Nothing blows friendships apart like having special needs kids. I find that the new friendships that develop after and because of special needs tends to be easier and go the distance. It is even difficult with family. Most parents with regular kids do not get the struggle.

I can only imagine how hard that would be. It’s such a different parenting experience!

Another thing that friends don’t understand. My daughter has 4living half siblings that are a huge priority for us. Each one lives in a different home. She was our grand daughter, before we were able to adopt her, so some of her siblings are our grandkids too, but we have another whole family now from her birth father’s side. It takes a lot of time to invest in these relationships, especially because it’s not safe for her to have contact with her birth parents.

Hi Katie, I've been frequenting your channel for a while and always find the information useful. I was wondering, how long does it usually take for your child to start visiting and move in with you after you are matched with them?

It can depend on your agency or where you live, but typically you will meet them not long after you are matched. For us it was a few weeks each time. Hope that helps :)

Hi Katie, i was wondering if you had an advice on what a healthy transfer looks like for a two year old. Its both the foster parents first time and ours ( they are traditional and we are kinship with the plan to adopt) and its clear we disagree on what a healthy transfer looks like. We think minimal back and forth is far less confusing at her age and would only continue visitation if she requested it. They want constant updates and connection before and after. They are very obviously extremely attached and i don't blame them... I couldn't imagine their position but where is the line drawn for what's best for the child and more self serving intentions.

This is a great question! Personally, I do think that if you can take the transition somewhat slowly that tends to work well. Some of the decision would depend on how well you already know the child and how familiar the child is with you. There is so much more we could talk about with this topic/your specific situation than I can fit in a RU-vid comment...but this would be the perfect thing to talk through in a one-hour consultation call if that's something you are interested in! We could develop a plan together that will find common ground between you and the foster parents, all while putting your child's needs first. If you are interested, you can book here: www.adoptinformed.com/consultation

Did you adopt out of state?

All three of our kids were from our state, but nowhere close to where we live :)
