This is so strange to me. The workers at the salons I went to growing up _always_ put a towel under my neck when washing my hair. No need to ask, they did it every time. I'm surprised that it's not a common practice.

Same. I have a tube in my neck going from the brain to the abdomen, and it’s very noticeable. The stylist is always careful around my head and neck. But then feeling the bump of the shunt under the skin like some alien lesion for the first time is always priceless. Lucky for me, my body adapted and didn’t need the tube anymore past childhood, but it’s too risky to take it out, so I’ve had multiple painful breaks in it, and I have more flexibility in my neck now.

I think it's careless for that doctor to say it's nothing to worry about. As someone who's worked in warehouses and other labour intensive workplaces, I've never seen someone being crushed by a heavy load, skewered by a forklift, or had their eye taken out by flying debris. However, we wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow strict operating procedures, in order to protect myself and others in the unlikely case of such an event occurring. So if people are aware that certain injuries are being caused by a specific action, and know how to correct it, I see that as gross negligent behaviour.

Sure, that's fair, but the proper precaution for this would to be to never use your neck again. No stretching it even looking to the side. However these motions are made billions of times an hour and the issue only happens a handful of times a year. That's like a 10x0.1^-29 probability. So I agree with the doc. It's less likely than Dream's speedruns.

the thing is, its as rare as a weeb finding a girlfriend in a sea of gacha gamers. Its well known, but so rare that you can easily neglect it entirely or prevent too much stress on the neck area for prolonged periods of time. Or in an idiot's terms: "The solution and prevention is so simple that the act of Self Pleasuring would be considered a difficult task with those without ED". Or in other words, "Its so rare that you mostly will not be concerned for it"

I know I'm very late but as a licensed hairstylists: 1. NEVER be ashamed to ask for accomodations like washing your hair a different way, sitting a certain way, or literally anything. We are there to give you a great haircut and best possible experience in our salon and if the stylists are not doing that find a new salon because SOMEONE WILL! 2. Towels should always be put under the neck at the wash bowl, not only for padding to the neck, but to keep the clients clothes and cape dry because accidents happen and the people using the hair bowls aren't normally designing them so they can have weird gaps or not fit right against the client. This is the end of my rant thank you for reading.

As a Stylist of 16 years I do have to say that the chances of this are positively minuscule to the point that this is alarmist. The only reason this would happen would be if someone had a pre existing arterial occlusion or some kind of thrombosis of one of the arteries in the neck. Many states including NY where I reside “technically require” a clients hair to be washed in salon for sanitation reason. (Although many salons do not enforce this rule understandably)

I don't know if I'd say it's strictly alarmist- it serves the purpose of bringing awareness of the fact that there are conditions that one should be aware of in regards to having their hair washed at a salon. If people don't know that it can happen, there's no way for them to know if they are at risk of the problem. I think calling it alarmist also ignores the fact that they go out of their way to emphasize that it is *extremely* unlikely, and can occur in everyday activities as well. This really just brings awareness to people to be aware that, if they have these symptoms after extending their neck at a salon, they should err on the side of caution and receive urgent medical care.

Brew, I don't know how to articulate this. I love your videos, this one included. I want to talk about a weakness of mine; when I listen to medical stuff, I kind of shut down rational and dramatically empathize such that listening to experiences that I've never even had, they feel real to me. It is a mixture of imagining it happening to me, and a heavy dose of existential dread that instead of a fellow human, that could be me or someone I know. It sounds commonplace and benign, but I simply can not put words to how immensely I feel this. Jut thought I would open up, and kind of put feelers out to see if there are others like me in this regard. Suffice it to say, I hated shows like House. Funny thing is, if medical trauma happens to someone, I have no hesitation to helping them, even if it is gory, I kind of just do my best at what needs to be done, it is only listening to it that triggers my reaction.

