I love how Joe Wright was able to convey so much with so little speaking. The cinematography in this movie is so breathtaking. The scene where Lizzie hides at the ball is one of my favorites.
matthew and keira did fabulous job in their subtle acting which remains expressive especially so with their eyes!!! their chemistry is so good, that amplified with joe wright genius directing, no 1 can beat 2005 adaptation ever.

My favourite tiny bit of the movie - I think this is probably more about Matthew MacFadyn's magnificent skill as an actor - is when Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth: "And are you having a pleasant trip?" It's a perfect juxtaposition of power and weakness. There he is standing on the terrace of his estate but can only say the weakest words.
That’s so true! I never thought of that. We always think of wealthy, well born people having supreme confidence and the ability to move among any circle they choose with ease. It’s so not true in Mr. Darcy’s case. He’s shy, and overcome by his attraction to Elizabeth. So sweet.
This!! There’s a line from this scene in the book that perfectly correlates with matthews delivery of that scene. It’s just after mr darcy and lizzy accidentally meet at Pemberley. ‘There had been that in his voice, which was not like ease. Whether he had felt more of pain or pleasure in seeing her, she could not tell-‘
She had confronted Darcy about his inability for small talk and that he needed to practice. He was digging deep to find something to say and came up with that question. He looks so pathetic when he’s trying to get that conversation going with Lizzie.
definitely my favorite scene it's when Darcy proposed for the first time in the rain; he insulting her for her low position in the sociaty and seeing this how "despite" Lizzy's condition, he loves her. Lizzy put him in his place for being such asshole, the thunder that sounds loudly when Darcy insulted the Bennets, the thunder sounds again when Lizzy insulted Darcy. I feel that this scene it's kinda the rain washing they hearts or they letting out (storming out basically) the feelings and thoughts about each other. And the Darcy's flex hand scene??! Goosebumps until today!
My favorite single shot too! That single shot on his hand flexing at just the TOUCH of her conveys so much about longing and repressed passion. It's beautiful.
Most dudes: there's no action and people barely speak but when they do it's all fancy and stuff. booooring THIS dude, based: look at how much is said in every shot without even needing words! women: this guy... he gets it.

It used to be you could get 30-50 days to shoot a movie even at this budget and you can really try things out but now you’ll be lucky to get 18 days to shoot an independent film and lucky to get more than 25 for a movie at this budget level.
I knew I loved this movie, but now I know WHY!!! My favorite part is Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth! Because she loves words, he knew his written words would speak more powerfully to her. And then she cries and just UGH the emotions are sooo alive!
@@MicahKhan I always felt that but now I know others feel the same! Thanks. The sets and the depiction the of the classes seems impeccable. Elizabeth's family, though privileged, still have a house in need of repair with mud outside and a bit dingy all around. The lifestyle of the day was so much closer to the earth / outside even for the upper / middle class. You don't see this in period films very often.
Just recently saw this film and was blown away by the beauty of it and how clever the story telling is through cinematography, I think it's a Masterpiece and the beauty of the filming, editing, lighting is amazing and then you have this beautiful soundtrack and to top it all the chemistry between Lizzy and Darcy is off the charts. - Fantastic Film.
It's literally impossible for me to choose a favorite scene. My dad and I love to watch this movie together, and I thought he was the only guy who like P&P, but you've proved me wrong! I think a scene that makes me warm and fuzzy inside(they all do) is when Lizzie meets Mr.Darcy's sister, and Mr.Darcy actually gives a full smile for the first time. He's laughing with Lizzie and interacting courteously with her aunt and uncle and I just get lost in the joy of seeing Mr. Darcy's growth and wonderful smile.
The moment Lizzie is running from Mr Collins' proposal. The shot of the geese running with their wings flared and Mrs Bennet's skirts flying as she chases Lizzie is perfect.
@@MicahKhan yeah I saw that in the extras. The long walk at the end too, tho it wasn't happenstance per se, but they had one chance to get it right as the sun was rising and the shot of the sun rising between them was a lucky chance. It was perfect.
Favorite part? "Forgive me, madam, for taking so much of your time." Powerful, urgent, devastating, filled with longing and disappointment on both characters. Second favorite part was when they meet outdoors near the end, and finally both admit their feelings for each other. Thank you for your perspective on how this film was made - kudos to Wright and company!
At Bingley's ball, when Lizzie and Charlotte are running off and the camera stops like it's hit a brick wall which turns out to be Darcy's chest. Then the camera pans up with Lizzie to show Darcy's face. Fun!
The cinematography of this movie was an obsession when it debuted in 2005. I still am. It’s still one of the most visually stunning films I’ve ever seen.
my two favorite scenes are when Darcy tells Elizabeth he loves her and they argue. There is that one moment where they almost kiss and it's so subtle but so beautiful. I know a lot of people complain about that moment but to me it's the natural extension of their passion as they are arguing. The long shot at the end when he is walking across the field is one of the most romantic scenes I've ever watched. In the DVD extras I remember that one of the female crew (maybe the script supervisor) was swooning over this scene. I've seen a number of versions of P&P (including Lost in Austen-and if you haven't seen that, you must) and I have to say this one is the best to date. Matthew McFayden is pure heaven. I know Colin Firth fans will jump on that, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
YES! I also feel like this soundtrack doesn’t get as much love as it should. It’s beautiful and iconic. And it elevates the entire cinematography. The opening shot of the sunrise plus the gentle swelling of the music leaves me breathless every time.
My favorite towards the end. Lizzy on the bridge at dawn. She catches a glimpse of Darcey walking towards her in the field. The loud sigh from her conveys passion, longing, love, relief…all this emotions that have build up through the movie are in that one sigh. Then Darcey, walking towards Lizzy. Shirt half way opened, hair disheveled as if saying take me as I am. Nothing to indicate who he is, riches or rank.

