The biological treatment septic system gets installed at the Westerly house.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib....
It’s time for the sophisticated septic system to be installed at the Westerly house. The 1500 gallon primary and secondary tanks are buried into the ground. Installer Rick Pezza shows Richard Trethewey the steps, starting with a filtered pump that draws liquid in short cycles from the second tank to a treatment pod. In this pod, the dirty liquid drips down over hanging filter sheets filled with microorganisms that convert the ammonia into nitrogen. Through this biologic process, nitrogen gas gets released into the atmosphere, oxygenated water returns to the main tank, and the remaining treated liquid goes down through the sand filtered field.

This is a very complicated system with basically a mini lift station within the system itself! Not sure where this is but because it’s close to a lake it’s a special system to mitigate contaminating the lake. The first part is more of a conventional tank. The pump in the second compartment is more of a mini lift station that lifts filtered water to the treatment pod (to basically be resent through the tank again to help sustain bacteria that are already there (taking the oxygen out of the nitrogen) before the gases are released in the atmosphere.

I'm in favor of a septic system video series!

The requirements there are basically forcing an individual homeowner to have something nearly as complex as the municipal treatment plants have. By requiring the ammonia nitrogen to be treated, the 2nd tank makes this much more complex than a traditional or standard gravity septic tank and discharge lines. Now a pump and electricity are involved.
@toddreynolds8875

No second tank. , just a standard 2 compartment tank. (Which most all tanks are now. ) all it is standerd concrete septic tank with different risers. They work well. Been in business since the late 1960's. All up and down the Oregon Washington coast. Now very popular elsewhere.
@mkodjohnson

@@toddreynolds8875 I should not have referred to it as a 2nd tank. It is, however, an additional compartment or as the guy in the video referred to it as a "pod" where the media filters are housed. This "pod" is not part of the traditional standard septic systems in my area.

One thing I've always wondered about with water treatment is how you handle any household cleaning chemicals that get into the water. What happens when people flush a bucket of bleach that they were using to clean the bathroom? Doesn't that kill all the "good" bacteria you need for the organic material removal? For a small, individual treatment system like this I'd think that would be an even bigger problem.
@spencerhansen8374

The filtration systems similar to a fish tank. Dumping ammonia and nitrites from a septic system directly into a waterway, or into the groundwater that directly feeds a water wave kills fish and promotes algae blooms. Biological filtration and gas exchange reduce ammonia levels to practically zero. Nitrates and nitrite are far less toxic. Aerobic bacteria are also generally more successful than anaerobic bacteria and breaking down solid wastes to safer compounds.

Most municipalities require by law either a sewer system hook up or a septic system be installed on the property if anyone is going to be living on it and this is usually so strict you can't build anything on the property until that is done first... So, even if you use something else like composting doesn't mean you can avoid this in most places around the country... Some states, like TN, don't even let you dump gray water on the ground... There's a lot of one size fits all in the regulations most local municipalities follow and enforce... There are some places that don't have to deal with it, at least as much, but that's rare and depends on your specific location...

@@davenz000 Something to keep in mind is nothing is ever absolute. Freedoms have limits when they start infringing on the freedom of others and responsibility to prevent abuse of those freedoms... Unless you don't care about the environment, health, and people's lives then things like making sure waste is properly handled is usually a high priority... While the need for this system is just because it's near a body of water, regular gravity based system wouldn't work there but that's the trade off if you want a property that near the body of water... The main problem with the system is the tendency to put in one size fits all rules instead of a case by case adjustment and we live in a society that has become deadly afraid of liability, so you need to find an engineer to sign off on anything non-standard as no one in charge is going to take the responsibility if something goes wrong...
@scottfurlong5475
@scottfurlong5475 4 года назад
@@davenz000 Unlike an animal, a human if left to their own devices, will ruin their own environment. The rules are made by the few that care to protect us from the many that don't. The people behind our property wanted to build a stable and keep 6 horses. We all have drilled wells so us and our neighbors wanted an environmental assessment to determine the extent and means of waste management. The assessment was done, an order of waste management was set forth and we allowed the project to proceed without protest. Only a year later, they had contaminated their own domestic water source and were forced to install expensive filtration systems so they could continue to use their own well.

No power = limited to no septic use anyways so its fine. If they have well water then this is a non issue. The cycle only continues when waste/water is being introduced to the tanks. Even if you just finished a shower and lost power there is enough room to hold everything until power is restored before it backs up.

The problem is population density. I live near some large springs that have deteriorated because of nitrates. The nitrate levels get so high the polluted the ground water. If less people lived in an area we could all use the old drainfield system. Counties allow folks to live on lots that are measured in square feet, verses by the acre, but still have septic systems instead of installing central sewer. We could all be free to have simple stuff if we agreed to not live on point 1 or point 2 acre lots in subdivisions.

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way. Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out. Look for signs that you are saved. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!!

@@shinybaldy what are you talking about? Lol. Here in California there are a lot of septic tanks. My parents farm house has a septic tank. Many unincorporated town here still are on septic.

palillo2006 I’m perfectly fine with septic systems - my comment was aimed at ppl whining about having to treat sewage. I think you missed the other video - where the comments quickly became inundated with ppl ranting about having to put a system in place.
