryen blood, regardless of whom their dad is. It's not like Cersei's situation where they were all 100% Lannisters for example, more like Gendry's with the difference Laenor actually claims them. The boys are very much Targaryens and Viserys' grandchildren, albeit only half valyrian.
Regardless it would still cause a succession problem, there’s no way this would be allowed, it’s 100% obvious the three aren’t laenor’s children and the show makes it even more obvious with the skin color. You can’t just have bastard children inherit the throne, legally and morally it’s fucked and nobody would stand for it.

Fuck! Laena's death differed from the book but I personally loved this version. It has shown the deeper connection between the riders and their dragons. Vhagar understood Laena's pain and how she wanted to perish.
In the original source material, Laena is heavily pregnant and goes into labour, just like in the series. However, unlike the TV show, she is able to give birth to a boy, who dies after just an hour. After suffering from sickness for three days, Laena also dies, having tried to go to Vhagar so she could fly her dragon one more time. Daemon then picks her up from the tower steps where she collapsed and died and carries her to her bed
Am I the only one who's feeling sad and frustrated after the death of Ser Harwin? They should have kept him at least till the end of season 1. I need more of him.😢😩

Aemond doesn't have a dragon because the egg they put in his cradle didn't hatch. Which is...kind of a bad omen for a Targaryen. (And also an easy thing to make fun of for kids.) They can bind to a dragon later, but it's not as good as when they bind to a dragon that was basically born with them.

they are not given dragons they are given dragon eggs on their birth . the youngest son of alicent aemond doesnt have a dragon because his egg didnt hatch the same thing with daemon's kid latter in the scene where the little girl tries to warm the egg in hopes to hatch but as laena velaryon said to her daughter you can claim an older dragon when you get older
You guys missed it but just for your notes, Rhaenyras' eldest, Jacaerys, his juvenile dragon that we see is named Vermax! Also I think when Aemond walks down to the dragon pit, the dragon we see I think is Dreamfyre, the same given to Prince Baelon before he died.
@@encased3427 Baelon was given it about 11 or so years ago, he died, and Dreamfyre was no longer claimed. He’s now an older juvenile dragon, and gets claimed by a character we saw this episode.
Dreamfyre is a dragon born in 34 ac she was princess rhaena King jahaerys older sister dragon it's his egg that was given to the infant baelon that died.
@@kobydark5418 I see what you’re saying. I guess the show made it sort of confusing. So when the dragon trainer said Dreamfyres egg was stolen, they meant the egg is from Dreamfyre, not that the name of the dragon IN the egg was Dreamfyre. Got it.
Vhagar, who Laena rides, was not a wild dragon, but one of the three ridden by Aegon the conquerors sisters. At this point in the story, she is the oldest dragon in Westeros. Laena bonded and was her second rider.
For the very first time in my life, I'm glad they changed a scene from what happened in the books in a TV show. Letting Laena see Vhagar one more time and choose her way of going, as a dragon rider by fire. I liked that, I liked that very much. In the book she only attempts to go to Vhagar and Daemon finds her at a bottom of the stairs and carries her back to bed. They did a beautiful thing changing that.
Literally. And I’m seeing people saying they hated it to the point they want to drop the show? Like when I read that part in the book I had to stop reading. She didn’t even get to SEE her dragon. I understand tragic irony and such but having her go out by dragon fire instead of sick in a bed was amazing. I was dreading this part but they did awesome.
@@YourBlackLocal Silly in what way? She wanted a dragon rider's death, she was told she was about to die, she didn't want to die in bed so went to get her dragon's death. It makes sense for her character, it's physically possible, it's poetic, she got to go out on her own terms in a way that was ceeeeeertainly less painful and drawn out (it took 3 days in the book). Feel like people complaining are just reaching for reasons.
Two things: 1. Vhagar is not a wild dragon - she was one of the original dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters (specifically, Visenya). Prior to Laena, it was just that she had not been claimed by a rider in quite some time. But she is still very much a Targaryen dragon. 2. Vermax is small because he is young, not because of the 50% Strong blood. Dragon size depends on if they are being constrained or not (ie the Dragonpit)
Yeah. Everyone here in comment section forgot how loyal and straightforward Lyonel Strong is. Dude even tried to resign once what his son did was confirmed to him.
Larys being a skinchanger is an old theory. The Strongs are not known to have skinchangers, but they have the blood of the first men so they could be. It would be a cool payoff if he really is and we learn that he really is in the rats. Would be a cool type of "villain". Would be a cool hint to when Bloodraven becomes the Hand of the King in his time, because he really was a skinchanger and greenseer who used ravens to spy on everyone and rule with an iron fist. I expect them to eventually keep the show going to the Blackfyre rebellion in like 70 years from where the show is now. Why else would they call the show "House of the Dragon" and not "A dance of Dragons" if they don't plan to cover the entire House of the Dragons history, cutting off the very beginning with Aegon the Conqueror because that could be a show or movie in itself.

