LOL. NO...just no. I am a submariner and have been part of these operations many times. When we(the US Navy) engages in friendly war games/ops with ally/friendly nations, especially their submarine forces, we significantly hamper our own capabilities, our own operating parameters, our own tools/tactics/techniques we will use. This is well known and well understood by anyone with even an ounce of experience in these matters. If we did not, our allies would almost never have a chance to execute a successful attack our our craft. We used to do, and still do on some occasions, and "even" fight you might call it, and it is never even close. The only way this sort of thing ever happens with ally navy ops, especially countries like Sweden, is when we basically tie our hands behind our backs for the the exercise.

@chriskelly9476
@chriskelly9476 3 года назад
yes and in that exercise the Americans even cheated and still 'lost.' Their ships and an Australian sub were supposed to play a game of 'cat and mouse' as it were and the Americans were supposed to turn off their sonar systems for a while to let the Australian submarine disappear, but they didn't. Rankin (the Aussie sub) still managed to evade them, disappear and then took photographs of their destroyer within torpedo range, undetected.

Interestingly enough, 5 years earlier, in 1999 a Dutch Walrus class sub (similarly a diesel-electric sub) successfully penetrated the U.S. Navy screen and "sank" several ships, including the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt before escaping as part of the multi-national "Joint Task Force Exercise/Theatre Missile Defence Initiative 1999" wargames. So this is not the first time the US navy was left scratching their heads as for ways to fend off diesel-electric sub attacks, and the effectiveness of the Swedish Gotland sub would not have come as a complete surprise. That, and as a Dutchman I feel that we deserve some recognition for that before the Swedes get all the glory ;-)

Yup, I'm sure the rest of the world would go right along with that. Germany wouldn't have built any U-Boats if we told them they were banned. Just like they went right along with the rest of the bans on their military. I'm sure Russia would have been fine with it too, all the U.S. would've had to do was tell them that they are not allowed. Just use a really stearn tone of voice, that way they would know we meant business. While the United States is dictating what war machines are just banned for everyone else, why not include nukes? I'm sure North Korea wouldn't be building them now if America banned them for everyone else back at the end of WWII. At least with nuclear weapons we coulda vaporized any country that wanted to try their hand at building an A-bomb. That way the world would be way safer, most of it would glow in the dark but The United States would be the only country with nukes... and submarines.

funny how this story repeats itself ... same happened in wargames with a german 212A sub ... it went into a US carrier group, scored hits on the carrier and left safely. The US navy is trained to track and counter large nuclear and old diesel subs, but they sure struggle to deal with new stealth designs and I doubt thius problem has been fully solved.

@smeggy7979
@smeggy7979 6 лет назад
OK, nice information on the Stirling engine but tbh not entirely right. Diesel submarines only use their engines to charge batteries which they use to actually drive the submarine. This requires no moving parts so is damn near completely silent. This means the submarine when it needs to go quietly to attack an enemy fleet, it can run on just battery power typically for up to 48 hours comfortably. Combine this with the fact that the submarine puts itself ahead of the fleet, then makes any movement very slowly so as to not have any cavitation of the propellers which would make noise, and a non-nuclear sub can put itself on target with relative ease. The only advantage of the Stirling engine is that when they are charging the batteries it is quieter.
@dylanwight5764
@dylanwight5764 6 лет назад
Billy, do you recall when a single Collins-Class large diesel-electric boat infiltrated a simulated carrier battle group with full surface, air and submarine escort? We sunk your "CV" (photographed it) and proceeded to blast "Land Down Under" to announce our presence three nautical miles within your perimeter. This was effected under active surface sonar from all vessels involved.
@Scitch87
@Scitch87 6 лет назад
Also the Gotland Class 2 weeks of operations underwater isn't exactly new or longer than other Diesel Electric Submarines either. The German 212A class and their export variant are capable of operating for +2 weeks submerged as well.
@dylanwight5764
@dylanwight5764 6 лет назад
2 weeks submerged is pretty incredible no matter how you cut it though, considering the limitations of the chloride-based carbon scrubbers used in diesel-electrics. Obviously less of an issue on nuclear boats since they have power in surplus to use electrolysis to scrub their air, so you can look at three _months_ or more with nuclear boats fully submerged before they need to surface.
@Scitch87
@Scitch87 6 лет назад
Not saying that this isn't something to be proud of but the operating time submerged is often mentioned as a defining trait that no other conventionally powered submarine has, (Even in this video) which simply isn't true. For example the german 212A are capable operating for three weeks submerged without needing to use the snorkel.
@MHalblaub
@MHalblaub 6 лет назад
One German Type 212A travelled from Europa submerged to Florida over 3 weeks continuously submerged. This type of submarine works with fuel cells which are far more efficient to convert chemical stored energy into electric energy. The Sterling engine needs a generator to finally produce electricity. This also reduces the efficiency by several percent. Even an rather old Type 206 Diesel submarine (built between 1969 to 1975) was able to sink an US carrier. This is submarine has a displacement of just 500 t. Columbia still operates two of these.

