That 2002 Jordan livery was gorgeous!!! And now you’re telling me that it changed the entire brand identity of DHL, which I’ve only ever known for being red/yellow… This video is going to blow up!!!
Having worked for DHL at the time, the reason why the F1 car was painted yellow was because DHL was taken over by Deutche Post whose iconic livery was yellow.
I think it was more of a happy coincidence thing. DHL was pretty likely to somewhat incorporate the CI/CD of Deutsche Post (the tone of yellow, Postgelb, is still shared between the two), so while it might have accelerated the efforts, it's pretty unlikely that Jordan actually caused it.
@@socialist2000 It's not fake ffs, it's explaining what happened when DHL changed their colout to yellow, not claiming that it couldn't have happened any other way.
Most likely it also has to with Deutsche Post colors being yellow and black for decades and when they bought DHL, they wanted some kind of corporate identity to match the colors of the two brands. But anyway, didn’t know that Eddie played a role in this. It’s nice to see the quirky yellow Jordan cars, since this has become a rare color in F1.
Well, Deutsche Post´ s Color scheme is yellow and black. I think it was the purchase of DHL by Deutsche Post that changed DHL´s color scheme to fit the mother brand, rather than Eddie Jordan ….
Eddie Jordan actually had a book that had all the companies in the world at the time that had the color green as apart of their color scheme Edit: he also initially had called the 191 the 911 but Porsche wasn't happy so he finessed them out of a free car (although in hindsight, it's for the best that they changed the car to the 191 as one of the sponsors was a company called Osama... Osama+911=yikes)
The late 90s Jordan was pop culture in F1, It had that Blur/Oasis football hooligan look to it and gained alot of fans because of It, plus there were the yellow leather clad Jordan girls
I'm pretty sure one of the biggest companies in Germany wasn't forced nor convinced to change their corporate design because of one F1 team from the 2000s😂 As someone who works for the DPDHL group I can proudly say that the company loves the yellow colour and that DHL was destined to change the background to include the yellow which is synonymous with postal services in the country (since before F1 even existed).
It is funny how DPD and DHL have worse drivers for package delivery than Amazon. Only GLS is roughly as horrible. So many times have I ordered something and waited at my door, only to get a phone notification they could not deliver the package because "no one was home". I have stopped buying from shops who use the services of these companies. PS. Good on Jordan. Loved that team back then.
This is an amazing story, but it's important to know that the “Deutsche Post” logo was black on yellow for years already, so that probably helped too. They even used the same yellow for DHL after that.
That DHL meeting with the pages with pictures of white vans was actually a genius idea and it really did show that being yellow did stand out in a crowded market of white (on the F1 grid and also their delivery vans)
Its not yellow because of F1, its because of its merger with the Deutsche Bundespost, which has always been yellow since WW2. All post service vans, the letter boxes and even the public phone boths are yellow as well. The yellow with the postal horn has always been their trade mark.
Great video, although I'm not sure if the story from Eddy Jordan is that trustworthy (although you told it very well I must say) Because the logo is actually done by Nitsch Design, after the purchase by Deutsche Post, which had to redesign the logo from executives at DP. Because DP was yellow and black and because DHL at the time was red and white, they decided on changing the white to yellow to signal the acquisition. That's also why the yellow of DHL has the exact same colour code as that of DP. This is how a senior executive marketing director of DHL explained it anyways. But it probably also played a role of course, but I'm sure the folks are DP didn't just yolo it in one meeting.
The other part I don't believe for a second is that is B&H had to remind him the car had to be yellow. If he did actually tell DHL/Deutsche Post the car was going to be white, he would have 100% known he was bullshitting them and just planned on blagging his way out of it later once they were on the hook
I can't find any source for both side of the story. The only thing i could find is from wikipedia, where that part doesn't had any reference linked to it.
I just became your 794th subscriber. Can’t wait to flex with that in a couple of years. You are going to be big if you keep this quality up, lovely video
Worth remembering that the first Jordan (196) with the B&H sponsorship launched with their colour of gold, reflecting the cigarette packets. This didn't read* on television and Eddie persuaded B&H to shift to the bright yellow. So EJ has effectively done this twice. *Also, the reason Ferrari for a while became basically orange at one point.
B&H packets remained that bronze/gold colour throughout, they didn't change the packs to yellow. They may not have been allowed, by law, as bright packages appeal to children.
@@RBenjo21 For some bizarre reason, I can vividly remember Murray Walker, before the formation lap, talking about the anger of the Tifosi at the change.
They had a mustard yellow to begin with in 96 then swapped to a quite nice gold livery after the first couple of years , neither worked well on TV before they went to bright yellow the following year.
This was very informative and surprisingly haven't seen anyone else do a video on this little tidbit of information. It was very well presented as well! Good job! Subscribed with the bell on for sure! 💕
Buddy, amazing video and amazing history, unknown but interesting and very relevant, great pick! Respect for Eddie Jordan, genious move, and also props to DHL for seeing the oportunity
Didn't know that. I used to think DHL was already yellow because of Deutsche Post corporate identity. Here in germany post has been connected to the color yellow for quite sometime. Other brands like UPS or FedEx weren't a thing until the early 2000s.
