How a 21-year-old Green Beret saved scores of soldiers in Vietnam

The story of Capt. William Albracht's actions in 1969 is the stuff of Hollywood movies. A remote outpost, surrounded by thousands of enemy soldiers and manned by inexperienced troops -- and how a young Green Beret stepped in and kept them from being slaughtered. Then, a daring nighttime escape. It was the kind of valor that some now say is worthy of a Medal of Honor.

Green Berets in Vietnam are a special breed of men. Heros cut from a different clothe . I love hearing anything to do with these men especially during Vietnam .. really any Vietnam vet. But for some reason the Green Berets hit my heart in ways that I can't explain . They are true warriors and sincerely committed to their motto ." To liberate the oppressed " God bless our Vietnam vets and thank God for our incredible Green Berets . There is no warrior like them . Thank you men for all you have done and accomplished since your birth in 1952 . I will always have the utmost respect for you and appreciate your elite mentality .

WOW....this young Captain had to take over command of his men and Did what is expected from a leader. He managed to save his men under fire. Thank God for your selfless bravery. Amazing account of your Vietnam experience. Hope you get the metal you deserve. 💞🇨🇱

My uncle is in the same situation. A large ambush on their patrol was about to to wipe them out. He jumped on a burning tank manned the machine gun forcing the advancing enemy back. They launched a mortar at him and it landed right behind him blowing him off the tank filling the entire backside of his body full of shraplnel. He still can't get past a metal detector. He got the silver star cause it was faster. He saved a multiple platoons that day on a burning tank going full on Rambo. He deserves more.

I sure wish they would talk about how my dad carried the radio and no one else wanted to he volunteered for it. My dads account is a lil different but he was carrying the radio . I heard more stories from him than anyone about this engagement. please show him a little more support he passed when I was 18 he got a bronze star for this also.

I am a strong supporter of keeping medals from being ungraded! Keep POLITICS out of it! Albracht exaggerates his combat action and plays politics! HE has been politicking for years to get a Medal of Honor!

I've seen a couple of things about Firebase Kate, and heard about an hour of two that was radio recordings. I would really like to hear/see interviews with the men who were there. The close air support during a desperate situation was all that kept them alive. Outstanding military tactical situational awareness from their young captain and the amazing support saved their bacon.