I feel like no one really talks about it (or I just missed it), but that was the great tragedy of Harrenhal that's been talked about before in GoT a couple times, no one knows how it happened and while this is one of the theories of who it actually could've been that caused it, it's kind of big to see it happen onscreen finally and even make tv canon who's reponsible for it (out of all the suspects or alternatively just keep it a mistery or the curse of Harrenhal that caused it).
Something not mentioned in the show is that Larys is an interrogator/jail master of sorts in the books, which is why he has access to the prisoners as shown
There's a theory that Larys Strong is actually a warg and he has been warging into the rats...and that's how he knows so much. Rhaenyra receiving the moon tea, when she snuck out of the castle, and now spying on Viserys ...it's a good theory, and could very well be true ...who knows.
RIP to laena & Harwin !! Two characters that probably needed more screen time, but also understandable for why the show is on a fast pace. Seeing how they're going through 30 years of build-up in just one season. And seeing non bookers react on social media to the deaths of these two barely fleshed out characters has me really excited for the dance 💯😈
Olivia Cooke has a constant look of smelling something foul on her face, and I absolutely love it. Just how I pictured her character in Fire and Blood.
The cadence/enunciation of Larys Strong’s voiceover (near the end of the episode), is reminiscent of Voldemort’s in the Battle of Hogwarts when he recalls his army. Cold-hearted.
Easter eggs in this episode, PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED: 1. Helaena during Alicent and Aemond's conversation: "He'll have to close an eye" refering to Aemond losing an eye but bonding with Vahgar next episode. 2. Harwin when leaving Rhaenyra and the children: "Next time we meet I'll be a Stranger." Foreshadowing his death as one of the seven deities, death, is named the Stranger.
Miguel Sapochnik said that this whole episode was meant to feel like another pilot for the show and DAMN he was right! I am going to miss the old cast but the new cast is just as amazing. And this whole episode reinforces my belief that hereditary hierarchies cause 90% more harm than good to both “royal” families and the societies they are supposed to rule. Also as sad as it was I would’ve made the same choice as Laena made, not only is it a quick death but I would rather have it be said that it took a dragon incinerating me to kill me. As for Larys, he might be even worse than Littlefinger. Baelish was extremely ambitious and didn’t care who got in his way, but he still cared for Catlyn and her daughters. He even felt extreme guilt after finding out what Ramsey Bolton did to Sansa. But Larys (especially with that final speech) is a true psychopath, incapable of feeling any sense of remorse for his actions.
28:07 Larys actually being a Warg or a Greenseer is an actual theory from the books i have heard! The Strongs are descendants of the first men. It’s not that far off to think that. Props to Aaron for gathering the clues about the rats popping around the king.
The 3 Eyed Raven - Brynden Rivers (AKA: Bloodraven) is Rhaenerya's great-grandson. Her grandson Aegon IV (the Unworthy) had a bunch of bastards, and on his deathbed, he legitimised them. The 3-eyed raven was one of them. (Another was Daemon Blackfyre, who started the Blackfyre rebellions - Targaryen civil war take 2). So, Bloodraven won't be born for 45 years until after Rhaenerya dies.
I think something that a lot of people overlook is that Alicent isn’t wrong when she says it isn’t up to Aegon His existence already weakened Rhaenyra’s claim but between the rumours about her and Daemon and now her children clearly being bastards just makes them even weaker and even if Aegon was the perfect brother and fully supported Rhaenyra there would be no shortage of lords causing problems and even willing to go to war to keep her and her bastard children off the throne and use into him as a figurehead
The three-eyed raven(old guy in the tree in GoT) is Brynden Rivers(Bloodraven) the bastard son of Aegon IV( the unworthy). He has not yet been born in HotD, this show takes place from roughly 103 AC to 129 AC. Bloodraven is born in 175 AC. It's my hope his story and the Blackfyre rebellions are covered in another show or later seasons of HotD.
I just realized today that the kid playing Aegon in these couple episodes is named Ty Tennant. He is David Tennant's, 10th Doctor, stepson and also the biological grandson of Peter Davison, the 5th Doctor.
The whole "Fire can not kill a Dragon" line was aimed at her stupid brother calling himself a Dragon and saying stuff like "You don't want to wake the Dragon" instead of "You are making me angry"
Obviously the Daemon Laena scene happened first but who would of thought our 1st "real," Vaghar moment would have been so affectionate/sad? This show has been AMAZING! Just brilliant 👏
They were showing something by Daemon not being harmed by the fire. I was really expecting a Danerys moment when Laena died. I was waiting for the sound of a baby crying.
Vhagar the she-dragon was the dragon of Visenya the sister wife of Aegon the Conqueror. Vhagar is really iconic. Literal war machine who was at the uniting of Westeros under the Conquest. Vhagar will soon be the dragon of Aemond Targaryen..the youngest son of Alicent.

