There are reportedly more than 5,000 villages across Vietnam working on traditional crafts like incense sticks and fishing baskets. Some are part of a government program that has generated about $1 billion a year in exports. We traveled across Vietnam to see how these traditional products are made.

Our exports now touch 600+ BILIONs But still we import more than this lol ! Like 192 BILION $ more what we earn So 192 BILION $ trade deficit is so much ! To kill our currency value ! I'd love to visit Vietnam again! About a decade ago I got a cheap ticket to Bangkok andwent directly to Vietnam and traveled from north to south over a few weeks stopping in various places. Fantastic country ans culture, and so easy to travel by train with the locals and see the beautiful landscape pass by. (They even have a whole kitchen car where they make hearty meals offered on trolleys!) Socialism has quite clearly meant everything to preserve the culture and create effective infrastructure and prohects like these featured. It's either that or have the entire country ruined by outsources industry, thank god Vietnam made better choices! I saw SO much beauty and met lots of great people everywhere, the only improvement I really hope for is the motorbikes being replaced with electric ones, the transition from bicycles to moto has made the city streets so smogged I lost my voice in only 7 days. I hope the Vietnamese government will take the problem seriously and help find a solution to transition to non fossil fuelled local transportation. Vietnamese cuisine is one of the best in the world! Beautiful hard working people of a unique culture, if you haven't been there you MUST go! Who knows what the future holds. I only wish I could gave experienced it when the streets where quiet, the air clean in cities and everyone bicycled...

As an interdisciplinary-cultural artisan I always find it amazing that "younger generations" don't want to learn/maintain traditional cultural creative forms. Yet they all eventually want to instantly learn artistic skills on RU-vid then call/consider themselves experts. Yeah right... In my youth and even as an Eldress I'd luv to stand at these artisans' elbows to learn a fraction of what they know.
@huyentrannguyen7348
@huyentrannguyen7348 Год назад
It‘s not that they don‘t want to learn; the main problem is that these jobs are considered to be „low skill“ even amongst Vietnamese so the payment is very low. Sure, there‘s lots of young people who don‘t actually want to learn but the biggest factor is the time-wage difference of these jobs. Even with the dong tao chickens, you have to invest time, resources and make a name for yourself before you start to make money.
@joonkorre
@joonkorre Год назад
It's not necessarily disrespect, it's more like you need a lot of passion for traditional craft to keep doing them despite not really getting financial rewards out of it, especially when the cost of living is higher now like it is everywhere else. The parchment paper industry in the west is the same as well. It's an honorable craft, but it's only for a niche set of buyers and the production process is more laborious than normal paper. Unless there's a huge unanimous movement for preserving traditional crafts, even older folks wouldn't care much, let alone young people.
@angustheterrible3149
@angustheterrible3149 Год назад
It isn't that young people don't want to learn, it's that we are actively discouraged by our parents from doing so. They would rather push us to become doctors or work in technical professions. Even if you are creative, parents push you to seek education in a job you may not even want. You don't understand. You don't get to choose and must respect your family in Vietnam, it's not like America where you get a choice and can go against your families wishes. Most village kids don't have the luxury of youtube either :/

In Japan artist crafters like these are designated as Living Masters. They are supported by the government and have apprentise programs. It's sad to see that these artists are left to the ravages o Capitalism. There is continuing need for their products & services. They are not just hangers on from the past whose work is quaint and no longer in the mainstream. And I want to acknowledge the very good work by the videograher and video editor on the inscense segment that runs from 1:08 to 7:17. The solid creativity exhibited by the videographer is maintained by the editor's smooth shot integrety, i.e. the fluidity of the camera movements is utililized to tell the story. A sub par editor would have just grabbed shots making a choppy visual junk pile. I'm sure this high quality is their everyday product. Thanks for the treat. I hope Business Insider can help the included artists connect with officials in Vietnam and global groups to protect them and them thrive.

No one is talking about how colonization destroyed many cultural practices like this around the world. Vietnam is beautiful for preserving their traditions while making a living. ❤

I remember learning how to make paper when i was in 4th grade. It was a very cool process

This is just a small detail, but in the "Dó" paper's section, the narrator says "giấy dó paper". "Giấy" is paper in Vietnamese, so technically they said "paper dó paper" XD. You can say it with just "dó paper" or "giấy dó". The closest you can pronounce "giấy" in english is "zay" with "ay" in "day".

I love these videos, they are so interesting. I hope the younger generation step up and keep these traditions going. Most people in America lack culture, the only thing we pass on is faulty genes and drug addictions.
