Today, we'll be discussing how AI is going to shape the PHP frameworks of the future.
For anyone in a hurry, here's my argument:
The currency of 'I have a new framework' is now virtually worthless. Chat GPT has made the process of creating new frameworks a hundred times easier than it was before. Consequently, new PHP frameworks continue to be released constantly. Whether they're written by human beings or AI appears to be unclear. Interestingly, I think the case could be made that Trongate is the last honest PHP framework. By that, I mean the last PHP framework built as a result of a human being having some thoughts and doing some typing. I use the word 'honest' because when somebody goes on Twitter these days and declares, "I've just built a new PHP framework," I find myself raising my eyebrows. Are they saying that they REALLY did the framework? All of it? Every single line of code? Of course, they didn't!
In any event, regardless of what I say, new PHP frameworks are going to continue to appear. They'll all fail. Benchmarks? Irrelevant. Modularity? Irrelevant. Small footprint? Irrelevant. Stability? Irrelevant.
The key factor that is going to determine the winners and losers in the PHP frameworks game is going to be ecosystem. So, "Does this framework have an ecosystem?" If the answer is "no," they're done. Best of luck. Thank you for playing. However, if they DO have an ecosystem, then it's "Hello Honolulu."
As things stand, I can only see two PHP frameworks that have anything that could be described as an ecosystem. One is Laravel. The other is Trongate.
There will be winners and there will be losers. I happen to think that Symfony is in BIG trouble. The same goes for CodeIgniter, Yii, and others. Remember folks, as far as PHP frameworks of the future go, it's all about ECOSYSTEM.
If you want to build a PHP framework of the future, build an ecosystem or go home.
Ahoy!