True story. Eddy Jordan approached 7UP and said: “if you pay £xxxmillion, we will make our cars the same green as your logo.” 7UP agreed and paid up. Meanwhile,EJ then approached Bank of Ireland and said: “If you pay us £xxxmillion, we will make you the main sponsor and paint our cars green in your colours.” - Bank of Ireland agreed. So 7UP and Bank of Ireland were both paying extra for the honour of having an F1 team in what they believe to be their colours 🤣
Jordan thought they had a sponsorship with Vodafone for 2002 too which would've give them a red and white car. Eddie was furious when they signed with Ferrari instead of his team and started court procedings saying they had lost $150 million but that case was eventually dropped.
I didn't know about this! Amazing info Just a quick note, why does it feels as if this video is slowed down? I've had to put it in 1.25x to feel as if the narrator was talking normally
Note that 0:24 is a different red than the red at 0:28 - which hints to a total redesign of the colour palette, not just adding yellow from a friggin’ F1 team…
Please allow me to share your well narrated urban legend with friends from DPDHL Global Brand Marketing :) The yellow Jordan with the black horn painted on the side was always branded as the „fastest Postal Delivery Van on earth“. From a Marketing point of view, the real story back then was that DPDHL stopped sponsoring individual teams when Ecclestone offered them the contract to manage the entire F1 Logistics. That move turned out to work quite well. You wouldn’t believe how many happy DPDHL corporate clients run around the Paddock Club each Race Weekend nowadays..
4:34 Racing Point is technically a whole new team that acquired all the assets of Force India when the latter is put into administration and their entry in the 2018 season is seized as part of the settlement (feel free to correct). They did give Sergio Perez his first F1 win at the Sakhir GP in Bahrain tho which is pretty cool for a two-ish year-old team.
... Isn't that what buying a team means? I'm sure Jordan had nothing to do with Midland; Shnaider had nothing to do with Spyker or Force India, and Mallya has nothing to do with Aston Martin now
@@juanin200 not exactly. A "normal" sale of a team (e.g. Brawn to Mercedes, Jaguar to Red Bull, etc) is the old owners selling the entire team as a single, unbroken entity to the new owners. So while Eddie Jordan didn't have anything to do with Midland when he sold the Jordan team, Ford didn't have anything to do with Red Bull after they sold Jaguar, etc, but *the TEAM* is still the same team. The same legal entity, with new owners and a rebranding to reflect new sponsors. The Force India to Racing Point situation is different from a legal standpoint, because Force India went into administration (similar to bankruptcy in the US). At that point, Force India as a team ceased to exist from a legal standpoint, and all of their stuff was sold off to pay their creditors. The "Racing Point" group essentially bought all of the now-defunct Force India team's physical assets and IP, but in a package deal instead of piece by piece, then started the "new team" with the property and IP and hired all the former Force India employees.. Even though it's essentially the exact same parts, properties, and personnel, it's a new legal entity, unlike what happened with previous team sales. It looks the same from the outside to the fans, as the final result is essentially the same (same people working in the same building but with different shirts and car color), but because of the way the legal system works it is treated as if it were a separate entity. That's why there was a bit of a fuss when Haas and some other teams pointed out that Racing Point wasn't entitled to as much of a payout from F1, because of their legal status as a "new team."
I didn't know DHL "yellowed" because of Jordan, or because of Benson & Hedges rather... This is fascinating. But then again, Eddie was apparently just that kind of man able to do these things.
Fantastic story! What a neat video. I really liked Eddie Jordan. He was such a fun privateer. Those were great days when you didn’t have to be a trillionaire to make it up to the midfield.🤐
They must have thought about the change before. Since they merched with the Post, who are yellow and black. I have on my work uniform now just a simple red "DHL" sign on one side and a black "Deutsche Post" on the other. So it just works perfectly.
It doesn't work perfectly for me when I come to deliver the mail and the people scream at me to pickup their parcels. Then I have to explain that operationally the Post has very little to do with DHL and that I can't collect parcels.
WAIT WHAT?! DHL changed their brand to Yellow & Red just because of Jordan?? I've always known DHL or their Yellow & Red color so this is quite the shock for me
DHL: "hey can you make the car white and red for us?" Eddie Jordan: "sure, I can do that" Benson & Hedges: "nope, car has to be yellow!" Eddie Jordan: "alright, car is yellow and red" DHL: "hold up, y'all actually cooking FR FR! This is now our corporate color scheme"
LOL NO... THE YELLOW IS BECAUSE DEUTSCHEPOST (ALSO JORDAN F1 PARTNERS) BOUGHT DHL ON 1999... This war was yellow because its DEUTSCHEPOST COLOR👍 Edit: ok i see a lot of people tell you that too.
