I've lived in Houston all my life. It's not ugly. And it no dirtier than New York, LA, or Miami... Buts it's cheaper to live here. I pay 500$ in rent and I live 10mins from downtown. Good friggin luck visiting/living in a friendlier/diverse culture.

I've been to all the above cities you mentioned and Houston is cleaner than all of them. The main difference between those cities and Houston is the cost of living and job opportunities --- Houston beat them all by a long shot! I got pissed off visiting Miami several years ago when the seafood I bought with my family at a restaurant was rotten but was twice as expensive as the ones I typically bought in Houston! I kept telling everyone that you would never get that kind of lousy seafood in Houston, especially for that kind of money spent. It was especially shocking to me because for a city so close to the sea I expected Miami to have great seafood, but boy was I'm rudely surprised! I guess there is a reason why Houston is 5 times larger than Miami and so many people choose to live in Houston than just about any American city.

Born and raised in Houston in the 70s and 80s. Houston is so many things that outsiders don't understand. First, its a boomtown. It's THE city in the world to chase your dreams and try to make your fortune. It's a Texan city with a fierce sense of independence. But it's also the friendliest big city in the world. When my wife and I moved back there in 1993 all our surrounding neighbors in Sugar Land brought us food to welcome us to the neighborhood. Houston is pickup trucks and BMWs. It's freeways. It's totally Texas while being totally global. The rodeo is an annual event that schoolkids learn about and participate in and it consumes everyone's lives for a brief but unifying period. Houston is a celebrity mattress salesman and the shortest player in Major League Baseball. It's Hakeem Olajuwon from Nigeria. Houston's Vietnamese community is enormous and vibrant. The food, oh my lord, the food! From Tex-Mex to brisket to gulf seafood to Cajun. It boasts more Whataburgers than anywhere else in the Lone Star State. It's ZZ Top and Clint Black and Beyoncé and Chamillionaire. It's Space City. It's cracked sidewalks from shifting Texas gumbo soil. It's being a kid and running around in 97 degree heat with 97 percent humidity and not really realizing it's hot. It's the Astrodome and Judge Roy Hofheinz. Houston is luxurious live oak trees simply dripping with Spanish moss. It's bayous and mosquitos and hurricanes. It's the ship channel and Houston's beloved gulf-sister to the south, Galveston. It's Enron corruption and Dr. Michael DeBakey cancer-treatments. If you don't really, really know Houston you won't get it. But when you do...it's just the best place in the world.

The "Six in the City" taxi information is wrong. $6 taxi for *anywhere* in the 610 Loop? I knew it sounded too good. The $6 special is only for downtown area inside of I-45, I-10 and US 59. That's less than 1/10th the size of the 610 Loop.

Make a plan on what you want to see. Having a car is an absolute necessity. Unless you're planning an urban trip where all of the museums, World famous Texas Medical center is a "downtown" itself. Believe it or not but it is the most culturally diverse city in the country. Man I wished I had an open top double decker bus to take people on a tour of our friendly. I live downtown Houston and I am really close the the area known as "The Heights". Each individual area is a city within itself. We have a lot of festivals. I highly suggest that you find out when Houston has its International Festival IT IS AWESOME!!!!!! Oh and expect to get fat We have some kick ass restaurants and the average Houstonian eats out four times a week. Anyways. If there is something specific you want to know. I'm the person you need to speak to. I was born here and I have tried to move several times but I just cannot seem to leave. There is something about Houston that will always keep you here. People that leave always come back.

When we went past downtown I was in awe. I went from a city in NE Ohio that was going down to Houston. I was amazed. I moved to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. I moved here from Cleveland, OH in 1968. It was the smartest decision of my life. I've raised five native Texans here. Having been back to Cleveland recently, I am SO thankful for having had the great sense to make this move. Houston is my home, especially when you consider that, culturally, I'm a true Houstonian. We have the greatest people in the world, here. Our diversity happened the right way; not by government decree, but due to all the economic opportunity here. People came here from all over the world; we worked together, played together, and realized that we really like each other. Houston is the City of the Future, today.

