My mentor picked my puppy for me, I didnt know what I was doing, so much that my first IGP prospect was an ovcharka. lol. I showed up to class and he right away said NO, i will get you a puppy. Now I have a nice GSD and an ovcharka. From personal experience, and new to sport gettig the right genetics for the job sure makes a huge difference! Haz , thank for this wonderful content (as always) . Educational ! Very Informative to hear how he selects his dogs for IGP and Breeding. As always, great to hear from the champs , esp... from Canada , and this certainly includes yourself. We don't hear much from AN LE, so it's a great treat to see him on your podcast. This emphasizes my dilemma. Do I get a puppy or year and a half old with proven raw material . I think of Haz bringing dogs from Holland. They ain't pups. They got the proven raw material to do what your goal is. Puppy's can be hit or miss.

That’s why you go to a breeder like Haz to find a pup. Someone like him can work with you to help make the right choice.

@@1packatak true. But like pointed out in this video, you can have Haz select the puppy personally for me, a year from now the dog might just be nervous or low drive or whatever. If I gave him a full 2 years to find the perfect year and a half old dog, I would be far less likely to have issues. But then I would not be raising it from a puppy but developing an existing dogs raw potential. Something Haz is an expert on is testing the young 1-1.5 year olds

@@erinheathermcintyre5063 I get what you are saying. A question would be what would your goals be? A good pet? A pup you could do some obedience with? A pup you want to trial with? In what venue do you want to work? And are you happy with local competitions? Or are you looking at the national/ international stuff? Going up the ladder in your goals will change the type of pup that will work for you. And my last question is what is your skill set? Is it more for training basics or do you have more experience? Once you start looking at national/ international levels your skill set has to be extremely high, as does your time to spend training. And so does your wallet😏

Hi Erin...there always a chance the pup won't work out despite excellent genetics in established bloodline/pedigrees..eg..see pup's lineage - sires, dams w igp 3s, igp 2s In fact, this explains why many IGP people will end up selling those dogs to active family homes.. Point is:..with any pup... No guarantees . Alternatively... you could talk to Haz at Shield K9 , let him know what you want, then, meet the adult dogs 1 year old and up by this age you will get accurate pic of dog's temp and drives. you will know if the dog has the temp, nerves, drives to do the work. It also helps to get 2nd opinion fr others who have been successful in sport , ideally someone who has titled multiple dogs in igp3. If you can't find ppl like that..go to your local Schutzhund Club for help. if that club is supportive of members, you'll find many members, who have titled multiple dogs in IGP3 very happy to help find the right dog.
