More than 50 billion shoes get made every year. Big manufacturers like Nike, Adidas, and Asics make them durable enough to last for hundreds of miles. But this also makes them very difficult to recycle. One Dutch company says it's figured out a way around this by breaking down and repurposing every part of the shoe.

Dealing with waste is a hard job to come by. We all know some manufacturing corporations/companies out there wouldn't put into any effort into actually segregating their wastes or ensure the safety of all their workers at all costs.

Ive been using a woodlands shoe for the past 8 years....its seen everything from grueling mountain treks to being run over by a car (the shoe is so tough that thankfully nothing happened to me). The sole separated once but i got it stitched back by a cobbler and feels sturdier than ever. If shoes these days were that durable to begin with i dont think we'd have 50 bil shoes in landfills

Better than recycling is second using. Means, that 90% of shoes (if you pay attention on the video) are almost "new" and worn for 10-20%. So these shoes could be easily given to charity organisations for second-hand usage.

Yes totally and the shoes that have damage they should just try to fix it again have partnership with the companies where the shoes come from re make it if possible and those shoes that are really hopeless to be re build will take this kind of process so less electricity more people to employ more Man power that would take longer maybe and cost much unlike this fast machinery

This is great news, thank goodness!👌 For doing our part to lessen recycling, i prefer buying old school shoes which last more than 10 years. These are stitched, comfy and most of all durable. The secret: buy 2 pairs of each, for example; 1. Adidas Superstars - 2 pairs, 1 in black/white the other in white/black colorways. 2. DocMartens chelseas, one crazyhorse brown and the other black. 3. Lastly, flipflops same. These are all more than 15 years now. i do not care about fashion. Hate those injection molded crap with neon colors anyways. 😂✌

Two problems: most of the factories where these incredibly expensive shoes are made are in the 3rd world by underpaid people who as seen in th video are applying toxic glue without ventilation protection AND companies would rather throw away perfectly good shows returned by customers rather than giving them to people who need them.

Like it or not, there will always be a third world to create cheap labour. It's never going to get better because that's how economy works. It doesn't work well of every country is rich and equal. Inequality is the engine for economy.
@carlosnino6476
@carlosnino6476 5 месяцев назад
Those issues aren’t so simple. Donating shoes in third world countries kills the local industry because why would you buy a shoe if you are being gifted all the returns? It happens in Haiti with clothing. Also, defectives shoes are defectives shoes, some are unwearable and will end up being thrown anyway Better to increase their wages for them to be able to buy themselves, and give them better work conditions.

The truth is that all running shoes can be recycled 100% and still perform just fine. It's just companies convincing us that somehow it's less than, because it costs them money. And in my opinion, most major running shoe companies actual over-engineer their shoes when shoes should have less sole, wider toe box.

Buy leather, cotton, hemp,jute and re-sole the shoe. If someone can make a sport shoe that can be easily resoled and cleaned, it will help a lot. Michael Bloomberg, one of the richest men in the world, has worn his re-soled shoes for something like 10 years.

It's great that there are companies doing things like this. I find it interesting that Asics says their recycled shoes are not made for performance, but neither are their other shoes. Sure, they cushion your feet, I wore Asics for the past 10 years, but that's about it. The shoes are actually not really helping you, our feet are capable of doing the work. Our feet need to be exercised just like any other part of our body, and shoving them into pillows that aren't even foot shaped aren't going to make your feet any stronger. We really don't need any of the special tech to run, we've only had fancy running shoes for a few decades, and people can still keep up when completely barefoot. Even the big shoe companies are lying to us. They know their shoes are bad for us.

I love Asics Kayano for years now, but Asics produces too many styles and colorways, some of which are really ugly. In fact, the Kayano series has gotten uglier over the years. The foam sole is thick and looks orthopedic almost. Thank god they've gotten smart and gone back a decade to offer a previous Kayano model that everyone loved/loves that has a more classic design. I think they need to have AI study which styles / colorways are most in demand and create more of that and less of the ugly styles/colorways like royal blue paired with bright orange and a huge sole. Same goes for Nike, Adidas, and other famous athletic shoe brands.

It's actually strange that we always talk about sustainability due to recycling instead of extend the lifecycle of the product. Because looking at all the shoes I worn in the recent years, the upperwork was still in great condition but it was the sole I weared through. And actually two of them were the same Nike Airforce and also of Vans I wore two. For both brands it had the same sole same everything as it are classics... if they would sell a new sole to let it get replaced by a qualified shoemaker I would certainly have done it, as I love the look of the more worn out sneaker. But unfortunately it is not an option in this 'Made in China'-society

Plastics are literally not truely infinitely recyclable like metals and glass are, every time plastics are heated and treated they get weaker and breakdown more (not to mention the degradation from used plastic products) 9.9999/10 times if you want to make something of even comparable quality to the original product you *HAVE* to use virgin plastics in some point of the process, the idea of recycling plastics is basically greenwashing, it’s basically like trying to polish a turd, you can do it - but it will still be a turd
