Behind iRobot’s practical Roomba vacuums, lies a dark secret. A scandalous invasion of privacy of them spying on people in their homes and posting images on social media without their knowledge or consent was exposed by MIT Technology Review, revealing how the Roombas were capturing compromising moments, like a woman using the toilet, and even showing children and pets. Watch our video to find out what happened, and how you can protect yourself and your home from this insidious invasion of privacy.

This is exactly why I bought one without a camera Lidar rocks. I'm not having conversations while a noisy vacuum is running, so the eavesdropping thing is not much of a real concern for me. BTW, I was one of the beta testers for this camera version. I made sure to never be in a compromising position in front of it, because I knew that everything was being sent for diagnostics. The constant vigilance around it is what made me decide I didn't want one with a camera Edit: I wasn't ever promised the end product. Maybe that was only promised to the first few testers

When things like lightbulbs and floor sweepers (they'll never be real vacuum cleaners!) need access to the internet, then I question the safety and security of those devices right away, after all, why do they need access to the internet to cast light or sweep crumbs off the floor? There's no good reason, at all, bad enough we have smartphones that gather data about us as it is...

so, folks will always want to use new gadgets, and a giant portion of people are able to keep clean that werent before bc of time, disability, etc. now that there are vacuuming robots so I think "just not using them," isn't a practical answer companies seem to think that these small devices need only minimal security because they're simple little things, but you know what? I actually think the solution to this is kind of to do the opposite: make these little gadgets have as much security as a wired desktop computer is capable of having. that's certainly not foolproof, but it would carry the same level of risk that the usage of a computer has. the problem I'm seeing is that it may be cost prohibitive, but I am certain there are inexpensive ways to make it work. thoughts?
@dacksonflux
@dacksonflux Год назад
@@moonimbued older versions of these gagdets don't require internet. They've simple enough programming that they don't really need updating. I refuse to believe that invasion of privacy is necessary when functioning versions exist without it. My grandmother is getting older and can't always clean her home. She has an older Roomba that doesn't record her nor does it need wifi. It works fine. Her home stays clean and private. ON TOP OF THAT we don't give healthcare providers the same excuse when they breach patient confidentiality. The idea that we should put up with Amazon and other companies shamelessly invading a disabled person's privacy for the sake of their quality of life is a flimsy defense.

Also random things like the oven, washer, dryer, and refrigerator. The first 3 kind of make sense, like sending you a notification they're done. But why would a fridge/freezer need wifi? "Your ice is ready"? "Power outage detected, on-board power supply at 98%"? If you're worried about a blackout rotting your food, then have an offgrid solar battery powered home, or just plug important things into a backup power supply, like what hospitals and serious office workers & gamers use.

I agree with you, but it isn't just up to the elected representatives though. I think that the general American population has forgotten that we also have power to influence companies. If enough people don't buy from companies that they don't like the practices of and are vocal as to why, they'll be forced to change. Take Disney for example, they are losing thousands if not millions of dollars because of recent practices and eventually it'll catch up to them and they'll change or have to sell to someone else. That is why monopolies are illegal, because with a monopoly it takes away our power to drive the market.

I bought Roomba I3's. No camera and it works perfectly fine using accelerometers and simple IR sensors. It also doesn't get confused with bed skirts and the like. It might send my house layout to the CCP but, well, I don't really care. You can have a smart house without any cameras just fine. Just don't buy those products!

Ring has a complete community wide surveillance system set up. Who do you think has access to it. George Orwell would know. Alexa has been watching and listening to you go #2 and that weird way you and your partner wrestle at night. It knows the weird ways you get off and your embarrassing safe word. It knows how you talk smack about your friend. It knows you sighed when you remembered you have to visit your parents…. Your own parents. 😳 It’s silently judging you for your sad life. Now when will we get smart trash cans that monitor what companies can sell us? Or smart microwaves?

Hey guys if this camera thing bothers you and you also own a Samsung phone. You should read the last policy update as well as this newest policy update before continuing to use your phone. I know I'm disappointed in them and what they're having you sign by using their product cuz if you don't sign the privacy policy when they send it to you you can no longer use their device is what it says or there's going to be legal consequences whatever that means. I've already brought it up to the chief of police in my area just to ask if it's something that can be done and they said as long as I sign the privacy thing by saying I agree then I agreed whatever they say it's up to me. Just to be more specific I own a Samsung S8.

@thisisme3238 Год назад
@@cyrus05w yes, I own a pixel...to get your questions answered correctly, I would suggest looking up info on Google Pixel phones..that way I won't have accidentally given out wrong or misleading information to you. Let's just say, as far as the phones longivity is concerned, I have owned 2 Samsung phones (each lasted about 2 years each) 1 Sanyo (which lasted almost 10 years) and 1 Google Pixel ( still using it going into 4 years now), Pixel has a fantastic camera for photos (one of the reasons I bought it), as my work periodically requires sharp image photography. Hope this answered some of your questions...please seek out your answers to more technical questions thru Google for the most accurate and up to date information.
@cyrus05w
@cyrus05w Год назад
@@thisisme3238 thank you thank you it actually does answer one of the two questions. I remember reading up on the quality of the picture outcome a while ago I was hoping it's still the same thank you. I will go to a more technical person to ask about the technical workings. Due to personal vision issues AR+ really helps and there's other stuff that goes along with that. Gosh though on that Samsung phone that only lasted two years, I kind of want to pull out my original Samsung now and see how much memory it had. for some reason I'm thinking 64 megabytes. Before I start going down memory lane and ranting a little thank you for your input and be well.
