Block 36 is a ton of fun! Glad 2b2t is getting to finally enjoy it. The ender crystal, fire, piston method was actually invented by a friend and myself several years ago. The properties of block do change in newer versions.

to clarify, this block actually exists in the code, its not a bug and it was intentionally made as a temp in the code to make pistons work, the id of the block is minecraft:moving_piston, the only bug here is how you can obtain one in survival, which of course its not supposed to happen, it has the properties of a non-full block and cannot be waterlogged in 1.13+ which basically makes the block act like barrier in some cases

The name of this "Block 36" it's actually "Moving Piston", and they just appear to a fraction of a second when you extends the piston, the animation of extension and retraction from the piston happens on it, but it can't be mined. On the older minecraft versions it was called "minecraft:piston_extension"

So basically the title should be: "Schrödinger's Piston head"

I can just imagine someone using an exploit to fill the entire spawn with block 36

This block is called “pistonarmcollision” and you can place it without glitches by using the command “/setblock ~ ~ ~ pistonarmcollision” but doing it this way changes it’s properties slightly depending on the version

I think I vaguely remember this being mentioned in one of Docm77's Hermitcraft videos a year ago about The Button. If you're a Hermitcraft fan you'll know what The Button is. Basically Doc mentioned that he could cover the button in Block 36 and nobody could touch it but that wouldn't be fun.

This could be used to get a player to respawn in air, and fall to their deaths repeatedly.

Did you know block 36 is actually called “moving piston”? You can place one with commands! Mobs don’t know how to go through them either

Fun fact: You can /setblock it in 1.16.4 /setblock ~ ~ ~ moving_piston, that’s why you can get it from piston heads.

havent seen many floating piston head glitches in a long time. back in the old beta days we had 4-headed pistons and double-headed pistons an dfloating piston heads here and there as an interesting feature, it was almost a staple of redstone test worlds to have them near spawn for when you shared your world and showed off designs and inventions. I didn't realize there was still a reliable way to make them. Nifty.

Once you said it was related to pistons, I think I do remember this actually, I think people used it at one point for right click mechanics in command block creations in maps

Interesting. There are invisible piston heads in Minetest as well, not to mention other two-node objects like top-of-a-door or top-of-armor-stand. In Minetest, you can also detach beacon beam segments and force field chunks if you have the equipment for it.

minecraft java edition has a lot of these types of glitches around small ponds or lakes where grass will float untill updated and sometimes a water source block block will float in the air which is interesting, this glitched block reminded me of it

Imagine making a moat at spawn and covering the entire area in these blocks New Players would be stuck since they cannot build to get past the moat.

Imagine the stealth capability for faction groups’ outposts, or even bases. A whole base can be covered in this stuff making it completely invisible to players and wouldn’t be detectable unless you somehow had a hack. It makes the base harder to find which provides more time to build up resources since raiders are not much of an issue which means more time for expansion and conquest which means more time for a potential superpower faction to develop and take over the entire server with its might. Sound intimidating? It does to me.

The way this works is by making room for the piston to move (here by exploding the unpushable block) at the same tick in which the piston is destroyed, so what stays is the moving piston which was actually meant to be temporary.
