Half of the world's cork wine stoppers come from Portugal's cork oak trees. These trees are so important to the country's ecosystem and economy, they're protected under Portuguese law. We went inside the forests of Alentejo to see how the cork bark is carefully harvested every nine years so it doesn't hurt the trees. This footage was filmed in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After 30 years, the cork trees I planted at my home from acorns finally gave me little acorns of their own. I never thought I would get to see it, that I'd be gone before it did. If I plant these, then I probably won't get to see the grand kids! Brought a tear to my eye though, my babies are all grown up now...

I went on a guided tour of the Portuguese countryside in early 2020 and the guide gave a one hour talk on the cork oak trees, its uses and how proud the country is of the industry.

Cork scraps can also be mixed with a silicon and formed into material for making water proof boots, wallets, flooring, etc. It's really neat.

Rubber comes from trees too and if there's ever a blight for those trees it would crash the global economy because rubber is so important to us, for example tires. Without rubber, cars, trucks, and planes would be useless until we find a suitable alternative. Synthetic rubber can't currently sustain the heat tires can get to.

You can also do some research and check if your city has specialized facilities to recycle/re-use wine corkscrew! They are not recyclable in traditional recycling facilities and if you put them in the trash after one use..well, it's not very sustainable.

Curious and beautiful facts about this industry and these trees (Quercus Sauber): - The trees that are peeled for cork, actualy tend to live much longer and stronger than the non-peeled ones. This is because removing the old dead bark every 9 years helps the tree to regenerate a better and stronger bark, therefore keeping the tree more healthy. Its a simbiose industry. - The first cork peeling of a tree is only made after the first 15 years of its life. Then, its repeated every 9 years. - Quality of cork bark improves with age (number of peelings in life). Basically, the older the tree, the better quality of the cork. This also shows how this industry helps the tree being more healthy. - In Portugal, these trees are called Sobreiro. Its the National tree by definition. They are protected by law and chopping down one of these trees can get you in real trouble.

If you enjoy fishing, store your hooks in old wine corks. The corks will keep you from being hurt by the hooks and they also float in case your tackle box falls in the water.

Read that some farmers we're switching to plastic cork stoppers which was a problem for cork tree farmers. Cork trees do not catch fire as fast & are beneficial to delay forest fires from spreading...they are biodegradable thus environmentally-friendly....good to know they're still being made.

Except cork is actually worth something. Raw wool is worthless. In my region it doesn't even pay for the gas it takes to take a load of wool to the buyer. So I raise hair sheep.

@@Sk1tz092 I sell cuts of lamb and mutton, and sell breeding quality animals to other farmers. I recently mailed my first batch of sheep skins to a tannery. When my flock sheds it falls on the pasture and only the birds make use of it for nests.

I've got a neighbor who makes homemade wine, and I've always been curious about the corks in the bottles, cool to see that they don't have to kill the tree to harvest the bark and they can just rotate around fields every so often to get more, more methods of farming like this need to be experimented with to save nature while also cultivating it and making use of what it can provide without killing it

Never throw out your real cork stoppers.... You can use them for sharpening those throw-away razors that you use for shaving! ⏩Just run the blade thru the cork and "voila!" you've got a brand-new razor again! And that cork will last well over a year doing this!⏪ Hope this helps! GOD BLESS 🌿💕🌿

We have 6 cork oak trees on a property in Colorado our elevation is perfect for the tree. We make our own grapes and bottle our wine with homemade cork and MMJ Farm as well.

Hey. Most trees die from it. Regular Beech trees can die from a thin cut all the way around the trunk. Cork is just different

I worked in California at a place that imported corks. My job was "dedusting". Take a hundred pound bag of corks put them in a giant tumbler and vacuum vast amounts of dust. Really just a very fine sawdust. I was told the dust could act like gun powder if compressed suddenly. Every few years cork ware house explodes in Portugal. Next the corks were printed. Then we had larger dryers where a fine wax was sprayed on them before packaging.

Great to see a video where they are protecting the trees! I save my corks & use them in decorations sometimes. I put them in a pretty bowl and add a candle 🕯 I’ve done another cork DIY. You can make a board with it lol.

The elementary school I attended had a cork oak tree. As far as I know, it was never harvested. We always loved that tree, and thought it was special.

When I was little (note: I live in Portugal) our class went to one of these cork "farms" (there was a part that had a very loud noise for my 9yr old ears) and everyone in my class got a cork square as a souvenir (I probably lost it somewhere ;( )

Says in the vid they usually wait 33 years in actuality, because the bark isn't as good in smaller younger trees. Harvesting young trees will slow the growth of the trees, where as harvesting an old tree that already puts it's energy into sustaining it's self makes more sense. An older tree also has a bigger root system so I would bet they regenerate better. So basically there's alteady incentive to harvest older trees, the limit is just to stop from stressing young trees during their years of fast growth.
