A cooperative in drought-prone Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu has shown that growing a forest and rainwater harvesting can be a profitable business and generate livelihood. This is a 250-acres green patch with a number of rainwater harvesting structures spread across the area. Piyush Manush, an environmental activist from Tamil Nadu is the man behind this innovative and enterprising idea. The primary objective of this forest is not only to demonstrate that afforestation can be a decent source of income but also a sustainable and eco-friendly way of living. The forest has over a lakh (.1 million) bamboo and Aloe Vera plants which is used commercially. There are also different varieties of fruit trees which provide seasonal revenue. The forest is also responsible for groundwater recharge in the vicinity and has improved the water table in the area.

Wise words indeed. Work in harmony and intelligence with Nature and it will reward us back many times over. Act stupidly and it will punish us big time. Ask any American farmer or their descendants who remember the period of the Dust Bowl on the mid-Western prairies of the USA or Canada in the 1930s. A man-made cataclysmic environmental tragedy that caused wholesale misery for thousands. Read John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". A wonderful poignant tale set in those times, and what incredible trauma it caused a whole community. Ignorance, especially of ourselves and our place in the natural order of things, is the enemy of life, prosperity and reason.

When trees are planted in an area, they act as water catchment for that area reducing surface flow. ... Besides, the roots of plants grow deep into the soil, and this helps break and loosen soil particles to ensure that water seeps even deeper into the soil.

Absolutely wonderful! It seems counter-intuitive that planting more trees increases the available water, but it's true. I know this from planting trees in my own back yard. My most successful combination is a fig tree with sweet potatoes underneath it. The fig tree shades the sweet potatoes when they start growing, and then the sweet potato vines spread out and keep the ground cool and moist even in the middle of summer.

I'm living in northern of Thailand. We are facing the problem of extremely hot weather in summer. also flooding occurs in the rainy season and gets worse every year. The problem arises from cutting trees to grow short-term crops that sell quickly. Now local people are becoming more aware and paying more attention to planting forests to reduce heat. and absorb water during floods- I admire what you are doing in India. You're on the right track.

A really great story and the science behind it is the same as I was taught in school in the 90s. Its really not complicated but it does need someone with vision, dedication and personality to get people to try it. I hope lots of other places follow his example because if we wait for governments to help, regardless of nationality, we will all be waiting a long time.

It's so amazing that once people start to treat the land properly it heals itself very quickly. They started planting trees and then trees started growing on their own. Birds and other animals that used to live there come back. It's a shame that the people who are doing this are small in comparison to the rest of the country. Once people see that area you would think they would implement the same plan or the government would do this on a larger scale.

The most important thing is you thought of doing something like this good friend. I would say you will need a group of people who share the same idea as you. I have watch many excellent videos from India...just make check dams, sand dams, barriers. Dig holes to retain the water. Or form checker board large squares ( 10 M x 15 M with a hole in one corner). Slow down the passage of water, let it soak into the ground. Even very hard ground will soften over time and become conducive for plants to grow. Once roots form, more changes to the soil structure occurs. Soil microbes, earthworms, insects, etc. will multiply. The fungi (called mychorrizal fungi) forms vast netwrks to bring nutrients to the plants. Nature does most of the work. We start by slowing down the rainwater run-offs. I note that they also dug deep ponds to create a reservoir...ponds that are easily 10 M deep. Well done. Such ideas grow over time with experience, when there is funding. Supporting it is the passion and vision of One Man who spread it to a Community. India is indeed rising with such people. And Tamil Nadu is just one of many examples across India.

I was brought up in Kerala, near Palakkad. At that time, there was a pond in every household. We used to be farmers, cultivating paddy. I am bringing this idea to Tunisia. The cost is low and the benefits are high. I can vouch for what Nature can bring. Even in my urban condo garden, in a small patch, I can see Nature bringing the seeds via the birds and insects. All it takes is Water and also to improve the soil characteristics.

I would not **trust** everyone among these names to work with a limited scalability profit model, as can seem this project. That is why the way most of them run their business looks exploitative. They are ready to bleed an industry/domain/situation dry if there is a paisa's worth of profit. And altruism of any kind from them, except for one or two names, may likely to be only eyewash to get the public to see them in a kinder light. As this video's example goes, a cooperative is a great way to get projects going. It also keeps big businesses from becoming large-scale aggregators. I hope there are more common people-owned cooperatives than business-owned/influential people-owned ones.