Edison generators are permanent magnet motor as a generator of electricity. The field magnets move the armature magnets and copper wire coils. The commutator brushes pick up the electric power. This generator is moving without fuel wind or steam. If you add an inverter and transformers you can deliver any voltage AC power continuous peak power that is needed. The Edison generator was used in the Shell Oil 8000 mile per gallon car in the 1980s. The car is now an open patent use of the generator invented by Thomas A Edison but has not been used by car companies.

Николай Совков because unlike nuclear subs these diesel powered subs have to refuel more often. Nuclear subs can go years without resurfacing for fuel (In reality the crew would run out of food long before that point). Just to add: I'm pretty sure the vid is wrong on this. This is an "old story" in that it has happened several times before with other nations' subs (France and Netherlands). The issue though is not with that diesel engine making little noise. It's that that engine makes no noise at all, because it's turned off during the attack. The diesels charge batteries. During attacks, the subs will use electric motors only - you may already have the picture if you've encountered hybrid cars. Makes almost no sound. Other than that, it as mentioned has limited range. Nuclear subs are to my knowledge also quieter than Diesels using their engines. And these subs are also far, far smaller than nuclear subs. Let alone compared to the tactical submarine beasts... which could flatten a small country. So it's kinda like asking why you would have a tank, when a rifle is so much cheaper, harder to target and efficient: completely different purposes :).

Place a well off, low population country with rich natural resources close to Soviet/Russia, and this is what happens. Sweden also had the 4th largest air force *in the world* during the cold war, and in general had fascinating defense strategies that served to make an attack as costly as possible for Russia. Thereby ensuring that such an attack did not come.

@broadbandislife
@broadbandislife 6 лет назад
The Swedes switched to the Leo 2 simply because the Stridsvagn 103 ("S-tank"), designed starting from mid-Fifties and in production from mid-Sixties, had grown *old* and they judged it impractical to develop a new domestic design from scratch when such excellent imports were readily available. Good luck finding a single First World military that still has tank models of that generation in frontline duty anyway. Back in its day it was a plenty credible design, and it wasn't really intented to be a conventional tank anyway (the Swedes had other models for infantry support etc.). It was designed to be a topnotch defensive vehicle that could extract a dreadful toll on an invader. Also hardly the only aspect of the rather comprehensive national defense system the Swedes developed. Eg. did you know they basically built a three-layer Maginot line across the northern wilderness of the country? Turrets from old scrapped warships got a new lease of life as armoured artillery batteries there, IIRC... Not sure what that Stenvall dude has been smoking though. The Germans certainly used the country as one of their foreign test labs for military R&D (to circumvent Versailles restrictions) - through some twists the Landsverk company was mostly owned by major German arms manufacturers - and quite a bit of interesting and fruitful research happened, but the actual tanks produced could hardly be called "strongest in the world" however many advanced features they now might have had by the standards of the day. They were competent light tanks, the sort of thing that actually found export sales in the interwar period (and met Swedish military requirements), not heavily-armed monsters. Fun fact: in mid-Fifties the Swedes sold off 20 of their old '34 vintage L-60 light tanks to the Dominican Republic. 3 of these got destroyed by US intervention forces during the '65 Dominican Civil War - one of the very few tank-on-tank engagements *ever* in the Americas. (One of the hapless things got totaled by a M48 Patton...)