Meanwhile, what had been a very small fluid-filled cyst in my brain, had been growing big also, so when my Dr. replaced the left shunt mechanism, he also put in the new shunt in the right brain. I had a large lower left brain tumor that was discovered when it began hemorrhaging at nine months of pregnancy. I used to know a guy (he moved) who was born with water on the brain, at least that's what he said. Hydrocephalous I think it's called. I have hypermobility in my spine so this is extremely weird to me. I can push my head completely back onto my shoulders with no pain and I've had my hair washed plenty of times at a hair salon without any towel under my neck. At worst it's always been uncomfortable. Guess my loose joints aren't such a bad thing.
@mildlymarvelous

Hypermobility gang (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)! I was actually thinking that this might actually make it MORE dangerous for me to be in this situation, since my joints can stretch further than my other tissues, like arteries, are designed to. I also run a higher risk of dislocating a vertebra or slipping a disk, both of which would be excruciatingly painful. Please, PLEASE think of the risks of hypermobility instead of just the benefits.

I love getting my hair washed at salons though. It's the only time my hair is thoroughly clean because I just couldn't be patient enough to do it myself everytime. I think one should just be aware of their own neck stretch limit. If the angle is uncomfortable already, then do push it. I never have troubles with it. I'd just cover my eyes so I don't need to have to stretch my neck as much. Also, there's cushion on the portable sink so it can accomodate individual shapes more.

Honestly this just shows why we should never overlook pain especially any unexplained pain. While yes our bodies do sometimes protest issues we really cannot stop pain is our own body protesting "You are injuring me please stop". Generally this is best headed as you know our mind runs on the brain our body provides so injuring our own body generally wont end well for any of us.

@@joletty1793 Chiropractors are not medical doctors even if they have a Doctorate of chiropractic degree. Depending upon where they got it from its at best is the equivalent of a masters degree from an accredited college or university and at worst it’s a fly by night bachelors degree. Doctors of osteopathic medicine are considered medical doctors and they are licensed physicians in the us.
@Loserstakethebait
@Loserstakethebait 2 года назад
Not trying to defend chiropractors, but a lot of what you said is wrong. To get certified it almost always requires 8 years of schooling, at least in Iowa. Which is roughly equivalent to a medical doctor. They even take many of the same tests. Many chiropractors actually take more anatomy focused classes than your average doctor. Overall, I think chiropractic care is a short term solution to anything. It just allows for temporary relief and doesn't do 90% of the things many chiropractors claim, but they do generally have about the same level of schooling as a doctor. Furthermore, an Osteopath is equally as sketchy as a chiropractor. The character of the individual is what matters, licensed doctors worldwide are one of the leading causes of deaths due to malpractice and avoidable mistakes.

Always avoid washing your hair in a salon that only has basic basin+seat without neck support to wash hair. The comfortable chair-wash basin combo always has neck support, and there won't be problems because you're reclining in a very relaxing way that there won't be pain at all even if you're sitting for one hour or more.

OKAY. WELL. now I'm even more paranoid about my neck. I've already got chronic neck pain and the doctor was like "please stop cracking your neck you're endangering your life every time" so I've managed to do it much less often but. oh man. I like getting my hair washed at the hairdressers (plus, my hair is so thick and curly it just turns into something completely different when it's wet vs. dry, and you cannot brush/comb it dry). they always put a towel beneath my neck... it has occasionally felt strained but not too bad??? and now I find out it can affect you A WEEK LATER? ugh great I'm terrified

Very good information. As to how to better protect yourself and others from dangerous situations. NEVER allow your neck to be hyperextend. This was reinforced in massage therapy school. So, this is one more basic activity to be aware of when giving or receiving a massage.

Heh, I'm 23 and this is the first time hearing about this. All my life, whenever I went to whatever hair salon, I always felt comfortable when I was getting my hair washed and they always put a towel around your neck here. I did a quick search on how the wash chair looks elsewhere, ex. in USA, and I can see how they could be uncomfortable. Here wash chairs almost look like sofa chairs.
