Nowadays they could just release a few hundred thousand small sensors - a tiny battery, GPS module and antenna - with a few relay stations and map most of the ocean directly. Yeah, a lot of stuff floating around - so? with a sender+GPS it isn't that hard to find them and pick em up again. Sure it is a big upfront investment - but i think government, research facilities and specially cargoship companies would be more than willing to pay for that to get the data. Knowing the ocean currents can drastically reduce the cost for large shipping companies while reducing shipment times.
@TriStAn-zi5gc
@TriStAn-zi5gc 6 лет назад
ABaumstumpf who is paying again?
@user-vh7hu4lk2k
@user-vh7hu4lk2k 6 лет назад
If relay stations across the ocean and all other stuff can be set up as easy as you conceived, that MH370 plane won't be lost in the first place. GPS devices can only receive data from satellites, not sending. Antennas and relay stations just don't work that way. A satellite sender will cost way more than rubber ducks (just check out satellite phones on ebay), even we can't have all airplanes equipped with instant satellite senders. Great idea, but it just doesn't work. Btw, we can already predict currents quite well, so we wouldn't need that either.
@Kriae
@Kriae 6 лет назад
What if animals die because they tried to eat the sensors ?
@ABaumstumpf
@ABaumstumpf 6 лет назад
Udocard qaywsx - as i said, research facilities and cargo companies would certainly be interested. 闫恩铭 - they ARE that easy nowadays. You do not need a lot of bandwidth as even just hourly transmissions would be enough. GPS positioning is cheap - do not mix it up with GPS communication where there has to be an active connection. Nowadays you can get GPS modules for under 10€ a piece, add to that a small dedicated chip, a solar cell and a transmitter and with high production volume needed you end up with maybe 10€ for one finished sensor. now add to that a few relay stations that pick up the slow position data to send it back to a main station and you have your self a system. LoRa and similar provide methods to send data over several hundred kilometers - we do not need high bandwidth, just the range, and even with small solar cells we got more than enough power for that. Even covering something as large as the Atlantic wouldn't be that hard to do. You might need 100 000 sensors, with deployment and everything else considered it certainly will cost more than few millions - but on the other hand that would be enough to accurately measure all currents of an ocean at once. You could also do it with fewer and just measure parts of it at once and use them over a longer period of time. btw - this is nothing new. You can see something similar being used on many mountains to measure seismic activity, rainfall, daylight, or if the hill is moving/slipping. what i am suggestion is just scaling it up a bit. For ocean currents you don't need that tight measurements but you have longer distances. I have experience with those systems, i know people that worked on the design of such systems, even somebody that worked on a radar-software to track passive flying minisensors that can be dropped into hurricanes to measure them. there are already many fields that do similar things - i am merely suggesting to change the approach to measure the oceans.
