Charlie I have a question. We know that part of the bonding ritual involves giving a babe or child a dragon’s egg to sleep with and bond over. It’s usually one per person but is that only because they’re given one egg? Why was Daenerys able to bond with three dragons? Is it just that others were only given one egg but had they had more they could bond with more than one dragon? Or was it the magic ritual she did when burning Drogo that allowed her to bond with three dragons? I think clearly she is the only one they bonded with, because Rhaegal doesn’t stay with Jon like a bonded dragon does. Rhaegal let Jon ride because 1) he’s Targaryen with dragon’s blood and 2) Daenerys loved Jon and so those sentiment bled through Rhaegal’s feelings. For some reason it’s not mentioned much how Daenerys is the only known person to bond with more dragons than one at a time.

Grrm said you need Valyrian blood to bond with a dragon. That is how the 40 valyrian families of the freehold conquered the world. It’s why Drogon took a liking to Brown Ben Plumm in the series. The shows are separate from the books. Yes I believe Valyrians have interbred with dragons along with dark magic. It’s why many Targaryen babies are born looking like a malformed dragon.

GRRM Himself even said when asked a question at a con that “the blood of old Valyria just makes it much easier to control a dragon.” So it’s possible that people without the blood to claim a dragon it’s just much harder and it’s already really hard

They did blood magic and other magical crafts, they also did create abominable creatures as well. They even had a an island where they created abominations with humans and other creatures. Pretty gruesome stuff. Valyrians were so powerful in magic that tegu literally used to communicate though a glass like cellphones from wherever they were

The Valaryons moved to Westeros because they were not Dragonlords in Valyria, but they did have a great navy in Valyria, and so they moved to the Narrow Sea to have some sort of power

george already confirmef that septon barth got most of the dragon lore correctly, so magic is definitely part of the dragon bond, which explains why there is nobody who is 0% from the 40 dragon families and their dragonseeds ever got to ride a dragon. jace technically being a dragonseed is an example edit: even corlys velaryon has a targ ancestor, which is why addam got to claim seasmoke

See I like to think that the Targaryens had given out the “Baratheon” name to their Bastards born on Dragonstone to adhere to the Westerosi Bastard Traditions but once Orys, half brother of Aegon the Conquerer had become a Seated Lord in Storms End from then on Orys did a somewhat similar thing to Daemon Blackfyre by starting his own Branch family etc. I mean even the Name “Baratheon” doesn’t feel Westerosi as most family names are short and to the point I;e Stark, Tully, Arryn, Tyrell, Tarley, etc whereas the name Baratheon feels more foreign just like how you have the Celtigar, Velaryon & Targaryen names. Just my thoughts

@@whoschach yeah my bad, I get a lot of the names mixed up, GRRM has an odd naming scheme so I always get some names mixed up or different Aemons or Rhaenas mixed up. But also when it comes to the Dondarrions, I can’t help but think GRRM has special meanings for those houses and their family sigils also, I mean look at the Hightowers & Daynes, they’re supposedly descended from Essos/Valyria Origins, the Durrandons were Almost like “green men” from the tales and depictions, even down to their sigil and the crown the last Storm King wore, House Durrendon have heavy Old Gods feel to them, it’s why Storms End has ties to the North through Bran the Builder same as with the Hightower. Plus I only think this because the ‘eon’ at the end is kind of like the VelaRYON or TargaRYEN & cause Orys is the first Baratheon we hear about and none are mentioned before, also would make sense given almost every Aegon has to go through a “Secret Bastard tradition” but idk if yous really want to get into that theory 🥱

Technically she wouldn't need to, the Blood Magic that was performed during her sacrifice was to cause the petrified dragon eggs to hatch.

As Charlie said the magic there woke dragons from stone/petrified old eggs. Daenerys was already a dragon blooded Targaryen. The magic may also explain why she was able to bond with three dragons instead of just one though. Usually it’s only one but she was able to bond with all three of them.

@@blackflagsnroses6013 She didn't. She is bonded to Drogo, the other two are just satellites. But Danys bond is still different to all the ones which came prior because technically she is bonded to dead dragons aka resurrected ones, since the eggs were petrified. She is basically bonded to dragons that went through what Lady Stoneheart, Beric Dondarrion or Karl Drogo experienced. So there was black magic needed to revive them since in asoiaf you have to sacrifice life to bring other life back. I don't think she can recreate it because the whole thing was more or less a coincidence. she didn't plan on hatching the dragon eggs but she wanted to burn herself with them after she has lost everything and even if she did, they wouldn't have hatched without the prior 3 sacrifices and the weird shit the witch did in between while dany was still thinking she is helping her bring back kahl drogo.

What if dragons were bred like dogs... and that's what they were doing in Valyria... and they're all capable of having regular human riders? Kinda like dragons were original like wolves, but they created "dogs" through breeding the ones that seemed to take on riders. Then the real secret would be Targaryens are the only ones still breeding them, so of course they have the most *bonded* dragons. Like if you raise a puppy from birth, of course it'll bond with you. Or how some older dogs that are used to having owners will know how to live with a new owner, but maybe the thing is dragons are a little more temperamental, so they don't *bark*, they just *eat* you if they don't like you lol. There's no "house training" period, they just like you or they don't lol. I just feel like dragons are just big lizard puppies lol.

Nope, you just need Valyrian blood. Remember the Targaryens are only just ‘one family’ from Old Valyria whilst there were hundreds of Dragon-Lords and Riders in Valyria.

