How a Muffler Works

Here's what the inside of a muffler looks like and how it works.
A muffler is used near the end of the exhaust system on a vehicle to reduce the noise emitted by the engine. The noise comes from the combustion chamber, and travels through the exhaust stream.
The muffler has a series of perforated tubes, baffles and a trap door that redirect exhaust gases. As the gases travel, sound waves are either absorbed, or reflected and destructively interfered, cancelling them out.
The exhaust gas continues to flow around in the muffler and out the tail pipe. However, most mufflers pose as a restriction for an internal combustion engine, because the exhaust gases have to travel around, back in a reverse direction and then out the tail pipe. This is known as reverse flow or turbo style muffler.
Many mufflers are accompanied upstream by a resonator, that reduces certain frequencies of sound in the exhaust stream before it enters the muffler. On the outside, it looks like a small tube increasing to a large diameter tube, and then back down to exhaust pipe diameter.
Mufflers work on the principle of destructive interference and absorption. The walls of the muffler are made of two layers of stainless steel, which help reduce vibration and absorb sound. Some mufflers have a fiberglass material around the perforated tubes to help absorb sound.
Destructive interference occurs when a sound wave is reflected off a surface and interferes with the inbound sound wave. The high amplitudes interference with the low amplitudes, and the net amplitude becomes zero. Baffles are strategically distanced to cancel out certain frequencies.
The muffler illustrated in this video was from a 2001 Toyota Corolla. It features a spring loaded passive exhaust flap. The flap opens once pressure is built at higher RPM's, allowing the majority of exhaust gases to enter into the third and final chamber, before exiting the tail pipe.

@VanillaSnake21
@VanillaSnake21 7 лет назад
But I don't understand the point of the suggestion, you're saying compromise the muffler and make it less effective in reducing noise as well as create a exhaust leak for what? Just to make sure the muffler doesn't rust? But at that point it's a garbage muffler anyway.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 7 лет назад
+VanillaSnake21 yea true. Its a trade off.
@VanillaSnake21
@VanillaSnake21 7 лет назад
No you don't understand. A trade off for what? A trade off to keep the muffler longer? But what's the difference between a rust making a hole in the muffler or you? When you make holes in it you might as well throw it out anyways.
@theravedaddy
@theravedaddy 6 лет назад
An 1/8 hole in the muffler aint gonna do shit to the noise you bellend but it will drain all the collected condensation out. Many exhausts have them as standard so give up trying to be a smartass.

Nice explanation , I've heard from my mechanic that if u start a car's engine don't shut it down straight away as the water vapour will condensate in the cold muffler and resonator , let it run for few minutes until the pipes become hot then water won't condensate and this will prevent it from rusting
@charlieangkor8649

Rust needs oxygen to form. The point of car engine is to consume the oxygen from air to burn fuel and emit exhaust gases that don't contain oxygen anymore. So how could the rust form when there is no oxygen?

Very clear, informative and concise....and I like the 'used-toothbrush pointer' too. Where can I get one? I bet it's 'branded'🤣🤣🤣. Indeed a garage classroom! Have since subscribed for the 'classes'. 🫡👍🙌

Also, the pic with waves is misleading because it shows only one time instant. At other time instants the waves are shifted (remember - they are waves, they travel - surprise surprise) and the calcellation doesn't work except those zero points. It even makes the sound stronger in the points in between the zeros.

Some of the terminology and explanation was a bit too crude but being an Acoustic Engineer who designs these reactive mufflers for mining dump trucks and a whole lot, I enjoyed youor video. However, I must add that the explanation at 2:19 is wrong. That connecting neck is not for exhaust gases to bypass the last chamber (however that inadvertently will happen), that is what is called a "Helmholtz Resonator". The volume of the second chamber and geometry of the connecting neck (among a lot of other factors) decides what is the resonant frequency of that 2nd chamber. The sound frequencies at and near the resonant frequency get attenuated due to helmholtz effect.

Cool. Thanks. 3 inch exhaust systems common? I've got a stove I made from scrap metal and was thinking of using old exhaust pipe and maybe even muffler in it if I could find it. i've seen some different stove systems that have a similar concept as the muffler with baffles and such.

nyat, drills the holes in bottom muffler to make water from keeping rusting, also holes make for lighter and for lighter go faster because race car.