@@hanhkelley369 I think that making a good movie is extremely hard no matter what. I find that the best movies have one thing in common and it’s a director with a team working for a certain intention, which is usually give the audience the MOST and ENTERTAIN. Most directors I meet are really just there to call themselves directors for the ego trip. I don’t think all Hollywood movies are trash by any means and new directors are coming up who are really challenging the form and I just want people who are doing something different in the art form of filmmaking to be appreciated and possibly given some more work. Idk if that makes sense. Taika Waititi is a great example of someone who’s indie voice translated to a very fun studio movie.

I might be just a little bit difficult. The " Pride and Prejudice" 2005 adaption is a masterpiece in my opinion. But it seems to be underrated in the Hollywood movie community.
@@MicahKhan it's sad that most people nowadays dont have TASTE!!!! and i feel like the industry itself was repulsive to push for such masterpiece to gain more recognition, as they are more into quick money earning production rather than feeling determined to make a masterpiece that could last forever.
One of my favorite cinematography scenes is at the second ball after lizzy dances with mr. Collins, and her and Charlotte are walking away laughing together when they run into mr. Darcy, but the framing of the shot is at the girls' level so it only shows this black mass of his chest and shoulders, perfectly displaying how imposing he is, For him to then do the most unexpected thing and ask her to dance. her dumbfoundedness is perfectly acted in her response. Such a great scene.
Honestly, I think my favourite scene is probably the wander inside the Bennet’s house after Bingley proposes. There’s just so much warmth in the family in that scene. With Mr. and Mrs. Bennet talking HAPPILY together and Jane and Lizzie giggling as they go to bed. While it uses dialogues from the book, it uses them in such a natural and caring way that it makes the family seem so real and loving, which often the book doesn’t show.
The look on Darcy's face as he is walking through the dance scene and sees Lizzie for the first time...the fleeting change, the emotion..he is immediately lost..subtle but you know he is gobsmacked!!
My favorite scene is the long walk in the end, I just love how he is walking with his coat sort of blowing in the wind and the shirt is unbuttoned a quite a bit more than usual. What I interpreted from that is that he is finally opening up to her and has nothing to hide. I just love this movie!!!
My favorite scene is Lizzie on the swing, going around and around and how what she is looking at changes, like the seasons. Very romantic way of showing the passing of time. I love the piano song playing in the background.
My favorite part is when Lizzy is travelling in the carriage and we get the shot from her point of view of having her eyes closed against the sun. It's such a small moment, almost in direct visual opposition to the first shot you include in the video of Lizzy in the cliff- But to me they represent the same feeling, the introspection, the depth and tenderness of her unravelling emotions. Loved this video and your passion for this movie!
Everything in this movie comes together like a well-oiled machine: The script, the witty dialogue, the costumes, the takes, the scenery, I'm getting riled up just talking about this! One of my favorite movies that I never get tired of watching :)
love so many moments of this movie, but the scene in the rain where he tells her he loves her in spite of her family and her status, and she snaps back at him so fiercely, and then, just for a moment, you think they will kiss - swoon! one of the most romantic scenes ever filmed!
My favorite part is when Lizzie goes to bed with her sister and doesn’t tell her anything, only that she saw mr Darcy, and then she blows off the candle, while shedding one tiny tear. It’s so SO beautiful, how she hides what she feels. It’s perfect. I can’t believe this movie, it’s wonderful, my favorite movie ever.
I also like how during the course of the movie I grew to love Matthew McFayden. He was unknown to me at the time, and had to earn the regard. The scene where he is coaching Bingley on how to propose was the culmination , where you realize he is just superior ( but not arrogant) in intellect, manner , voice, everything.
I feel like in the spur of the moment given the sympathetic gaze and the very weak start of a smile there's a chance that they could have gone that way and had Mary be with Mr Collins instead of Charlotte but as we learn from Charlotte she was in a much worse situation than Mary as she says in her own words "I'm 27 years old I have no money and no prospects I'm already a burden to my parents... and I'm frightened"
This is one of my favorite movies. I think my dog and I watched it every night before bed for 3 years straight. Even now it always relaxes me and is also a favorite go-to. When Darcy is walking at the end and he is finally coming for Lizzie, for what is now his, I swear it feels as though it's me he's coming for. Love Joe Wright's films.
I used to teach film analysis using shots from this film. One of my favorite moments is still Collins' proposal, where the viewer (and Lizzie) are trapped in a scene that looks as though it should be visually parallel, but is just *off* thanks to Collins throwing off all the balance. It's so subtle, but so excellent. Thank you for this analysis!
The 2005 production is the best interpretation in film version also the music who is very beautiful and heartwarming.Apart of phrases and expressions who remain the same from previous editions throughtfull to that splendid artwork of Jane Austen. It is a pity they shorten the story regarding the book. Certainly it is nice to put it more in a psychological or prosaic version of vision (that film nearly always does) but I am sure that many people do not see or understand it fully. Ok I am 72 years old and have another view on things as the younger generations because we are born with books. Reading the book first is important to understand it better and connect with time, places and culture in those days. The 1995 edition was great also and it gave more insight on what Austen really wrote. For over 55 years I have all Austin's books and did read them numerous times over again. It is obvious that we all have our opinion. Saying this I do congratulate you with your short version of the most important things of it.
I’ve seen this movie so many times and only just twigged at Lizzie’s last words to Darcy referencing the saying ‘cold hands, warm heart’! Such a clever movie! 👌
Thank you for this. I’ve a,ways felt this movie was masterfully shot, with meaning and intent behind every technical decision, every musical cue, every camera move. Many people seem to prefer the miniseries version over this one. That for me would be like choosing absolute fidelity (and Colin Firth) over true artistry. The 2005 version is better - there is no debate.

