Handiya - Indigenous alcoholic beverage. An essential part of indigenous tribes of the Chotta Nagpur Plateau of Central India (incl. Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh) A fermented drink made up of local USNA rice (par boiled rice) by adding ranu tablets(made up of herbs, roots, barks and rhizomes which helps in fermentation ) and water. Made in "Handi" or 'earthen pot' therefore referred to as "Handiya/handia" It's a probiotic drink helpful for digestive and immune system but only when taken in right amount. This drink's preparation method is only known to be passed on by ancestors/forefathers of these tribes. Women and men both know how to make these. But mostly women are part of sale process of these drinks because most men work in fields and as labourers. These drink is very staple to tribal culture and therefore mostly every tribal household knows how to make these. Only people/customers who are financially not well off often consume this for as little as Rs. 5 or Rs. 10. The main reason why the sale got affected is because these drinks/alcoholic beverages are often sold in local markets of a town/city/village which were all shut down because of the nation wide lockdown. In all it's a very well documented video, Thankyou @newslaundry for brining us close to the harsh realities, struggles and effects of pandemic especially in backward areas and less talked about Tribals.

Mahua and Hadiya are harmful way more cheaper than Branded Liquors and are way more fatal than those. People tend to live short who consume these.
