as far as ive seen those signs are in areas where it is not needed and is not necessary and are usually in residential areas. so if you are going the posted speed limit or whatever you deem to be safe then you will be fine but if you are going faster than you know you should be to the point where you need to drop 10 or more mph to go around a curve then that is your fault.

Bisbee has a steep grade and just feet south and down of US 80 on this part are public and private buildings. Los of control could result in the city facing the question, how do we retrieve a tractor/trailer off the roof and the second floor of the library and what's the cost of fixing it? Is it worth it because of it's historical significance to not only the city but the county and state as well? Will the feds help, since the post office occupies the first floor? There is also a large presence of Environazis here as well. The kind that is in large part responsible for Phelps Dodge (now Freeport-McMoRan) all but leaving.

I might help you there! Imagine having big coil springs on the soles of your shoes. If you jump you will compress the springs and they will hurl you back up in the air. Your downward force is storing energy in the springs, and it is given back to you by uncoiling all that stored energy and sending you at least some of the way back into the air with no effort from you other than what you add by jumping back up at the same time to achieve equal or even greater height than before! Now imagine you were jumping on a sheet of plywood suspended off the ground and at the moment the springs collapsed to their maximum point they shot right through the plywood! You would simply land hard and all that stored energy would be wasted! A trampoline would be similar- it stores and releases energy also unless your feet tear through at the bottom of the downward stroke! Now on to the engine. When a piston is in a compression stroke, and imagine you add NO fuel shot at that moment, the piston would "spring" back down just from the stored energy alone in the compressed air at the top of the stroke. NOW, if "something" (the Jake mechanism) opens the exhaust valve at that exact moment when the maximum energy is stored in the highly compressed air, all that energy will be "wasted" when it goes roaring out the exhaust pipe instead of boosting the piston back down. It took a lot of horsepower (COMING FROM THE WHEELS NOW THOUGH SINCE YOU ARE PLANNING TO STOP AND THE WHEELS ARE DRIVING THE ENGINE) to compress all that air, and instead of recovering the "spring" effect it is wasted out the exhaust! It is the SAME principle of driving an air compressor with an electric motor! Horsepower used up in compressing the air and no recovery of energy in the air compressor cylinder. It all leaves the compressor cylinder through a "type" of exhaust valve! So you see that any horsepower delivered to the engine THROUGH THE WHEELS is used up with the Jake system, AND IT AMOUNTS TO BRAKE POWER! SOMETIMES MORE THAN THE RATED HORSEPOWER OF THE ENGINE, SINCE "BRAKING HORSEPOWER" OF 10 BRAKE DRUM/SHOE COMBINATIONS CAN BE CONSIDERABLY MORE THAN THE FEW HUNDRED HORSEPOWER OF THE DIESEL ENGINE WHEN IT IS POWERING THE REAR WHEELS! A very interesting thing is this: AN AMATEUR in a truck can CRASH the truck if he is not loaded, OR if there is ice or EVEN RAIN on the road and all that power available inside the engine COMPLETELY STALLS THE ENGINE AND OF COURSE STOPS THE WHEELS FROM TURNING AT ALL!! Just like slamming on the brakes he will Jacknife before he ever recovers any means to get those wheels turning again and the engine running again!!!

Let me help you...and for a good reason, they don't tell you what is going on...it's very hard on your engine.. they open the exhaust valve at top dead center, venting the compressed air.. valves closed, no air in cylinder and the piston starts down..what happens next? That's right, you pull a vacuum, until you suck the valves open.. you stress the entire engine backwards.. I have seen the tops of Pistons sucked off, rod bolts broken, wrist pins snapped.. Your Jake isn't as strong, in your older truck? Replace the worn out valve springs!!! Or put stiffer ones in, and get a Jake from hell.

