Dunno If I would go that far - and at the end of the day these projects are mainly about not having to spend even more to increase road and air capacity through some of the worst bottlenecks around the state, which is what would need to be done If there was no CAHSR.

Japan, build their high-speed rail starting in 1964 and now it’s over 1800 miles of rail. I wonder if Walt Disney really thought the monorail was the future

It doesn’t really matter whether it is the future or not. The fact is we have a vision of monorails looking really futuristic and the Disney parks take advantage of that despite the downs.

These 2 Projects would have served Metro area populations of 25 million people, instead of the 3-4million that will be served by the current staging, and would have won support for more funding to scale Up HSR for the expensive difficult connection through the Mountain passes. I vaguely remember that Union Pacific refused to give permission for the HSR to run on or near its track, meaning that the HSR to Gilroy would need to spend decades in litigation and billions of dollars to buy off Union Pacific. The rich people in the Peninsula also promised to send lawyers to delay things as much as possible. So the government decided to not start on the Northern California section of track since it would be tied up too long in lawsuits, and they wanted to spend the stimulus money as soon as possible to stimulate the economy. In any case, the current priority seems to be Bakersfield to San Jose, but through Modesto, completely bypassing Gilroy.
@kyletopfer7818
@kyletopfer7818 12 дней назад
@@my2iu thats not true, at least I havent seen anything of the sort; the line from San Jose to Gilroy is only single track but CAHSR are still planning to electrify and double track it, then run beyond Gilroy to a new alignment turning east to head inland. CAHSR will be able to bring the line through SJ to SF up to 110mph without removing the level crossings, whilst the section from SJ to Gilroy could potentially be faster with the LXs removed
@my2iu
@my2iu 12 дней назад
@@kyletopfer7818 Yes, the official plan is to go through Gilroy. But looking up the old news reports, Union Pacific objected to sharing its right of way with high speed rail back in 2008. I think maybe the CEO was Republican or something or was looking for a big payout, so he objected to sharing the right of way with HSR back then. And that took a few years to figure out. In any case, the final official planned route through Gilroy and the Pacheco pass ends up using way more tunneling and way more cost than expected. So the previous governor extended the HSR to Merced and funded an extension of the Ace train from San Jose to Merced, which makes the Gilroy-Pacheco Pass section a much lower priority now.

Ed Lee and his admin purposely delayed project because he wanted to help his mission bay developer cronies by attempting to swing the tunnel by the new arena. BTW, when this project was EIR cleared 10+ years ago, it was only 1.5-1.9 billion dollars. See what happens when you delay projects, they become more expensive and lor and behold, they're basically going with the EIR cleared alignment that was approved so many years ago lol.

I'm not really getting why they are so shy to build the tunnel through Pacheco Pass. Actually that's what CAHSR needs. The undergroud station in San Fransisco is nice to have, but if funding is limited then the current station will do for sure. Without a connection from SF to the Valley the whole project is simply a waste of money. And what is more eventually they have to come up with a plan how to get to Los Angeles. If they have no idea, they should team up with Brightline (what they should do anyway imho, because those guys know their sh... how to build on time and on budget) A high-speed line from Bakersfield to Madera only? That would be like building a subway for New York just on Staten Island and leave 8 million New Yorkes with horse carriages
@G-546
@G-546 19 дней назад
For some reason their seems to be an assumption with projects that construction should not start until all funds are secure. But it’s a terrible way to build as costs go up while waiting. I know with tunneling you can’t just stop halfway, but you can get funds to build an empty tunnel and wait to put the rails in later.
@ryanfoster5902
@ryanfoster5902 18 дней назад
Brightline west has the advantage of having their ROW already acquired in the center of the highway and they are not actually going to either downtowns if I am not mistaken. All this makes building the project multitudes easier. CAHSR is just a much more challenging project.
@OldSchool-px1xk
@OldSchool-px1xk 18 дней назад
@@ryanfoster5902 That's true. However, Brightline will build a line through Cahon Pass and that would be an excellent option for CAHSR to join in. Some day, they still can build the route through Santa Clarita. Brightline wants to terminate at Cucamonga; CAHSR could build the rest to LAUPT.

This is a two mile link. The estimate is it will cost $8 BILLION. At $4 billion per mile, it is the most expensive piece of track (in $ per mile) in world history. @lambertlum1087
@lambertlum1087 25 дней назад
@@fb39ca4 Actually, we are paying above the cost of gasoline. The government adds taxes onto the gasoline, knowing that people will blame gas companies and not government for increased price. California adds $1.43 to each gallon of gas, and currently legislation points to a future of $2.00 tax per gallon. As for gas subsidies, they are not subsidies; they are tax deductions and tax credits. As for road maintenance, gas tax is supposed to pay for road maintenance. So we already are paying for roads. Unfortunately, a large percentage of gas tax is diverted to projects unrelated to road, like mass transit or rail. This undermines the user-pay/user-benefit principle of a gas tax. If you drive, you should pay for your road, and not someone else's BART ticket.
@rjd1564
@rjd1564 23 дня назад
@@lambertlum1087that governments often shuffle around their finances is definitely an issue at times, but as someone who like usable roads you should be happy about that considering that the total tax revenue of all the gas taxes is about 53 Billion USD while the total road expenditure is at about 206 Billion USD. Meaning that the gas taxes alone wold never cover that. And the since as you said the Gas industry is predominantly aided in tax incentives it is hard to actually pin point how much revenue the governments are actually withholding from collecting but estimates range quite a bit between 10 - 50 billion. Not particularly the singns of a self sufficient mode of transport.
