This is the last tutorial in the series where we will be mapping our video content on to the house using After Effects. Whether it’s your aim to create digital decorations for Halloween or you want to design Christmas video mapping and other holiday projections, this series of tutorials will give you a beginner's knowledge of how to get started 3d projection mapping a house or building.
By the end of this video, you will have learned how to set things up so that it will only take you 10 minutes to map your house or building from any projector position. You don’t have to have a laptop connected to your projector. You also don’t need to project from the point of view of the audience. You can even project using multiple projectors without multiplying your workload.

@@LumaBox Maybe cover some other things for mapping content onto the house? I've found that I'm struggling with adding normal video content and making it "mapped" to the house when it's not using a spotlight (e.g. your Thriller video doesn't use the spotlight effect like video 4 in this series) E.g. I'm trying to do a snowfall effect on my house, but currently the video is just a big square and not mapped to the areas of the house. But if I were to use the spotlight effect like in the previous video it wouldn't show.

This is a great starting point. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. I'm curious how you might do a multiple-projector setup that can wrap content around a corner or complex object. I live on a corner and would love to have things interacting from the front to the side.
@LumaBox
@LumaBox Год назад
That’s totally possible with this method. If you’ve watched the second video in the series about making a guide, instead of exporting an image for just the front, you’d also do one for the side. Then you’d make outlines for the side surfaces too and arrange them next to the front surfaces. The aim is to make a set of outlines that are as if your projection surfaces were made of paper and you have unwrapped them and laid them out flat
@stephen.rutherford
@stephen.rutherford Год назад
@@LumaBox Yes! Since I wrote this comment, I've also seen your tutorials on using two projectors on the wedding cake which helps tremendously! I've had to do similar things with LED video boards, but the mapping was "built in" to the boards themselves so the setup isn't something I really had to deal with. I just made an After Effects template to fit the mapping that was already there :) Thanks so much for the reply!

Thank you so much for making this tutorial! It is by far the best one on RU-vid. You mentioned using multiple projectors. How would that work?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
Well adding multiple displays would be very simple if you were using mapping software like MadMapper. With After Effects... that's not something I've done, but I'd imagine you'd use a display splitter like a DualHead2Go and then set that (double) display as your display output from After Effects. It would be treated as one output but it actually contains two projectors, thanks to the splitter. Does that make any sense?

Thanks so much for the videos Georgia. I've watched more times than I can count. A question though regarding content that you want to have span multiple sections that are at different distances from the projector. Do you replicate the content for each area (like the left and right side of the front of your house) and mask out the appropriate content? Or do you simply have the content span both areas at the same, causing a bit of a size difference between the 2 areas. Thanks again!
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 9 месяцев назад
I compose the show across a large composition that contains my surfaces laid out side-by-side. The surfaces are the correct scale relative to one another in the composition so the scale of the content is also consistent when it moves from surface to surface. Note that I work orthographically (without perspective) so distance from the projector, for me, causes no issue of changing scale.

Hi Luma, thank you so much for these tutorials! I am using it for a fashion project for my senior thesis capstone. I was wondering, if I were to turn on the projector at a specific time, would I have to set up the video playing every time i turn it on, or would the setting just resume to what it was last set up as? I basically want to avoid the menu screen being projected and want to go straight to the video if that makes sense. Thank you so much!
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 2 года назад
I think it would depend on your projector model. If you’re turning the projector on from and off state, I think it’s quite likely you would see some sort of branding or message when you turn the unit on. I think a better idea might be to keep the projector on and turn on the video signal when your are ready for the show to start

Great tutorials!! If I wanted to use two projectors to get better detail across the front of my house, should I use after effects to create the content and then madmapper to map across both projectors? Or does after effects have the capability to map the video across two projectors?
@LumaBox

You *can* use AE to map with the two projectors but I think you're definitely on the right track if you're thinking about using MadMapper to handle the mapping - it will be much more straightforward

