My main issue of this episode was that when he got to the royal quarters there are literally no guards anywhere. They waltz into the most secure place in the country and straight into the queens chamber.

Cole is the worst lord commander the kingsguard has ever seen, instead of protecting the heir, he was "servicing" the Queen mother...

Everyone had a great father's day except for Aegon

What is Alex talking about them pulling back? They aren't going to show a child getting his head sawed off. The sound effect was more than enough

Correction: In the book Aegon and Helaena have two sons: Jaehaerys and Maelor. In the book Blood & Cheese make Haelena choose which son to be killed, not to choose between Jaehaerys and his twin sister Jaehaera. Helaena chooses Maelor because he's younger and not the heir but Blood and Cheese kill Jaehaerys.

Actually they were both boys, in the book she pointed at the youngest one. They instead went for the older child, while taunting the mother.

Seeing Cheese in the background of Aegon's petitions was cool. Also the painting on the wall during the infiltration where you see a dragon burning down the red keep was interesting.

I disagree with Joe on the title music. It's like the Star Wars theme, it's iconic and let's hope that this Universe never gets dragged to the lows of Mouse Wars.

Im fine if Daemon takes a back seat to the green brothers. I really want aegon in particular to earn his place amongst the rest of the characters.

Btw. We didn't see Janos Slynt kill that baby in the original GoT. It was also off-screen.

I’m just sad Paddy Considine as Viserys is now going to be absent from the series. He carried TF out of Season 1 (not that the other performances weren’t good, but his was just INCREDIBLE).

The only stupid part about the episode is there are literally zero guards guarding the king's kids. That was plain dumb. They could have wiped the whole royal family except for Aegon. Solid episode tho

Let’s talk about B&C specifically (That’s the name of the two guys who killed Aegon’s son if you’re a non book reader who didn’t have subtitles on): The whole reason why B&C is an iconic scene in the source material isn’t because of child murder, it’s because Helaena was sadistically tortured by Cheese and forced to pick between one of her sons with the only alternative being all her children, her mother and herself dying. And even when she tries to pick the younger, they kill the other one anyway with the intention of making him and Helaena remember she picked him to die. But in this version, they don’t even need her. Why don’t they kill them both? Or check to be sure? If they’re capable of going this far, why not go all the way? If the point isn’t to mentally scar Helaena as well, why even bother doing including her in the scene? It’s just a muted mistranslation of what was one of the most scarring and horrific moments in this entire saga. I wasn’t expecting them to show the killing blow but at least show Helaena plead for their lives, throw herself in their place, beg them to try anything else in the desperate hope of saving her children’s lives. But instead she just gives her son up for death immediately after trying to pawn off a necklace didn’t work, which weirdly only makes Helaena look worse in a scene that’s supposed that be the most sympathetic you can possibly feel for her given what she’s going through. I wasn’t expecting a literal recreation of the book scene but if you’re not willing to try and emulate the drama and horror of the moment, why even bother putting it in at all?

Honestly wasn't that impressed for the first episode. People were hyping it up like it was going to be something huge. I still can't wait for the rest of the show to progress though

That scene with the son was more messed up in the actual books

I just wonder why the White Walkers were a sort of discovery in GoT to the point of having to capture one when Cregan Stark knew 200 years before what they were fighting for real beyond the wall. I mean why do they lose that knowledge? Don't they have maesters up there?

While morally reprehensible, if Aegon is down to just a daughter, then this might have been a cannon shot to Green unity. Aegon has to either be a hypocrite and declare his daughter his heir, or make Aemond his heir. The disagreement will cause them to fragment.

8 episodes is fine but they should be releasing yearly then. 8 episodes and a 2 year wait is way too long.

In the book Aegon, and Helaena have a second son. Helaena chose the younger on to die, but they killed Jaehaerys instead. Maelore was the name of the younger son.

The difference in quality between this and The Acolyte is just baffling.

My man Alex wanted a single take shot of the beheading in full frame 🤣 bro said they pg-13’d it as if they would actually show a child being beheaded. The other murdered children like Robert’s bastards died the same way, camera cut away before the actual kill.

There is Interview with the vampire out there too - and it's second season is FANTASTIC! Given that it's also part of an entire multi show shared universe - and the insane gore and horror elements they managed to air - I'm surprised you guys AREN'T covering it!

Also the show and the boooks treat scorpions differently. Because in the books it still takes a 1 in a million shot in the eye to take down a dragon with a scorpion

I call BS on blood and cheese no checking the kid’s pants for which is a boy and a girl. You’re gonna go off of her word? Why would you not take 5 seconds to check for the boy?

I think the intro song brings me back to "omg new game of thrones episode!!" every single time. I hope they use it for all series from this universe :D just my opinion of course.

One small detail that I really liked on the wall: Lord Starke was carrying Ice, Ned's giant-ass sword. Been a while since we've seen that.

They really made Aegon super likeable imo. Like, I totally get him. He was told his entire life that the throne he's supposed to inheret won't go to him, so he's basically like "fuck it, I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I wanna do instead" when really the thing he always wanted was for his father to love him enough to give him the throne like he loved his daughter. So when he got the throne, he had a hard time believing it was actually happening. But now that he has it, he's well suited for it. He seems to have made a complete 180, and genuinely wants to make a difference. He seems to love his kids, and loves his sister, he seems to love being king and he has friends. He's practically sprawling all over the same throne that killed his dad, like the throne itself is accepting Aegon. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, I'm super curious how Aegon reacts. Game of Thrones IS BACK BABY!