I hadn't seen or heard of radiation sniffers on russian subs. They must be looking for tritium, but I can't imagine that is super effective as detecting it is hard in air...water shielding would be even shorter ranged!
@KentLong
@KentLong 6 лет назад
Thats not a thing. First Nuclear subs dont release any tritium, and even if they did it would disolve into the surrounding water, and youd have not only detect it, but detect all the surround water to find where it is not to be able to trace a path.
@BeCurieUs
@BeCurieUs 6 лет назад
How do subs not release tritium? If they are using a single pass cooling system, tritium activation via neutron absorption will be there? And I could foresee using a zig zag pattern once you lock on to find a sub, similar to how dogs zero in on someone.
@HuntingTarg
@HuntingTarg 6 лет назад
No, but tritium decays into deuterium and a thermal Neutron, and thermal neutrons can produce more deuterium in the secondary cooling water that is released to the sea. So an increase in deuterium concentration can be detected by a mass spectrometer sampling the water. Also, any weak points in the shielding would allow some γ radiation to leak out into the seawater, producing β-decay and possibly positron creation. So the fact that Russia is using the technology is not surprising. How effective it is at pinpointing location by itself is another question.
@BeCurieUs
@BeCurieUs 6 лет назад
Tritium decays via weak beta radiation, not sure what you mean by first sentence? But the second part seems interesting, using on the fly isotopic characterization would be a nifty trick! As to the leaking gammas, gamma can't cause beta radiation unless you are talking about photofission which no regular decay gammas can do.
@ValleysOfRain
@ValleysOfRain 6 лет назад
I don't think it would be actively used in locating a submarine - maybe following a trail like a scent hound but that seems a bit far fetched. I think the sensors are more of a "Yo, another nuclear submarine has been here recently", as I imagine the radiation trail will disperse relatively quickly into the ambient background radiation.

Yeah, that's why carriers nowadays are surrounded by destroyers to screen for any submarines. And really, in order to sink a carrier you have to find it first. Good luck doing that in miles and miles of open ocean. Not even carriers with their scout planes were able to efficiently do that.
@anonypersona3189
@anonypersona3189 5 лет назад
In fact, you could even google where the US carriers are. worldview.stratfor.com/article/us-naval-update-map-may-30-2019 It's impossible to hide a task force of that size and the US doesn't even try because that's not the objective. Carriers are not supposed to be stealthy, there are supposed to be mobile airbases with more firepower than some countries combined. They are supposed to be "invincible" without dependence on stealth, hence why it's worrisome for them to have a sub virtually manage torpedo shots. Make no mistake, one of the best weapons on earth is a US carrier not too many things can compare.
@ShneekeyTheLost
@ShneekeyTheLost 5 лет назад
@@anonypersona3189 Keep in mind that the incident happened 14 years ago. USN has shifted doctrine ever so slightly in the intervening time to accommodate this. Small fun fact, the German navy had done the same. During an exercise with a US fleet, the German diesel submarine U-24 of the 206 class was only assigned a scouting role. The captain of the submarine felt insulted and thought that the americans would underestimate the capabilities of a diesel submarine, and decided to cross the "insurmountable" defense ring of the escort ships, fired a simulated torpedo fan at the carrier USS Enterprise, made a photo of the Enterprise through the scope and emerged right next to the Enterprise. Imagine how embarrassing it must have been to the captain of the Enterprise to have explained this to his superiors.

So unfortunately true. We dump trillions into ships which can still be taken out with weapons costing only thousands. Have you noticed that Russia has almost no carrier force and few large warships? It's because they know that in a major conflict all the warships at sea will be immediately sunk on both sides. No point in wasting your money like that. One guided missile frigate of today can do what every battleship ever built put together cannot do. One day we'll learn what the UK did with the Hood: big warships are just expensive showpieces that can't win wars for you, and they all can be sunk.

its also to make US sailors jealous that UK and French sailors can get hammered while the ship is underway. there was a incident in one of these games back in 09 where in a drunken brawl started on a British carrier that caused some pretty expensive damage. as punishment they were not allowed to drink for a month on board said ship. The joke was that the punishment was that Her Majesty leased the ship to he US for a month. Dark days indeed.

That's the right spirit 👍 Although it has to be said that they didn't really find a weakness in their military since pretty much every European sub is apparently quite capable of running circles around the US navy so that's just another one on the list. And I'm not only talking about modern Swedish and German non nuclear subs, that list also includes an older French nuclear subs and the first cases of the US loosing against other countries subs in wargames go back to at least 1981. I think the more interesting question is how well other navies can deal with those subs and if it is an US specific or a general problem