Thanks for the incredible videos! The way you express your knowledge is not only extremely intuitive but you easily communicate complex topics in a very understandable way. I've been wanting to get into projection mapping for some time and I'm binging your videos. :) Quick question on how to set up for multiple projectors. The face of my house is fairly wide and my current projectors are too dim when moved back far enough to cover the entire house. I fortunately have two projectors. I would like to let each projector take one half of the house. What would your suggestion be to have a content somewhat seamlessly play across the house yet be rendered for each individual projector? I can handle the actual syncing and playing of the videos, I just am not quite sure how to set them up in After Effects so that the content is fairly well stitched together. I'm a little afraid if I do two different house images like you suggested in a comment down below for someone on a corner that it will be hard to align the content across the two different images. Is there a way I can lay the content out across the house much like in your tutorials, yet somehow export a section just for one projector or the other?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox Год назад
Hi Matt. A good question as you start to think about more advanced mapping setups. To help me answer, can you first tell me if you've decided to go with the orthographic method (like I show in these tutorials) or have you outlined your house from a static point of view?

P.s. sorry my response took a while!
@MattPenner
@MattPenner Год назад
@@LumaBox No worries. Took me forever to respond to your question too! 😂 I am using the orthographic method like you showed. It looks much easier in the long run to have a single compilation of the front of my house while being able to somehow export multiple portions from the view of the projector at that location. And, of course, adjust if the projector moves between seasons.

Thank you for these videos! They were inspiring! I don't think I would have attempted this without seeing them. I really enjoyed the house mapping/animation parts in videos 1-3, but I got lost starting in video 4 when you started grouping things into compositions. Specifically, I'm having difficulty getting the corner pin effect working in step 5... I'm not immediately sure where I went wrong. To simplify for now, I'm starting only with one region of my house (the garage), with only 2 mins of one simple free video downloaded from RU-vid... - I believe I exported it properly into a PNG sequence at the end of video 3... - I think I imported it right at the beginning of step 4. (in video 4 I didn't see you import it... it looks like you had done that "off camera" between ending video 3 and starting video 4.) - I didn't follow exactly what your reasoning was for combining layers/compositions the way you did... It looks like you were trying to crop extra video to save storage/render time and then apply corner pinning to multiple items instead of just one item. Can you provide additional documentation/description of what your intent was here? Thank you again!
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 2 года назад
Hi Tim. I think you've pretty much grasped the reasoning. I'm making compositions for the 4 surfaces that need to be mapped separately: left house, left roof, right house, right roof. By trimming off everything that doesn't belong within those areas I'm preventing unwanted content going on the wrong surfaces and by putting them all inside a comp, I only have to apply the corner pin to that comp for it to affect everything inside.

Wondering if you do any adjustments to the projector settings itself (such as keystone) - and if you do, is that performed on a flat surface first, or do you make those adjustments while it's on the building?

Thank you for this great tutorial, and this is super valuable and easy to understand. I have one question. Why did you use a media player and a projector separately? I imagined that some projectors have USB ports so you do not need to use a media player. I am a super beginner and just started to learn this topic so it might be a stupid question but it would be great if you share your knowledge. Thank you.
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
I think that's true about being able to play from a USB or SD card (although my projector doesn't have this capability). The media player also gives you control over how the media plays back (looping, random shuffling etc) which might be needed for your show.

Aside from environmental situations such as where you have available to set up the projector, are there other advantages to using a short throw projector in these situations? I have seen that BenQ offers 1080p projectors with the same or higher lumen count that aren't short throw for $100-$200 less. What is your opinion on this? Thank you!
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
Don't take this as gospel, but I think if you've got the space to use a standard lens projector and the unit is cheaper, then there's no reason why you wouldn't... These are amazing tutorials. I'm trying to connect all the dots still and while I think most of it makes sense...still a few questions. Do you have any tutorials that show using a 2nd projector with the various house pieces you have 3d rendered and created layers for? I'm assuming that the corner pinning helps adjust the angles of content to show correctly on the house. I think this resolves the issue I've had where some masks have to be rotated because of physical skewing. Thanks again...great stuff.
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
I don't have any tutorials on that topic yet - but I'm sure I will in the future. Are you using After Effects for the mapping or another application? Either way, you're right - the corner pinning is used to adjust content for the skewing caused by projecting from an angle.
@gmcateer08
@gmcateer08 3 года назад
@@LumaBox Thank you. Yes, using AE. I think my challenge is determining where to break the house into planes for corner pinning. It's all basically at same plane except that with single projector as you move from the middle it skews slightly...but no clear point to put a break. It's more of a gradual thing....It's always improving...but challenging :-)
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
I think I read over on Facebook that you're taking your projector in each night. Are you going to re-corner pin each time or try to match the projector position as much as possible?
@gmcateer08
@gmcateer08 3 года назад
@@LumaBox I've been just matching the position every time. I have an "alignment" clip that plays for about two minutes at the start and it works ok. I have about an hour of content playing and having to re-export that every time with new corner pinning would be a pain. BUT...if/when I get that configured, it will make a 2nd projector much easier to coordinate I believe.

