The problem isn't so much the repairs. Although Centerpoint could certainly do better. The real problem is that they refuse to bury many of the powerlines and leave them exposed to wind and debris damage. This happened in the hurricane of 2008 and they've known about this solution for years but refuse to do it as it would be expensive and would affect profits in the short term. They would much rather inconvenience customers with days or even weeks of power failures. As emergency repairs would be cheaper in the long run.

Even though they just neglected all those lines is why they fell during all these storms.

Nobody expects they don't stand a chance of losing power in a hurricane, I was out for 5 days after hurricane Sandy hit up here - and understandable because there were a good dozen large trees down on the lines in the say 2 miles around my house, the entire state was similar, and obviously they work on the biggest "hits" first (and closest to the power distribution center) and work their way out... And they hire tree crews ahead of them , so it was even 2-3 days before I could even get out of my neighborhood (2 of the 3 roads out anyways). But honestly by a week they were down to maybe a hundred mostly individual homes (lines to the house town). There were some that were out nearly 2 weeks, but overall like 90% were back in a week or less. I'll be honest though, I was fine without power... I have a lot of batteries, etc, charged up, plus I make sure to have lots of canned & dry foods, a water filter I can purify water from my rain barrels, a wood stove & grill for cooking. I've told people even here where such hurricane level events are rare to get prepared - many don't listen of course though quite a few have generators... But if you are in a place that encounters almost yearly hurricanes and you aren't prepared for even a week without power, sorry but that's on you.

Don’t let the utility companies raise rates to cover maintenance, repairs, and hardening they should have done decades ago. Their executives collect 6-7 figure incomes already for doing nothing more than pushing papers around.

Center Point couldn’t do their jobs And it was not their fault Our Governor said that they were prepared for this situation But we haven’t seen any evidence of that No power No internet And people have had to throw away so much food You can’t even find any hotels for those with small children and most grocery stores are not open They don’t have much left in stock anymore No ice All around me people have trees on their houses and property Unless you have lived through anything like this you just don’t know We have been hearing for years about how they are working on making our power grid work better We keep hearing the same things But you can’t even tell that anything has changed for many years And now we are back to the blame game That’s about the only thing that stays the same I bet that Abbot doesn’t have to worry about any of the things that we all do I have no answers I can’t make this any better But someone else does have the power and money to make a difference

The Houston Metro area has exploded in the last 20-30 years. Centerpoint can no longer maintain a monopoly and provide basic maintenance and service anymore. Allow other companies into the market. HL&P used to send crews out every Spring and Summer to maintain lines and trim trees. Centerpoint has increasingly pushed services they should be performing onto the consumer and shirking their responsibilities. End the monopoly now!

Where was Abbott during the storm? Oh yeah over in Asia

I saw those people working on replacing a broken wooden post. Everything was done by machine. But they took a whole day to finish the job. And I saw that they spent most of their time staying in their trucks doing nothing. That was why it took such a long time to recover the power.

Wow governor Abbott is sure taking care of business eh? Maybe he should give his friends at the electric company more tax breaks.

Seabrook, Texas -- Out 5 Days Texas New Mexico Power Company owns the infrastructure here in Texas, not Gexa or your service provider.

Sounds like big government is kicking in. Let the markets sort this out. People can certainly choose other power providers based on performance criteria.

Yes, they can, but the problem is they all run on the same power lines owned by the big power providers

Still trying to figure out how the Mayor was not aware fire stations and essential services had no generators or backup if the lights go out. How exactly did he not have this info ahead of the storm? 🤔

😂 So Texas what's it like to be a failure ?
@MrJohnnyboyrebel
@MrJohnnyboyrebel Месяц назад
A thorough Root Cause Analysis is required here. What caused the greatest number of failures? Is there enough stockpiled equipment to cover the potential loss? Greater Houston is 8,778 square miles. Per square mile, what are the modes of failure? Are the repairs being made corrective or preventative? Are all new neighborhoods required to have underground utilities? As a retired Quality Manager, these are just a few of my questions.

That Saturday we lost power for about an hour and only had a little rain. Texas has overall electrical problems. What is the Governor going to do about that besides raising the rates?

It is hard to bury power lines in Houston because of ground water. Most of Houston is just a couple of feet above sea level.

I guarantee its double the number that they say. Seven days and no power to half a million people. Sky high electric bills running in 1970s power lines older than me!!!!
