Out of those 3, I would choose Aldi. Not because of the price, but the ingredients. I've heard the M&S one is nice, but that too contains the wretched palm oil and soya flour, so that's a no go. I buy Jacksons of Yorkshire (preferably with a yellow sticker), it's palm and soya free. Glad you're using proper butter again! I've seen someone put a dob on the slice of bread and then microwave it for a few seconds... Interesting review, Gaz!

Worth remembering that for the supermarkets (and Aldi, Lidl etc) bread can be a lost leader. Many will look at items like that and milk as key to where they shop, the supermarkets have loads more items with much more profit, the bakers etc have less leeway to do that

I am always partial to the Morrisons in-store bakery bread, particularly the Tiger and Seasalt and Black Pepper loafs as they're the only supermarket to make from scratch. Used to work at Asda and let me tell you, the look on the new store managers face who came from Morrisons when I told him that no, I couldn't bake off bread from scratch was priceless! I also like the tiger bloomer from Morrisons and Asda from the bought in range - that could be a good comparison to do as despite appearances being the same, the ingredients differ.

This week Tesco substituted our three Warburton's white Toastie loaves with Hovis wholemeal! what were they thinking? The texture of the Hovis is dreadful, really sticky. It's ok toasted, but really unpleasant in the mouth when used in a sandwich. We usually have one brown loaf, the Warburton's wholemeal is fine. Even the 80p Tesco brown wholemeal toastie is ok, but the Hovis is just sticky. My favourite at Tesco is their own brand seeded or multigrain loaves which sell for £1.

I buy the Tesco stockwell? wholemeal loaf at 39p. Seems fine to me, I actually really like it. I wouldn't pay double for the Aldi loaf or even more again for the branded options. As for the butter taste I feel the fresher and softer the bread the more likely it will break up trying to spread hard butter. I think its important to point out that the fresh bread from places like Aldi and Lidl and other smaller supermarkets are parbaked which is full of yeast and addictives. The pre-packed bread can actually be much healthier than the so called fresh bread. However bigger supermarkets like big Morrisons, Asda and Tesco's bake their own bread properly which is better and healthier. Parbaked bread still tastes nice but it goes off quickly and the high levels of yeast could effect some people who are yeast sensitive. The great thing about parbaked bread is you can often find it heavily reduced in price at the end of the day as it has a very short shelf life. My coop store does some big reductions on it like baguettes for 9p.

Try having to buy Gluten-free & Lactose-free products. They have us over-a-barrel & can charge what they like cos they know we haven’t a choice but to pay it. Aldi don’t stock gluten-free as far as I know so I have to pay Tesco prices……£2.80 for 1 pack of 2 Warburtons Thins, (4 slices), that’s if I want bread half decent enough to use for a sandwich. For toast for breakfast I have to pay the same for a small Warburtons brown or white loaf or Free-from is much the same price. The bread never tastes baked enough to me, but I can just bear it toasted with an egg or beans on it.

There was an old fashioned Hovis bakery just at the end of our street. They sold the nicest bread, all natural ingredients, no oils, or excess salt/sugar. Bread needs an overhaul in it's manufacturing, too many preservatives and it is not fresh by any means. But i must say Aldi's seeded low G.I is delicious with butter and marmalade. Each to their own as far as personal taste is concerned, otherwise there would only be one type of bread.

The price between the local baker's bread and supermarket bread is because the supermarket loaves are made using the Chorleywood process, which means they can use cheaper lower-protein grains for the flour, as well as the time difference and the obvious economy of scale. I do use the baker for a speciality bread now and again, such as foccacia or ciabatta, although these are now widely available in supermarkets as well, I do prefer them from the baker. For my daily bread, I usually just use wholemeal from Lidl, but the difference between the branded makes and the supermarket own breads in terms of taste/quality and price is fairly minimal these days, so I use a variety including Hovis and Warburtons, as well as the 'Village Bakery' brand. I tend to buy thick sliced, though, as I find the medium sliced a bit too thin. I occassionally get a tiger loaf from a supermarket with a baker as well, as it's great for doorstop sandwiches.

Hey BFG, it would be unfair to include Local Suppliers re; pricing, in fact it could even be slightly unfair with the supermarkets, as they have different price bandings for different areas of the country, but where do you draw the line and stop? When spreading butter, i find spreading from the bottom upwards (so turn your slice around 180*) doesnt seem to tear the slice quite as easy. :) Dont forget, these Huge Bakers with their own R&D dept’s have found out how to get the maximum amount of water in a loaf to get the weight with the smallest amount of ‘costly’ items in as possible. With the cost of Wheat Flour going up, it may well be a good idea to keep a weather eye on the ingredients, in case they start slipping in this locust/cricket flour, watch out for words such as locustis, or grillis.

Great review Gareth, we say it's 'Claggy' in Leicester when something is dry or chewy and hard to swallow. Co-op wholemeal is dark and a lovely flavour, it's only 75p at moment with your members card.

I always have Warburton's no added sugar. There are Aldi stores in Ireland.I lived there for 15 years.

My first choice wound be warburtons, as it’s got a lovely taste, followed by the Aldi. Nothing wrong with it and great value. However M&S do a wholemeal brown loaf at 80p which I would choose over any of these three any day!! It’s delicious.

All of them contain calcium propionate which is a mould inhibitor. Commercially produced bread needs to have a reasonable shelf life.

I don’t buy bread very often because I can’t eat a whole loaf before it goes off. I’m not keen on defrosted bread so I won’t freeze bread. Half loaves cost nearly as much as a full loaf. Aldi’s bread is what I buy when I do get some in just because it’s the cheapest around.

I love bread and eat it every day. I like all kinds of bread. Tesco oat & barley, Tesco sourdough rye, Lidl ancient grains, French baguettes, Polish bread, Pumpernickel (delicious with smoked salmon or prosciutto), and many others.

I have to admit I do buy fresh uncut bread from a local baker (lucky to have one), do have bread like this in freezer in emergency, but not a fan. My Dad used to love uncut brown bread said it was better after about 4 days+