I'll soon be 65. Of all my life, this is my favorite movie. I have watched Pride and Prejudice time and time again. I've read the book twice. I think what is so good about it, is that it fills the visual, audiotorary, if there is such a word ha!! I am visual artist and so it may just satisfy my artistic soul. It really is a timeless classic.
They would have been the best-matched pair. Both devotees of Fordyce’s sermons, both terminally serious, neither terribly comfortable socially. A romantic opportunity missed, but love did not factor into marriage as much as practicality did. I feel rather sad for Charlotte, encouraging Collins to keep to his garden, relishing her time in her private parlour , but she seemed content.
That scene..of her dress flowing n the rocks and the colors..just wonderful...if there was a poster of that..it would be on my wall..it’s lovely...and a very favorite movie!❤️🌻

This was absolutely fascinating, thank you! I have always appreciated how beautifully directed this film was. I love the scene right at the beginning where you get a long take all through the house; Mrs Bennet talking about Bingley, the maid singing, Mary on the piano, Lydia and Kitty frolicking around. You instantly get a feel for this family and how they live and it’s pure magic.
🐝 I love that sequence, too. It’s not often that a maid’s perspective is featured, however briefly, and it establishes that this is a film (and a family) with many layers.
I watch this movie over and over. I have lost count. Your short video here explains and highlights what I experience every time I watch it, but I never understood. Thanks for this video Micah. My favorite scene and sometimes I just rewind it over and over again, is him walking across the field and the sound of her breath or little gasp when she sees him. There are a few places where I wish we could have more. Like what did she say to him right after her father gave his consent? The jump between that scene with her father to them already being married makes me sad for some reason. Like we got cheated somehow. But it doesn't impact my viewing pleasure of watching it over and over and over. This is hands down, my absolute favorite movie, ever!
I love this version of pride and prejudice. Yes there are changes from the book, but most of those are summed up with a. shorter time frame to cover events and b. a need to adopt the novel for modern audiences who might not be able to understand the nuances of the story without being mega fans. Ie. making the bennet's a bit poorer then they actually are to further highlight the class differences between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth when in reality they were both considered upper class in our modern view of classes.
When I need a short "fix" of this, my favorite book, I'll play this movie. Yes, it doesn't have as much original language of the original 1995 version, but the essence is there and the beauty of production is breathtaking. I think Jane herself would be pleased.

