Great video. I am three months into home/pet sitting within a 100 m radius and have 10 clients. I've learned some things to ask about ahead: 1) water and electric shut offs, 2) light switches, 3) location of first aid stuff, 4) what neighbors are like, 5) what safety concerns there are, 6) where are the cleaning supplies. I've also learned to bring extra socks, lots of easy-to-prepare snacks and meals, my own little cleaning supply tote, my own condiments, very comfy clothing. I do not expect any food to be supplied, but do expect something to make coffee in, wifi access, and a place to work on my laptop. I make it a point to leave the home cleaner than I found it. It's a great lifestyle even though I always, always forget something after I leave!

Hi, Malina! Thank you for this video ❤ I'm a college student considering taking a year off after my graduation to experience a lot of budget friendly ways to travel. This was very helpful. I also like your editing style, very cool ✨ The only thing I would change is that sometimes the music in the video overlaps your voice and is a bit distracting (I'm watching this in march 22 so idk if the comment is valid anyway hehe) Hope you're having a good time wherever you are right now!

Legit question RE "Use of car included" - This sounds incredibly convenient! My only concern is dealing with police in the event of a routine traffic stop. You are in a car you don't own, possibly with a license from another state/country - It seems things could get VERY complicated. - Have you had to deal with this or know of anyone who has? If so what was the outcome?
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 2 года назад
Hey Michael! This is something I always run by my insurance company + ask the home owners to do as well since every country is different! I had it once in England where a homeowner needed to put me "temporarily" on their insurance for i think £50 for the month? In the US my experience has been more laid back in that my coverage covers me if I get in a wreck in a friends car... Traffic stop wise, I've never had this happen, but I think just calling the homeowner would work! Or maybe even if you feel more comfortable, having something typed out and signed by them?

I am considering starting to try Housesitting. However, my top concern is in regards to safety and danger. What are your thoughts and personal experiences regarding how you feel about your safety when housesitting?
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 2 года назад
hey samantha! For me I do the same thing when I do house sit as I do when I travel regularly -- research the area, be aware and on alert in places i've never been... with house sitting it is nice because you can talk to the home owner as well and ask for advice on places to avoid in the city, things to be aware of, etc.

@@MalinaPadgett so I've done a few more after I posted this and people say this all the time: you really do have SO much time on your hands when your house sitting. My last 2 house sits the home owners were unhappy bc I misplaced a few things or forgot to turn lights off things like that. It's hard when the animals start to act up due to being unhappy with the owner gone. So I was so focused on cleaning and giving them extra attention that I forgot things like washing sheets when I left and keeping certain doors closed. I've house sat a lot of animals with overweight issues. Has nothing to do with the job but, it just required more attention like medication... I was very uncomfortable with wiping a cat after she used the bathroom... but, I didn't know how bad it was when the owner let me know beforehand. Still glad that I got to experience this, just glad it's over. I can't choose a favorite state they were all great.

Thoughts on working while house sitting? Are they normally comfortable with you leaving for a few hours of the day?
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 3 года назад
absolutely! i work online so i haven't needed to leave for work purposes, but it's all about about communicating your schedule with the homeowners. the only housesit that i had where that would have been an issue was because the dog had special needs

I guess most hosts make 2 weeks offers (if not less). I guess it would be exhausting to move from one house-sitting to the next. Or can you get to get by taking on only 2 months long offers?
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 3 года назад
For me it's just been about planning in advance so I can be more selective about the sits I take on that fit into the 1-2+ month range. The more reviews you get and the more established you get the more you'll be able to plan your sits out further in advance and be more selective.

What is the acceptance rate for first time house sitter?
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 2 года назад
it is definitely hard to get that first sit! i recommend targeting somewhere that either has a ton of sits available - london is a good choice - or somewhere that does not have a lot of applicants. when you "view date" on a TrustedHousitters listing, you can see how many people have applied for that sit!

I'm from Portugal and want to apply to a long term sitting (more than 6 months) in a different European country. How do I get an authorization to stay in a foreign country long term? Do trusted house sitters help with that? I can't find this information anywhere. Thanks.
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 2 года назад
hi Raquel! I know this can be frustrating! I think the only way you would be able to do a long term sit that you need a visa for is if you were doing it through a paid service where they could sponsor you. Since TH is a "trade" type of housesitting, they don't do anything with visas
@incoplanje7392
@incoplanje7392 2 года назад
Also, you don't need a visa in most of the other European countries. You have a European passport. :)

hey Igor! If you're interested in doing paid house or pet sitting I recommend focusing on one city or market and building a portfolio of clients from there. Starting with a service like Rover is a great way to get going!

Hello!!! My only question is how do people from other countries make the step to trust u?? I mean even if u have references, would be not prefer someone from their own country??? I am asking because I wanna do it but I guess have to be hard. And how much time before u have to house sitting u have to travel to the country?? I mean for time to buy flight and everything because some countries u need visa and time to do it hehehe... sorry for all my questions but I really wanna know to do it.
@MalinaPadgett
@MalinaPadgett 3 года назад
Great questions! It's really like applying for a job. Before I do a housesit, I "interview" with the homeowner. In my experience, it's been more about if the two of you click and not if you're from the same country. As far as traveling to the country beforehand, I always discuss with the homeowners if they would like me to come a few days early to ensure a great transition and start to the housesit. As far as visas go, once you get the hang of it, you'll have your travel schedule planned out months in advance so you should have plenty of time to prepare for visas, flights, etc. :)
