Someone needs to track down McMahon and show him this This is one of the things I love about footy. It’s a distillation of the butterfly effect. You normally can’t pin it all down to single moments like this but every single thing that happens at a club becomes part of its story, and whenever that club achieves success, all of that stuff was part of that story.
Can’t believe I was at that game as a Melbourne fan. I remember it so vividly, the crowd going nuts as the ball went through was honestly heart crushing as a 8 year old
Great video and an amazing 'what if' scenario to ponder. As a long suffering Tigers fan, this truly was a monumental moment that helped transform the trajectory of the club. Funnily enough, I still remember being upset with some Melbourne supporting mates who gloated that tanking and getting picks 1 and 2 was better than a meaningless win. I remember being sad that a number 1 pick in Scully who was a Tigers fan growing up, and who could have been a messiah type figure to rescue the club from mediocrity would be playing for another team. Funny how things work out. Dusty became that figure. Though on a side note, it's a shame to see highly promising careers never materialise due to injuries and other factors. Would have loved to have seen both Scully and Trengrove fulfill their potential - and Vickery and Tambling for that matter too. Both were, are and have been maligned but their contributions here were vital and at the end of the day, they are people just trying to live their lives who don't deserve abuse and ridicule. Had the pleasure of meeting Tambling once during a preseaon visit to my home town growing up and he was polite, friendly and nothing but a good bloke.
@@the_vortexian yeah you should have easily won that preliminary in 2016 and beat the swans in the gf, 2019, maybe not, Richmond were dominating the finals
You are bloody good at working this butterfly effect mate! - as a Crows fan, I say that Richard Tambling kick may have cost us a premiership as well :D
Great video as always mate. Always after more AFL content on RU-vid. Like the way that you didn't bag Melbourne for picking Scully and Trengrove, instead putting us in the position of the recruiters at the time, where there was a clear top 2, even though Dusty has clearly turned out better. Have got a couple of videos over on my channel if you love AFL that you may enjoy, with more videos in the pipeline soon.
I have 100% been talking about this to fellow Richmond fans for YEARS now (add in the fact we gave up pick 21 to get McMahon (Callan Ward - captain of GWS), BUT I could never have put this as eloquently, sequentially and convincingly as you did...WELL DONE!
This is a scary good analysis. AFL needs more deep dive analysis like this, there are so many stories to be told and picked apart in the game and it's so rare to find someone willing to do it.
Love this and every other run through you’ve done on any sport. Such good videos mate maybe you could do one on the what’s happening with Carlton in the past 10-16 years .
Well why do you think that Essendon seems to have got off with almost a slap on the wrist for drugging there players? Calton had a salary cap breach. We where then slapped in every way we could have. We have only recently got out of debt due to the fine that they enacted. Not to mention losing any draft picks for a year.
Love it mate hopefully we can still push for a 4th b4 Dusty retires. What a crazy decade it’s been. Thinking of the challenge by the group who wanted Dimma Peggy etc out. If that happens and a clear out of players occurs we could be looking at no flags and a couple more wooden spoons for good measure. Yet no one would have known what doing that had actually cost the club bloody scary.
Richmond drafted Martin and made the finals in 2013 (their first finals since 2001) and eventually won 3 premierships and Melbourne continued to struggle but these struggles led to good picks esp Petracca, Oliver, and the 2009 draft steal Max Gawn. In 2017 Melbourne missed the finals by a kick but in 2018 Melbourne were on the rise and made the finals but went down hard with injuries and poor play, but then came 2021 when they were able to field a healthy team, regrouped and the rest was history.
Best AFL content around gotta do a video of the hawthorn dominance from 2011-2015 4 grand finals in a row and a 5point prelim loss would be good to see the content that would create
8 month later and I wish we have the similar miracle this year but I'm thankful what gave the Tigers the dynasty years after a suffering 37 years granny drought
Pretty Sure the if this happens the dees have pick 2, in which they probably select Trengove after Scully goes to Richmond at 1, they won’t have a priority pick as they end up with 5 wins for the year (unless they still tanked to get 4 in which they would still get Scully and Trengove) so this means Martin probably ends up at maybe a Fremantle or a North Melbourne
I became an AFL fan because I’m a rugby player and it’s hard being a rugby fan in USA and you had to get special tv channels to watch it and they were just coincidentally showing AFL games too. I love some good AFL RU-vid content
It's crazy to think that there could be many more forgotten matches like this where a different result could have changed everything. Especially back in the 80's and 90's when half the clubs were under financial pressure to do well
Even if Richmond lost, they still would’ve drafted Dustin Martin at #1. The club were extremely high on him, Francis Jackson loved him. This Jordan McMahon goal is a truism that is quite specious.
Cats too in relation to what happens if dusty goes to gws, cats are likely to win 2019 and 2020 or at least play the giants in a grand final in those years with no Richmond stopping them.
But does Dangerfield leave the Crows if they win 2017? Because without the Tigers theres a strong chance that Adelaide side wins the GF and Danger could be lured into another contract. I think Geelong would be nowhere near as strong in 19 and 20 without Dangerfield.
@@rew6184 yes because he didn't leave Adelaide for success but to return home to his family and to start his family, he made it known recently the decision was made mid season.
@@rew6184 Dangerfield left the Crows after the 2015 season. Maybe Geelong wins the 2017 Qualifying Final if there had have been no Dusty playing for Richmond. Maybe it would have been a Cats v Crows Grand Final in 2017 as well. People also said that Geelong wouldn't be as strong in 2020 without Tim Kelly. That theory was proven to be wrong.
It’s just possible that things wouldn’t have turned out so differently y’know. Tom Scully was an elite talent, to be sure. Maybe HE would’ve been the darling of the Tiger faithful, perhaps even driving them to an earlier premiership in 2016…while Dusty never realised his potential in less conducive surroundings elsewhere?
Great video. I’m 2009, everyone would have taken Scully and Trengove over Dusty. Shame how they both didn’t fulfil potential because they had so much talent.
Richmond didn't even finish top 10, wow but gws got top 8 so idk you tell me buddy, and to be honest we made it there in 10 years, I mean that's impressive for a new team but you may correct me in anyway. We've done well and it's sad Richmond joined in 1908 and has 100,420 in 10 years giants are a third of the way. But correct me in anyway, please
