In this episode, I discuss the effect of Adrenaline and Acetylcholine on heart rate. Adrenaline speeds it up and Acetylcholine slows it down. They both have their effect by modifying the conductance for ions such as Sodium, Potassium and Calcium across the membrane of the cells of the SA node. Watch the video to find out how :)

Thanks! Great video -- this is exactly what I was looking for concerning Acetylcholine's effects on heart rate.

@petercourt Yes, that's correct. That's what I said in the video. When it reaches the threshold, Calcium channels open, resulting in Calcium rushing in. Sodium is involved in the pacemaker potential primarily and how the membrane depolarizes to reach the threshold, but the overwhelming effect is due to Calcium causing the action potential. Hope that answers your questions!

Just an fyi that, physiologically speaking, acetylcholinergic agents actually increase heart rate when administered. Ach's effect on the SA node is weaker than the vasodilatory effects systemically (which cause a drop in blood pressure) and in response there is a reflex tachycardia (a compensatory increase in heart rate).

The explanation in the video still confuses me. Doesn't potassium want to stay around -92 mV, so if ACh causes potassium to leave the cell more quickly wouldn't the cell depolarize more quickly as well as?

it’s not specific as you didn’t view by which cns the epinephrine was released and to which receptor did it bound ?

Isn't the upward deflection of an action potential in the SAN a result of the inward movement of calcium ions, rather than sodium ions?
@Wolf3fd
@Wolf3fd 6 лет назад
Well the thing I struggle with is that if you use an overdose of Acetylcholine, it will increase the production of adrenalin due to its effect on ggl. neurons via Nicotine-receptors.... so the final effect will be what? It will cause tachycardia. Or?

I think it has to do with the sympathetic and pathetic nervous systems, or with the amount of CO2 in the blood. Google it.