There is a kernel of truth in that not just Valyrians blood but dragonsblood. I don’t know how in the history of Valyria which specific families were chosen to go through the magical process of the blood mages to turn them into dragon blooded but only those who were gifted that blood magic to bond with dragons and inherit that can bond with dragons. Not all Valyrians were dragonblooded. The trick the dragonlords pulled is claiming that only the purest blooded and therefore those within the elite dragon houses could bond, when in reality the inheritance of any dragon’s blood made one capable of bonding. Perhaps less of a chance the more diluted the dragon’s blood is but still you don’t have to be a “pure blood.”

Maybe he read about those dragons and they lived in old valyria before the doom but those 3 dragons you named are definitely not ever a factor and didn't belong to the targaryens at any point after the doom. All known dragons related to the targaryens have been named and those dragons are not among them.

I just thought it meant you need to have Valyrian blood, so theoretically Celitgars and Velaryons could. It’s still risky though bc it’s not like ALL valyrians can bond. Basically Jacaerys isn’t being wild or breaking any crazy ground at all, he’s saying people with Valyrian blood, and names that aren’t Targaryen are possible

Great topic. I always said the story of Aegon should be a trilogy in the movies, like Dune, with it starting of with Old Valeria and the Doom. A cool dream sequence like in Terminator 2 where Danny the dreamer wakes up in a cold sweat after we see one of the biggest apocalyptic scenes in movies showing the Doom of Valeria. Aenar, probably would have not permitted it. Aegon the Conqueror also, probably would not have wanted him to try. But there's no canon that covers that detail.

You used this term, "the Cult of Ascension" to refer to a pre-Red God/R'hllor group, but for the life of me I can't find anywhere else online where it is referenced, and i don't remember hearing it in the show (which would make it something new within the televised adaptation canon). Can you point to where you're getting this term from? Are you perhaps meaning to refer to the Cult of Starry Wisdom, which we know is a GRRM adaptation from Lovecraftian lore?

Roberts grandmother was a Targaryen, if I'm remembering correctly. He could've had enough dragonblood to be accepted by a dragon. In the books the dragons are 'friendly' with a Plum who has Targaryen ancestors, and those were much further away than Roberts grandmother.

enough targaryen blood.... just recently saw how much dany had and believe me you dont need as much as you may think. Also nettles valyrian heritage may be nonexistent. The author expliticly writes how she tamed shepstealer. Not through some magical bounding, instead she brings sheeps to the dragon until it lets her ride it. It would also explain rhaenyras action against nettles. She wanted her not dead because she was sleeping with her husband,, but because she was proof that magical bloodline was not an explizit requierement for dragon riding which could become dangerous for her families powerbase.

Aegon doesn't and he communicates with Sunfyre. Maybe it's like how Catholic priests only used Latin so that the plebes couldn't understand anything.

You cannot have a Doom of Valyria prequel without mentioning Ashai and how they rose from farmers to magicians. Also I would love to see the Valyrians in the Rhoynar War and the different type of dragons, we know the Targaryans had war dragons. Were there racing dragons or dragons that were used for shipping goods?

I'm sorry... but you said that Corlys The Sea Snake Velaryon, Lord of Tides, The Pirate Prince just didn't want to bond with a dragon - and... that's just not right. He certainly didn't think he could bond with a dragon, and Laenor & Laena's mother is Rhenys, a dragon rider. If Corlys had any idea that he could ride a dragon, he would have one.

He does have valyrian blood, through Corlys. Who got it through his ancestors intermarrying with the targaryens. Also the velyaron's are from valyria too.

While watching Sunday's episode of house of the dragon, 🐉 I couldn't help but compare it to some recent star wars offering. It feels much larger and more filled out. The characters actually live long enough to mean something when they die.

As per the books, Nettles doesn't just walk up to Sheepstealer and claim the dragon. She feeds it sheep (the dragon's favourite prey) for several days, gradually making Sheepstealer more and more amenable to her presence, before attempting to ride it. This is landmark for two reasons, not one: 1. She may or may not have Targaryen blood, but she definitely doesn't look like one 2. She managed to bond with an erstwhile wild dragon, something that nobody else had done for an adult wild dragon in a while

The show definitely has to goes in this direction, because of the speculation of who is the father of Alyen and Addam . If it is to be believed it is Corlys like they are going in the shows , then it would have to be explained how they or one of them could be a Dragon rider , when Corlys is not of Targaryen blood . This might also set up the concept of how one Dragon rider can bond with two Dragons and fly in unison like Deany did with all three of her Dragons . This might be in the show either with Deamon or Rheanrya her self . A lot of book readers constantly argue this concept, but they keep forgetting the show is not book canon, and besides that , the. lol itself was written by GRRM to purposely show inconsistent with in its entirety, based on the different accounts of who we are getting the information from . It was done this way to mimic our own history and how our own History might not be as accurate as we all think. Personally I think that is brilliant! And it definitely lends to the show in how they could change things up to give us something fresh and unpredictable.

Nice breakdown Charlie, thanks! Slight clarification, while the Velaryons never became dragon riders (because they were not originally highborn in Valyria), they were a full fledged Valyrian family. Which means they wouldn’t have needed to intermarry with Targs in order to ride. It certainly helped a ton, and it’s unlikely they would ever find their way onto a dragon without that, but it was still technically possible due to their own Valyrian blood.

In the show Aegon the Conquerer’s dream is said to have been passed down from one king to the next but how did it go from Aenys to Maegor and then to Jahaerys? I don’t think any of those chose their successor in that order. It doesn’t make sense
