Came up on my recommended list, and wow super jealous you got to attend a workshop with kelogsloops. He is by far my favorite watercolor artist ever! Watching you go through the workshop did make me reflect on my own art process and where I am at with my watercolor journey. Thank you so much for recording this and best of luck on your own art journey!

Hi Tina!! I'm a mixed media artist and watercolor is truly a whole other beast if you're not used to using it. From watching this video, I think this workshop gave you some really great basics, but I did see a few things I think will really help you in the future that I didn't notice were addressed (and please forgive me if they were and I'm beating a dead horse). ONE, and i think this will really help, is that I would really suggest laying down a light wash of a base color to ground your painting, or the skin tones if you're doing portraits, and unify the color scheme. It will also give your paper a wonderful base to do wet-on-wet blending if you're working in that manner, and it does look like Hieu does that a lot particularly for his skin. Second, it looks like Hieu is using a much harder pencil - maybe a 4h. This will help a lot with getting those delicate lines and particularly with keeping the graphite from overwhelming or muddying your watercolor. You can also go back in and erase the linework a bit before you start painting, and then darken it up when you're done. I always recommend starting with a more saturated/"pure" tone and then go in with secondaries that will give you your hues and tones in nuance in your later layers. (I'm not sure if Hieu used masking fluid but that's often used for preserving highlights and white spots too. ) Thank you for posting this video - I've been wanting to start documenting my own work more and this really inspired me. I hope some of these tips help you continuing to pursue watercolor. And don't be afraid to mix in gouache - it's honestly the same paint, just with white pigment added! Good luck creating.

Oh wow, thank you SO much for leaving such a detailed and thoughtful comment! I always appreciate pointers and sharing from others who are experienced in the craft, there's really no better way to learn as a community 🥰 this is all super helpful and I'll be sure to revisit it when I get into watercolour (and maybe gouache) in my own time!

i am SO GLAD this came up on my recommended, i've been suffering artblock also!! and it sucks!! and i've always admired kelogsloops' work, and even just seeing clips of his process was enough to help me rediscover my passion for watercolour art, which i've been too scared to go back to. i also love your editing, so happy i've found your channel and thank u for posting this video :))

"not perfect but not bad" - that hit really hard 😆 I love that purple portrait! And I loved hearing your thoughts about this amazing experience. Keloogsloops is such a great artist... those sketchbooks!! Your harsh self-evaluation of having had no "good ideas" or not being creative... hearing someone else saying these kind of things about themselves also really resonated, because your art and your narration showed the exact opposite. 💜 Your portraits are beautiful and I'm excited to see more!

Oh my gosh, this video made me miss being around other artists! Especially a good workshop or art class. This video reminded me of the joys. I, too, often made backup sketches for watercolor paintings in my classes to calm my anxiety, lmao. Also I totally get that "icky" feeling about trying to get better at something, but still being in the process where the results are just... awkward? And it's so frustrating! But I feel like we gotta rewire our brains to think about "unsuccessful" art positively nevertheless. But when you're "in" it, in the throes of a painting and failing, it's so hard to work through the emotional turmoil sometimes. And you feel totally alone in it, too. Even though we're clearly not. And everything you talked about towards the end hit so hard. When you want to pursue art professionally, you can get so result-oriented, and forget why you even like art, it's only about producing something "good enough" to earn you something. Seeing you have such a profound realization about rediscovering fun and exploration during this workshop was a joy to see! Glad this video popped up in my recommended.

Ahhh it's so mind blowing to hear someone relating to the *exact* experiences I had hahaha, and yes I agree I know I'm not alone but it can definitely still feel that way with small things! Thank you so much for leaving such a thoughtful comment Mae!

Been wanting to join one of his previous art workshops in Munich, but they were always at the wrong time. I hope I will get the chance one day, but I greatly enjoyed your vlog about his art workshop. Your insights about yourself and about your art feel very relatable to me. Thank you for this video and well done on your paintings!