All Greenseers are Skinchangers, I think its mentioned in the books that one man in a thousand is born a Skinchanger and one Skinchanger in a thousand is born a Greenseer. The Three Eyed Raven was born Brynden Rivers, bastard son of Aegon IV and Melissa Blackwood, in 175AC, possibly later in show canon.
Vhagar, the one that Laena rides and gets killed by her own dragon. That dragon is 1 of the three original dragons when Aegon conquered Westeroes with Balerion. That's how old Vhagar is when this takes place. We shall see more of Vhagar in the future
That speech that Larys gave reminded me so much of Littlefingers’s “chaos is a ladder” speech from season 3 episode 12! When Joffrey killed Ros. Definitely got chills!
Fun fact! At the Small Council they were discussing Lord Grover Tully of Riverrun, ancestor of Catelyn, Edmure, and the Blackfish. It's fun and interesting to note the names of Lord Grover's grandson, Elmo Tully, and Elmo's sons, Oscar and Kermit. They are Lord George R.R. Martin's nod to Sesame Street and the Muppets.

Fun Fact: In the source material, Rhaenys has black, not silver hair. Thats why its a little more ambiguous whether the kids are Laenors or not. And the Velaryons are all white so its not as painfully obvious for everyone at court every time they look at the kids when Laenor is nearby.
I don't think it works that way. If Jon Arryn and Ned Stark were right about Baratheon seed being strong (their traits being caused by dominant alleles), then Rhaenyra's strong boys couldn't have black hair because of this when Leanor didn't inherit black Baratheon hair from his mother. Let's say Corlys had recessive valyrian alleles aa, Rhaenys had dominant Baratheon allele A and recessive valyrian allele a. Laenor had silver blonde hair, so he inherited recessive alleles from his father and mother. Because of this he wouldn't be able to pass dominant allele to his offspring.

I feel like Rhaenyra leaving King's Landing is not the smartest of choices. People will still talk bad about her and considering her father's condition some might just take the chance to sit when the throne becomes empty, while she is away. Seems like she is just running away from her problems as they pile up more and more.
shes much safer in dragonstone, and by residing in that, shes kinda fulfilling her duty as heir to remain in dragonstone, rhaenyra is right, they shouldve left as soon as she is declared as heir
On a completely unrelated subject, I just realised that Laenor is played by John MacMillan, who voiced Varl in the Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West games. Since Aaron played the first game, I thought he would recognise it too.
Ser Criston was great this episode. He baited Harwin into shaming himself and being ousted from King's Landing. And he took Harwin's punches like they were nothing.

He likes that flower that he feels is odd to be thriving in King's Landing (bees & flowers) and also bees have a stinger that hurts to get stung by! He enjoys hurting people. He seemed to enjoy those men having their tongue cut out. And doesn't care about killing off his own family. (psychopath, serial killer vibes)... ALSO!!! We see GOT master of whispers referred to as the spider (poison via fangs. Web of secrets) Varys! Well now we see Larys (V changed to L) with the stinger & hive! So yeah, a Bee! And he's working for the current Queen... Queen Bee ...
The old gods are not the reason some people can warg. It's more related to bloodlines. The three eyed raven also uses the weirwood trees, which are the old gods but Bran is also a warg.
In the books Rhaenys, Laenor's mom, has black hair so the question of the kids parentage is a bit more complicated. The reason some of kids don't have a dragon is that not all dragon eggs hatch.
@@leonrussell9607 I know but what I'm saying is even if they were black in the books it wouldn't be that wild for them to be born white passing with dark hair.
