I think Price is an excellent character and surprisingly well written. The actions that you mention to be strange, I think are the ones that make him interesting. Like him wanting to save his wife after just trying to kill her. Price seems to be a man who lives for fun and games. Even his failing marriage is a competition to him. But he still cares for people, including his wife.

Pritchard was actually my favorite character in this movie. By the way, it's not strange that Price would be concerned for Evelyn after knocking her through that door. He obviously realized that was a dangerous room and decided that whether he wanted Evelyn dead or not, nobody should go in that room at all. It's one of those situations where you realize that personal motives take a back seat to survival. You can practically see Price's mind shift gears as he sees the room and understands what is in there.

a couple things. the reason pryce and wife hate each other is she was cheating on him and has tried to kill him multiple times cause shes nuts and a gold digger. also the cellphone thing isnt that far fetched in 1999 you would lose signal if you sneezed let alone went to a fortress in the middle of nowhere
@LibraGamesUnlimited
@LibraGamesUnlimited 6 лет назад
Up until the reveal that she was cheating on him, I felt their hate was less real and more playful. Which is why he seemed so upset when she appeared to die and why he was trying to save her from the shadow thing. I think even despite the cheating, on his part anyway, a lot of it was just talk, like they were sick and twisted and it was a weird kind of foreplay. On her part, the wanting him dead seemed to be real though. Perhaps he was only upset becasue she didn't die by his hand.

Price is one of those people in love with a toxic abuser. The more cruel Evelyn is to him the more he craves her. I never saw anything incongruous about his obsession. The man needed psychological help for his masochism, but I can completely see when he plays into the conceit that he hates Evelyn. He has a little too much pride to openly grovel for Evelyn's affection, so he plays cat and mouse with her. Maybe her psychopathy is what attracts him to her. For Evelyn it's hate; for Price she's his poison of choice. When the house gets going, what song is blasting? That's right, Sweet Dreams are Made of These, "some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be used by you." Right after the house took Price's beloved dominatrix and made her part of the cursed souls trapped in that asylum.

12:40 Those are actually based on real sculptures by the artist Honoré Fragonard. They are in a Musume called Musée Fragonard d'Alfort in southeast Paris. The story behind the one sitting on the horse is said to be his girlfriend who passed away due to illness. He didn't want to bury her, so he skinned her, her horse, and preserved the muscles in some kind of wax or varnish. If I'm remembering correctly. For comparison, it's like a French version of the Mutter Museum Philadelphia.
@Khenfu_Cake
@Khenfu_Cake Год назад
I believe these type of "sculptures" made with real carcasses are called écorchés (flayed figures). Fragonard used his girlfriend's remains for the Horseman of the Apocalypse exhibition?? That's kinda fucked up. Then again he was dismissed from the veterinary school he was a professor at for being a madman. I doubt the school took well to his use of animal and human remains in his biblical themed exhibits.

Charles Simmons apparently the doctor was a good person who actually wanted to help the patients but he ended up bringing an idol with a demon trapped inside. The demons breaks free and turns everyone evil. The doc realizes this when he has a clear moment of consciousness and closes every one in right before getting killed to prevent the evil from getting out.

17:00 - The "ghosts are real" twist is too easy. I think a better twist would be to age up Price's tech guy who was manning the traps and have it revealed in the end that the tech guy was one of the patients in the asylum (as a young child) and that he set up extra traps as a way of teaching Price what real fear is like.

Some see it as a bit of a copout but you find out in the sequel none of it was really Vannacutt's fault. As it happens Vannacutt was once a good man and doctor who genuinely wanted to help people, to that end he'd decorate the facility with art he curated from all over the world. Sadly one artifact he obtained was in fact an idol....of a demon called "baphomet" it's said once the idol was in the asylum it took over Vannacutt and his staff, it's then all the evil doings by the Dr. and his staff began, after they died the possessed Dr. kept using the idol to control everyone after death, hence why they attack the characters.

I watched this when I was a kid and it gave me nightmares for a week. Rewatching this, I just find it a schlocky halloween film. The problem I have is that I remember seeing this in HBO and it having certain scenes or alternate scenes. For examples, I remember it having a more video gamey intro sequence than the one it actually had. With like a red tinted intro with the names of the cast. I also vividly remember the scene with the lady with the camera dying being different. After filming Vannacut and the nurses, she turns around and sees one of the patients with his head moving back and forth at an alarming rate who then moves quickly toward her with her screaming. In the actual film, it's just some guy with a prosthetic face looking goofy and she screams.

Pretty sure he didn't mention the cameras to the others because he didn't want them to know about them for several obvious reasons. No, why he didn't look himself, probably because he couldn't tell anyone how he knew what he saw without them thinking he killed her himself (which they already suspected).

Did you ever do (or plan to do) Dark Castle's House Of Wax from 2005? Also, many who've reviewed it on RU-vid so far mistakenly believe it to be a remake of the '50s film of the same name, which also starred Vincent Price. However, the film only uses the name, which was purchased because it was public domain, and the element of people being entombed in wax, but noting else from the film was used in it.

No I haven't reviewed it but may do in the future, There is of course my Patreon page www.patreon.com/DeusdaeconReviews as an option for review request, Not necessary but its an option.

That doesn't mean it's not a remake. There have been plenty of remakes who just use the name and the basic idea. The part of that movie that I hated the most (and there were many) was that the buildings were actually wax too. That was really dumb. LIke they would last through a single summer. :)

Thank you for making this review. This movie was the first horror videotape that I bought back when I was 16 in 1999. I loved this movie and even though I had had a taste for horror, (Pet Sematary was the first horror movie I ever saw when I was just a little kid) watching this one was one of those definite "I will always be a horror fan"- moments. Watched this about a month ago and yeah, the movie is lacking A LOT but it still has a special place in my heart. And the fact that Spike from Buffy TVS was the camera man in the beginning. EDIT: Famke Janssen is sooo freaking gorgeous in this movie

6:00 the music that plays during that scene as well as some others with that music is one if not the best music played in a movie

Is it just me, or does Price's guest list include references to Seward (Dracula) and Adler (Sherlock)? Or am I just looking too hard at upper-class surnames?

There was an extra scene with Combs, but it was part of a deleted subplot that was frankly too silly, even for this movie. It basically would have ended the movie with a cheap joke. Yeah.

Oh my god! I've seen this movie dozens of times but never noticed the cheap cgi eye movements on the stained glass ceiling. It looks at the guests angrily but is a blink and you missed it kinda thing.

When I think about it. that ghost image and how it decompose people in seconds.. It reminds me of the 'shadow' and ghost of Mamiya, in how it burns you up from inside.