Houston Texas is a huge major city that Texans call home. We were 4th populous city in the U.S, bigger city in square miles. Its majorly diverse and known as space city. People from out of state are moving here to Houston. So that means new high rises are being built and we hold the 5th spot for high rises. Population is growing tremendously by the day as of 2021. Again Houston has better Healthcare, food options, highways, Business and job opportunities, cheaper cost of living, and more fun places to choose from, even the biggest rodeo. Houston as of 2021 is passing Chicago and later on L.A, why because they don't have anymore land to build on. Literally can't grow anymore that includes New York. So for those Sorry cities like L.A, New York, and Chicago sorry is all I can say. If you wanna better life move to Houston. Its worth your money and life. So stop talkin how Houston is Terrible cause it is not. Who ever said Miami is better than Houston, is literally on it! Miami is just known for its coasts which I would dearly love to visit. Still H-town is the Texas city. Texas in general!

I am a native Houstonian of 40+ years. Some of the information was correct and some not. Houston is known for its barbecue and seafood. It offers quite a bit of international cuisine as is reflected by its residents. There are very few, if any, not for profit hospitals left in Houston . Changes in healthcare nationally have affected how the medical system in Houston functions. We are the leader in organ transplantation. The weather is more often humid year-round than not. During the 1960's and 70's, the highest average summer temperatures may have been 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The usual low during winter was in the 50's. Houston had high rise buildings downtown in the mid 1960's and you could access the the roof and view the city with the telescopes provided. I know this video is a little out of date, but the information could have been more accurate.

This video is filled with misinformation from the very start. This woman has no idea of the diversity that has been a feature of the Houston economy since the time of Jesse H Jones. 2 major airports, numerous railheads, 3 Interstate Highways, and more institutions of higher learning. She dwells on what she perceives as negatives but has failed to do any of the research that would have revealed the city’s resources that obviate those negatives. With all the knowledgeable natives that are available for interview, she relies upon a non-English speaker whose “knowledge” is dubious. She is such a lightweight.

There is still a lot of ignorance on the part of a lot of outsiders who have never set foot here who believe Houston is just this pow dunk uncultured town of hicks. When you start explaining or listing the facts about our medical center, theater district, fortune 500 companies, college system, etc., it's almost as if they refuse to believe that this can happen in the south. I really appreciated this well done video which I think was a fairly accurate depiction of what Houston is in the 2000's. Transportation sucks, traffic sucks, weather sucks, its a big concrete jungle..true, true, true, and true, but there is a wonderful diversity or people, culture, and food, plenty of room and space for family life, business and job opportunities, and this wealth of activity that you can find if of course, you have a car to get yourself there. There really is no such thing as a perfect city---you just can't have millions of people running around and nothing bad ever happens---but I hope this video will help either people better understand what Houston is all about or perhaps encourage them to live/work/visit here.

Don't get me wrong. I love Houston, but the opening remark about territory size compared to other cities is simply untrue. Metro NYC is far larger.

From the recent data that I have found, considering the four (4) largest cities in America, Houston, TX. currently has about 657 square miles (sq.mi.) of land area, Los Angeles, CA. has about 495 sq.mi. of land area, New York City, NY. has about 304 sq.mi. of land area, and Chicago, IL. has about 238 sq.mi.

Minute 13:00 That is pure Bullshit. I took a Cab for about 3 miles and it cost me $8.00 bucks plus the driver bitching for not keeping the $2.00 change as a tip. Well?, if he would of have a better attitude, I would of.

Houston is a splendid city which cannot be easily labeled. It is too different, too unique, with huge varieties of people from everywhere. Even has different ecosystems depending on which part of the metro area you live in. Jungle in the northeast suburbs, prairie in the western suburbs. Want easy to label cities go to Austin, SF, or Boston.

Entertaining reading some of the comments, If your not afraid to work, show up on time dress decent there are many jobs that will provide a decent living. Our city really needs Licensed service people. Of course there are plenty of tech jobs but everyone will need plumbing, a/c, appliance repair. Yes we have traffic bad traffic, so live close to your job, for so many years our city leaders didn't build highways keeping up with population. Massive construction is going on all over town but we are way behind. Think of Houston like this 3 rings around town, Highway 610 it's the inner city loop, then beltway 8 was sort of outskirts when it started being built now town has grown out to it, and now Grand Parkway our outer loop, city is quickly building out to it. We have several small city's that were swallowed up Bellaire, West University, South Houston, Clear Lake, Katy, Cypress, Spring, Klein and so on each with it's own personality. Housing is pretty cheap to purchase, rental rates are going up with 1,200 people a week moving here. This video is somewhat accurate but some liberties were taken on the typical southernisms.

Knowing Chris Hadfield speaks perfect English and hearing him dubbed over while he speaks French is entertaining. This video must have been originally made for a French audience.