Even as someone who read the books, that last scene fucked me up as a father of a four year old. Just the sound Jaehaerys made when they covered his mouth and the look of helplessness right before they killed him just flipped my stomach, and then when you hear the sound effects afterwards, it turned. When I went to bed I actually just snuck into our son’s room and held him a little tighter while he slept. Still a great episode though. We are back baby!

Was anyone else confused by the Helena’s reaction to her son just getting beheaded? She had the reaction as if she didn’t know the kid and then says “they got the boy”. Idk, just seemed a little off there

There are a lot of death scenes in GoT where we don't actually see the person being killed. We don't see Ned decapitation, we see Arya's face and what she's seeing: a bunch of birds taking flight. We don't see Robert's baby bastard being killed, we see her mother's reaction. We don't see Shereen burning to death, we see her mother's reaction. And I think this is way more impactful.

To put Alicent's "hypocritical" behavior into perspective, she had never had good sex until after Viserys was dead. She's making up for lost time. 😂

No they were looking for a son in the books too. Helena has 3 kids in the book , two boys and a girl . They make Helena choose which one of the boys to kill and she chooses the youngest one who isn’t the heir apparent. changing the theme would be a mistake, its iconic at this point and gives you the feeling youre in the same universe right away. also its a great piece of music. i hope they use it in all the coming shows in Westeros

Thank you for saying it Joe. Everytime the original GoT intro music starts playing, I cant help but to feel like they made a mistake. We all recognize it as the same universe but HOTD has its own distinct flavor. It DESERVES its own theme music!

Alex is proof that it's best to watch shows knowing as little as possible context as possible otherwise you get fixated on weird stuff like wanting to see more gruesome dead kids. It's better to just enjoy and not know alternate things that happened in other media.

Daemon 100% told both men to "Locate and slay Aemond Targaryan. He's got white hair and 1 eye. He's also quite good in a fight so you'll have to be careful." That's not verbatim but u get the point. Also I don't believe neither blood nor cheese knows one of the most famous men in the kingdoms who lives in the red keep where they both work and who flies the biggest dragon in the world. It doesn't make sense... it's like the director is going off of a script that ended up getting changed because they act like deamon gave them no info at all.. I thought they were above these missteps.🤦🏼‍♂️

I love the intro music and hope they never change it. Gets me hyped everytime. Only intro we actually watch.

I enjoy watching the kids. My feeling is that they already sidelined Daemon last year in favor of Vicerys and Rhaenyra. I mean, when does this guy get the screen time he deserves? Matt Smith deserves better. I’m tired of seeing him get shafted. If they have lower ratings this season then they might want to reconsider that for season 3

I enjoyed it. However, there is a video that reveals a summary of what occurred. Cheese grabs both kids and makes the mother choose. Then, cheese kills the one she didnt choose to make the other child feel hurt.

PG-d the episode?? The audio design really went in on that scene with the kid getting his head cut off, are you kidding me???? That scene was the most graphic of anything in GoT imo, and they didn't even show a visual of it. That's how insane the audio design was in making the viewer picture exactly what's happening as that poor little kid was screaming and you hear the blade cutting through his neck.

Imo, not showing the kids death is sorta scarier in my head. One of those tricks where not seeing it makes you picture it worse in your head. Kinda thought the red keep would be a tad bit more guarded though, unless its due to war time and men are spread then.

In the book Aegon and Helaena have three children. Jaehaerys, Jaehaera (twins) and Maelor. Blood and cheese make Helaena choose between Jaehaerys(heir) and Maelor(the younger son) or they'll kill everyone. Helaena chooses Maelor. They then tell Maelor that his mother doesn't want him and kill Jaehaerys anyway.

If I remember correctly, the book and fire blood is written from the perspective of a green supporter so it would make sense that they would change the history in the universe to have it where Rhaenyra always intended on, killing Aegons sons, rather than going, after Aemond. makes her look more evil and cruel from an in universe perspective.

I was under the impression that Daemon would be the one to be killing Aemon not send some assassins to do it. But I mean if the books does it then I don't really have anything to complain, but I just think his character would be the one to personally get his hands dirty.

I love Alex, I also hate Alex. It wasn't 2 days from j leaving dragonstone for the riverlands and winterfell. Unless he just assumes ravens are also able to fly from dragonstone to winter fell in 2 days. Which has never been established. Classic GOT "information takes a long time to travel" alicent said she sent the note to rhynaera. So add a few days, plus a month(based on GOT timeline) and yeah, jaherys grew up. Not including I'm surprised read the book and didn't mention they hung out in winter fell for months.

Love these reviews but wish there was a separate section for book spoilers. I don’t want to know things coming in the future based on the books.

I think it's more horryfing when you don't actually see the process but only hear it. So your imagination creates the gore scene. It's not PG 13

Strongly disagree on the idea that they toned down the death at the end of the episode. Sometimes less is more and I think this is one of those cases. The sounds alone are horrific and leaves it to the imagination. Not sure how else they would have done it short of showing them saw a kids head off, which feels unnecessary.

I think this episode was a solid 8.5/10 for me. I believe Alex maybe wanted the son to tell or cry for his mother for help as she’s leaving the room. Definitely not a pg-13 scene cause I felt sick lmao

The first season already eclipsed GoT. HoTD has a stronger start, more concise and meaningful story with characters who are acted brilliantly.

It was pretty good until the last 10 minutes... that writing at the end was kinda GOT Season 8ish. So hopefully it gets better. Haha
