How a Slime Mold designed the Tokyo Railway System

Imagine if a single-celled organism, single handedly, designed the Tokyo Metro System? Well, this actually happened when a group of Japanese researchers at Hokkaido University put a slime mold on a map of Tokyo, to see how it would connect between urban hotspots..

interesting. it seems that the mold network is more centralized and branches out from a center, whereas the actual network has less connectivity in the middle but more of a beltline. which makes sense as slimes don’t need suburbs.

Keep in mind that the premise is false. You were mislead in this video not informed. The mold experiment was done after the train line was designed, the interesting thing was they looked similar.

If a single celled system can redesign the tokyo metro system then maybe worker control of a company would make the company better for everyone.

The mold didn't design the subway. It made another version of it, which the researchers said was "rather similar" to the actual subway. Not the same. The molds are pretty incredible but your title is misleading.
@yaseiKen

Yeah i pause the video on which the 2 network (mold and tokyo) was shown and Im confident to say they are way different. First the mold network has less 'lines' while the Tokyo network indeed has more lines but more connected all around. It makes sense as the mold only consider the distance and location of each oats a.k.a hubs to create efficient lines while the actual Tokyo network had to consider the locality obstacles as well.

sounds like a self-fulfilling research: they placed the oats on the "hot spots". what are those? how are they affected by the existing railway? This was in 2010. Did anyone use it to design anything? google says,

The idea seems interesting but practically it still needs human intervention for planning out On the basis of human traffic , now some cities may have more significance than others thus having comparatively more visitors . Also on comparing the real and slime model , some paths are not there in slime (expected). Overall it can give a base plan, kind of prototype to work on.

I dont get...why thats impressive number one the underground developers would of had certain reasons they couldn't plan a route a certain way. Amd once the fungus found the designation it would then just lean off the waste also the most effient way is a straight line!? Those lines are anything but striaght. All the this is proves is tokyo undergroud is a state

I think the important thing is that the people only concluded that slime was "as smart" as people. The conducted tests to confirm their own bias, road networks that existed already. Its intelligent, only if you think people are
@truongsinh9955
@truongsinh9955 Год назад
I guess you could say that as the starting point, when humans don't know that other species are "intelligent," then we can only use ourself as the standard, but this mold example shows that ultimately human's standard is not necessarily the best one, given that the mold only took a couple days to achieve probably 80-90% efficiency compare to human taking decades to achieve 100% efficiency.

It's blows me away how US humans, when describing life separate OURSELVES from nature as if WE aren't the most destructive force in our world on Earth. Typical of US to pick and choose what life is better than the next.
