We call it "Soccer" because in Old English, "socc" means "a light shoe", in which players wore to play said sport. (From Latin soccus, from Greek sukkhos) I truthfully do not know where -er comes from. We call Football, football, because in order for the game to "officially" begin, a player has to kick the ball (with his FOOT) towards the other team's side of the field. Don't get your "knickers" in a twist because we named it differently.

+Subhan Gaming actually, the word "Soccer" came from the word "Football". The full name for Football was Association Football, and back then in some countries (pretty sure England) they would add -er to the end of words to shorten it. And so, association football became Soccer.

Soccer is actually short for Association Football. Back in England in the late 19th century there used to be a fad where people would take a short form of a word and just add er and the end of the word. Someone decided to do this with the word 'Association' because there are many types of football (American football is one of them) but association football is the type they play in FIFA. So the term football is very broad is actually does include many sports like association football and american football but the word soccer is very specific and talks solely about the international type of football.

I remember we got this at my school for Jump Rope For Heart. The more we raised money the more prizes we got. I got this yet I couldn't really play with it since the group wasn't smooth and my house is so tight I couldn't play with it. XD well 5 years from now I have a lot of space for it I just need to find it!

I have a version of this that doesn't require batteries, rolls over basically any terrain, bounces, and doesn't shatter upon high speed impact with a wall. It's called a soccer ball.
