Coming up… an interview with a mystery singer who had 2 songs in the top 10 at the same time with 2 different bands but here’s the thing he never got any credit. Nobody knew who he was until much later. One of these songs was so massive it became the #1 song of the year beating out The Beatles, The Stones, and Elvis who all had big hits that year…. I’m taking about the #1 song of 1969… Sugar, Sugar by the Archies. This song is so catchy everyone was singing it then and is still singing it now. And to think the #1 smash was actually written for preschoolers for a cartoon. there was so much mystery surrounding the identity of this singer and his imaginary band that it was a trivia question that no one could solve for years… The Question was: What group never appeared together, never went on the road together, never interviewed together, and had a #1 hit... coming up we’ll get the answer from Ron Dante in this exclusive interview and the story of a song so catchy it hit #1 for 4 weeks in the Us and 8 weeks in the UK and inspired Def Leppard to write Pour Some Sugar on Me decades later.

Hey, music junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time. Especially today. If you remember the hilarious exploits of B.C., The Family Circus, and Bloom County in the daily comics page growing up you’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia. Make sure to subscribe right now to get the stories straight from the legends. Click the bell so you always know when our stuff is hitting. Also, take a look at our Patreon where we are releasing full interviews.
I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Stories you won't get anywhere else. So today we are sitting down with a mystery singer who had 2 hits in the top 10 at the same time, but he never got credit. One of those songs went to #1 for 4 weeks in the US and a phenomenal 8 weeks in the UK out-performing huge hits from the same year like Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones, Suspicious Minds by Elvis, and Come Together by the Beatles. The song would also inspire another massive hit decades later: Pour Some Sugar on Me by Def Leppard. If you haven’t figured it out yet I’m talking about the infectious pop ditty Sugar Sugar by the cartoon group The Archies... sung by today’s guest Ron Dante. Ron was also the lead singer of the band the Cufflinks who had a top 10 hit at the same time Sugar Sugar was dominating the charts called Tracy. He had both of these hits and no one knew who he was. He was uncredited. Find out why and the story of the #1 song of 1969 in our interview next. Here’s Ron Dante.
Do you remember this song? Leave us a comment about this all-time 70s masterpiece. What are your memories and thoughts on this song and the imaginary band the Archies and the Journeyman singer Ron Dante … he produced many of Barry Manilow’s biggest albums. What a prolific career. What do you think of his other work in other bands? Let us know in the comments. If you like our content join our community by subscribing to this channel below. I know most people sneered at"bubblegum" rock but it was so darn catchy that most normal people would sing along when their peers weren't around. I have a bubblegum rock playlist with I believe 34 songs. Fun songs should always be appreciated for what they are and enjoyed. Not everything has to speak to seriousness.

I created a Bubblegum playlist to play in the office where I worked (called it Bazooka Joe). It received more requests for volume increases than any other compilation I have ever created. People enjoyed bubblegum music far more than they admit. Ofcourse we didn't know back then that Bubblegum (and Disco) would come to dominate the 21st century Top 40.

I was "too cool" to admit that I liked bubblegum... In early middle school I liked The Monkees, but by late middle to early high school I was into the Moody Blues, The Doors, CCR, Iron Butterfly. In fact In a gadda da vida was the first album I saved up to buy, followed shortly by CCR's Green River and Proud Mary/Born on the Bayou on 45. I still have that 45. I saw John Fogerty live several months ago. And I unashamedly like bubblegum.

When I was a child, I watched The Archies Cartoon on television. That's when I first heard "Sugar Sugar". I love Bubblegum Pop. Both "Sugar Sugar" and "Tracy" are my 2 favorite songs from that genre. I knew Ron Dante was the singing voice of both The Archies and The Cuff Links but I never heard an interview with Ron until now. Nice get, Professor. Also, as a lifelong Barry Manilow fan (Barry was my mom's favorite), I'm a fan of Ron's for what he did for Barry's career. From 1973-1981, Ron produced all of Barry's albums. He also sang backup on many of Barry's most well-known songs. Great singer, songwriter, and record producer. Very enjoyable episode. "Sugar Sugar" brings back fond childhood memories.

I remember cutting this 45 off the back of a cereal box (cant remember the kind) back in the day when I was maybe 7 years old and getting it to play on my older sisters 45 record player. Its wild that this thing is still popular and also wild that you could get pop music on a cereal box... I first hear dit on a Saturday morning when the Archies cartoon came on TV - in those days - Saturdays were practically dedicated to kids cartoons and shows startung early on Saturday morning and going to maybe early afternoon. In our small town, there we only receieved perhaps 3 or 4 TV stations which were the big three TV networks (NBC, CBS, ABC and maybe a PBS station). In the early 1970s, when the lady in your life decided you were not up to her standard that became a difficult time for a man. The Vietnam War was still going on and so was the draft of soldiers. Like in previous wars, you had two options: - Wait for the draft and get what they chose for you - Enlist and choose what you would like to do I was lucky and they let me get training then off to Germany, instead of Vietnam. The song was just as popular among the German people while I was there. It is still one my favorites for all time! Regards

When I heard it for the first time as a kid in the 70's, I thought it was the Beatles because mum would play their records while cleaning and vacuuming the house we were living in at the time. Until I saw the cartoon The Archies on TV here in Australia. In Australia, they would play cartoons from 6.00am to 9.00am and then play toddler shows until 11.00am after that I cannot remember but I think they played UK sitcoms like Coronation Street. Except when we moved from Sydney to Broken Hill halfway through 1976, there the TV stations would not start until 2.00pm in the afternoon. So, no tv in the mornings instead breakfast play around in the backyard and then get ready for school (Burke Ward School was only 5 - 10 minutes' walk away - Broken Hill School).

Many other great and lesser known songs were also credited to The Archies on their albums. As a Fanilow of course I have everything Ron coproduced with Barry Manilow. @@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Hi Lilly, I started in college radio in 1984, and a little after that was my first time hearing "Social D." They were also in the studio for an interview. Cool you learned of them from POR.

What Ron said about “not perfect is what makes it great” is so true-and so relevant in todays world of lip-synching concerts, AI, auto tune and pitch correction. I’ve watched this interview several times. The breadth of Ron’s career, from singing to writing to production and writing some of the most famous ad jingles ever, is just mind-boggling. And he does a great job performing in the Happy Together tour, now underway for the 20-somethingth year. He seriously needs to write a book! (Although I kinda think he’d be very nice to everybody 😉)

I first heard this song when I was 14. I was getting ready to ride my bike, and of course, I had my transiter radio playing music. When Sugar Sugar started playing. Immediately I thought this is a hit! I absolutely loved this song. It's got a great beat and it's so easy to sing along to.❤❤🎉

Excellent interview, man. Loved it. This is a song that I’ve known for literally decades yet never really thought too deeply about. Nice to get the background from the man himself.👍