I have a question, I don't know if it's a silly one but I don't know anything about projectors, in my school we used to use projectors for our presentations and when the background of the slides was totally black you could see the color black, kind of like what you get with LCD screens compared to OLED screens that the color black is off. I see that in the video the dark parts are not seen or emit light, if I buy a projector to do this should the projector have a special feature or is it just a setting on the light that most projectors have?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
Often you can see light emitted by projectors in areas that are supposed to be black. My blacks are not in fact truly black but they are pretty good and hardly noticeable. The video helps with this because the shot is exposed to capture the details of the bright projections and crush the black or close-to-black areas down to levels the eye interprets as black. Using a good quality projector that is bright with a good contrast ratio will help with this issue.

Hi Azhar. If you watch the 5-part series this video is a part of, those questions are covered. As for connecting a projector, Windows: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HoCHFjCTXNY.html, Mac: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yhG7fsR7sM0.html

Is it possible to apply this concept using mad mapper or lightform creator instead of Adobe AE? Or are there other ways to do it on these other platforms?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
Yes it absolutely is. The principles are the same and usually even more straightforward with applications tailored towards projection mapping exclusively. I decided to do everything in AE to keep the costs lower (assuming one had already purchased AE to create the animations)

But do i need to do the same process as taking pics of the house and using blender first, or is the spacial scanning function on madmapper enough?

The special scanning method is different from this workflow

Could you make a video on how to do this with 2 projectors on one house?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 2 года назад
You could just go through the steps of Tutorial 5 again but for the second projector. Or you could use something like MadMapper ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YVgUWpfaRNU.html

If I video map with After Effects, does that mean I don't need a Mad Mapper software? thank you

If you follow this tutorial series, no you don't need MadMapper

HELP, LUMA!! I followed all you tutos, finished all my project and was about to go outside with my projector then realize that the menu In the "video preview" on my After Effect CS6 does't match yours ( ie. don't have the "enable Mercury Transit" box , etc...) Can't even see the two displays, even if I have extended my desktop. Any advice? Can I stiil configure ( and finish) my project in CS6, or am I stuck?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox Год назад
Stupid question but you have a projector correctly connected don't you? I don't know off the top of my head. If you're not finding any results by googling the issue, I'd recommend getting in touch with adobe support because they'll know much more than me

@@LumaBox To answer your question, yes, I made a test with a second monitor connected to my laptop via HDMI. Know what? the strange thing is, In Premiere CS6, it works fine! It is not called Mercury transmit, but I do can select my output on one of my two options. Strange. I wonder why the dialog box is different in AE CS6. I will keep searching in Google. Thanks for trying to help, it's much appreciated. And even if the outcome wouldn't be a happy one, Still I've learned à LOT of Stuff. Thanks again. Wish me luck.

How would we set up after-effects if we have multiple projectors?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
To be honest, if you're starting to get into using multiple projectors, your life would be made much easier to move over to a professional application for handling projection mapping specifically - something like MadMapper, Resolume, etc. There are a few ways you could approach using multiple projectors in AE. If you intend to play your video off a media player (like I do in the video) then the simplest way is to go through the process shown in tutorial 5/5 for one projector, and then go through it again for each additional projector.

@@LumaBox I know this is a very basic tutorial but it would be awesome to know to scale it up with multiple projectors new designs. Maybe make an “advanced method” where you would map something bigger and include more effects?
@imgamerboyryan
@imgamerboyryan 3 года назад
how would you adapt this to multiple projectors?
@LumaBox
@LumaBox 3 года назад
If you wanted to still use After Effects, I imagine you would use a display splitter (like a DualHead2Go or similar) to make a double-wide display made up of both projector outputs, then select that as your output display in AE. But I should say I haven't done this myself.