I'm a little suspicious of this "requirement". I used to drive trucks and not every truck had an engine brake. I've driven in 47 states and have no recollection of anywhere that "required" an engine brake. The responsibility of safely descending any grade has always come down to the driver, not a "requirement" to use a certain type of optional equipment. The opposite is definitely true though. There are many, many places that prohibit the use of engine brakes, and that is something that those friendly cops could be listening for to ensure compliance.

I had a V8 Cummins 903 years ago and couldn't wait to get into a town and release the Jake beast. It had it's own style of bark for sure. Loved it. But in serious measure it worked well if driven correctly. I always use the philosophy of using the same gear downhill as i would uphill and never had a problem. Could flick the Jake between half and full depending on what it was doing. In the wet empty could catch you out if switched on full retardation, the rear wheels would actually lock up and slide. The switch on full going uphill at 40 ton I could change the RR up as it brought the revs down very quickly, trying that without the Jake was a waste of time.

Opening the exhaust valve on the compression stroke makes no sense to me. Simply turning off the fuel injector would have the same effect, this could be done via engine management without the need for mechanical changes to the engine. Also by eliminating the compression stroke the engine temp will fall to low.

Many people seem puzzled by fuel situation. In braking mode, no fuel is delivered because the driver's foot is off the accelerator pedal and engine rpm is above idle. Many people also seem puzzled by how braking is achieved. The clearest statement I've ever seen is from a service manual that said "the Jake brake achieves braking by using the engine as a power consuming air pump." Consider what would happen in a running diesel engine if something held the exhaust valves open a very small amount. An engine that has no clearance for fully open exhaust valves could accomodate having them open .025. It used to be called compression release in the days of outside rail 220 Cummins and starting aid system. Think about what happens if the valves are held open like that. Compression stroke drives air through the small opening of the part open valve, makes a partial stroke of high-pressure air which is dumped into the exhaust manifold as it's compressed. High pressure air pulse makes a sharp bark, and it takes a significant amount of energy to compress the air. Larger displacement engines should brake better, turboed engines likewise. Also explains the mediocre Jake on a Jimmy powered truck. Jimmies are smaller displacement for their horsepower, and their valve train doesn't lend itself as well to braking. Since the exhaust valves only cool during their dwell on the seat, extended engine braking gets the exhaust valves extremely hot. Brakes that brake stronger get the valves hotter. The gases in the cylinder during braking are very oxygen rich, since no combustion is happening. Very hot metal plus lots of oxygen is worse than heat alone. Even though they can create problems, the Jake is still one of the best inventions in the history of ever.

Thanks for your comment. Please find more information on our website about the noise you are hearing. "I'm bothered by the noise of big trucks using their Engine Brakes, what can I do? The federal government has required all vehicles manufactured since 1978 to meet noise requirements when delivered to the customer, so trucks have been required to meet the requirements when they leave the dealership as new vehicles for quite some time. The real problem here is modified or defective exhaust systems. The use of the engine brake is not the problem. Citizens and truck drivers can both do their part to keep the noise down. Citizens, encourage your local police to stop noisy vehicles and check them for muffler integrity. Truckers, if you know someone who is operating a vehicle with an excessively loud exhaust system, encourage him or her to fix it." www.jacobsvehiclesystems.com/about-us/environmental-health-safety/noise-concerns/

@charlieodom9107
@charlieodom9107 5 лет назад
@@1320fastback to a certain extent, you are correct, but not all the time. Certain conditions have to be met. You are referencing DFCO, which, depending on the vehicle tuning, requires certain speeds, rpms, and loads. DFCO works best when the timing is set to near 0, but you get no engine braking this way. Most manufacturers set DFCO timing to allow for a progressive engine braking curve, but this makes the system work less efficiently. Personally, I tune mine to limit engine braking to maximize the time DFCO is activated, except on towing vehicles, which I set for maximum braking. Also, modern automatic transmissions unlock the TCC at 0 throttle, thereby drastically reducing the braking effect during DFCO. This can NOT be changed by programming in most modern vehicles, so you are stuck with a shitty DFCO system that doesn't save much on gas.