omg when i watched p&p the first time my brain immediately made the connection that mary likes mr. Collins but i literally never was aware why i thought so. The entire film is a masterpiece, from beginning to end. Not a single wasted frame. I wish that they would do a Director's Cut for us, but maybe this is the Director's Cut.
You, dear sir, have urged me to watch this movie again (for the nth time!) and yet see it with fresh eyes. Your commentary has also inspired me to watch the 2020 version of Emma while taking note of blocking, facial expression, body language, and other visual cues as opposed to simply relying on the dialogue. I love your analysis. It is very enlightening for my appreciation of movies going forward. ❤️
My favorite part of the movie is ... the whole freakin movie - except the final kissing scene on the patio at night. The characters were so clearly delineated and played against each other perfectly.

I kept rewatching this movie. Yes, not the best Austen adaptation, but the footage was just magical. Then I realized, it's not Hollywood garbage. Makes a huge difference. Not so tainted by Hollywood shit or Marvel trash.
One scene I enjoy is when Elizabeth is dancing with Mr. Collins. He is trying to talk to her, but Jane is also trying to talk to her, plus they are all dancing making it hard to converse, so Mr. Collins gets very frustrated. So, when they come to a point in the dance where they are just supposed to stand across from each other, he steps forward into the open space between them to talk to her. He's not supposed to be doing that, of course, and Elizabeth looks to her right (at Jane), and she looks almost panic-stricken, as though she were asking: "WHAT IS HE DOING?"
The interesting thing about 2005 P&P was the hands of Mr Darcy and him coming in contact with Lizzie. But before P&P was 2004 North and South with Mr Thornton (Richard Armitage) and Margaret Hale (Daniela Derby-Ashe). Again the hand contact was a great part of this romantic viewing.Then the final kiss in both. N&S was better in the final scene at the train station, my preference, but 2005 P&P is incredibly delicious too! Both are wonderful films. If you haven’t seen North and South, well it’s worth the viewing! I got it on DVD. Also have P&P on dvd too.

I love this video...thank you. I would love to hear your take on Darcy’s “hand” zooms (helping Elizabeth into the carriage, and the scene when she runs away at Pemberly). Those shots say a lot and I’ve heard them described differently by a few others.
You asked what was my favorite part? ALL OF IT! I've seen all the versions of P&P, I have all of Austen's books. When I heard people panning the 2005 P&P of course I had to watch it. WOW....wow. I was drawn in from the opening shot. I have watched this movie a million times since it's release and it gets better each time. I love this movie so much that I have watched the director's commentary while watching the film. I highly recommend lovers of this version to please take to the time to listen to Joe's very thoughtful words about each scene. There is only one thing I disagreed with Joe regarding a key scene. The shot is of Dame Judy Dench and this is the scene where Lady Catherine de Bourgh visits Elizabeth in the middle of the night demanding that Elizabeth should promise not to marry her nephew Darcy. He felt the framing with her and candle too harsh on Dame Judy. But I love it. It shows the harshness of the moment. She didn't care that she stormed inside Elizabeth's family's home in the middle of the night. She didn't care that she had not been introduced to her family because of course she is their "better" in society. It shows her as the ugly, shallow, prejudiced, upper crust woman that she is and so even though Joe didn't like that particular shot, I loved the it for other reasons. That darkness became an extension of her character. He also talks about that very famous scene with Darcy walking through the fields. I won't say what Joe says in that scene, but once you watch with his comments it makes that scene even more magical and swoon worthy.

The quality of this video is 100/10. I love the use of landscapes, especially for changing the pace. They come into hand when big revelations or big events have taken place. It buys the audience some seconds to let things sink in and it gives it such an interesting take
yesterday i've finally watched pride and prejudice for the first time and I'm hooked now. The story in my opinion is rather simple but the way the movie conveyed the emotion, the character's minds and feeling is soo expressive. And thank you sir for the video, now i know why its soo good :")

Yes, I also love that he mentioned it as well. Isn't it funny how when the novel was written, she was supposed to be the least favorite of the Bennett sisters, but now, she is considered almost as popular as Lizzie? Show just how much the culture has changed.

I always felt that it was the equivalent to a heart palpitation 😂 you know that weird feeling you get when you see the person you like and you get really excited? She wasn’t expecting to see him and she wasn’t either so it’s a bit jarring for both of them

I always thought that the use of the zoom at that point just illustrated beautifully the mortification Lizzie felt when she realized they caught her intruding on a private family moment.
I heard someone say that the zoom when Mr. Darcy comes into the room to propose is similar to the zooms they do in several scenes of The Office. Good thing you've made this video so I can think about something else when I watch that scene. This is one of my favourite films. I would happily watch longer versions of your analysis.
