What I loved about Roma and why I felt it was masterful was how often Cleo felt like the background character in her own film. The failing marriage, the rise and rioting of a nationalist group, growing up as a child in this hectic world, all these things could have been their own movies and were often staged and filmed as if they were. But Cuarón demands we pay attention to Cleo, who considers herself to be in the background. It’s only when she takes her own agency into control (by facing her fear of water) that she is honest with herself and puts herself at the center of the story. It’s brilliant

This is a great video. As a Mexican, Cuarón is one of my heroes, alongside Lubezki, Del Toro and Iñárritu. Just some little nitpicking. It's mamÁ, you pronounce the last syllable harder. The way you said it sounds really weird in Spanish and it could even take another meaning😂

Great film analysis Karsten, you have approve to show your theory of how Alfonso Cuarón, one of my all time favorite directors, have created his filmmaking experience? It’s what I enjoy watching his films and he’s becoming signature talented director so he show his ability to make his movie. He makes a subject matter focus during reference from political agendas and other parts that we audience must focus of what his story is telling into one major detail into another. Who know? Maybe I must go check of his films including I have “Y Tu Mamá También” was influential film that I got my Blu Ray Criterion Collection and others like “Children of Men,” “Gravity,” and re watch Roma in Netflix. Thanks for sharing analysis Karsten. My Top 5 Favorite Alfonso Cuarón Films are... 5. Gravity 4. Children of Men 3. Roma 2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (His adapted filmmaking captures more loosely like Rowling’s third film) and... 1. Y Tu Mamá También

“It‘s one thing to film a scene in just one shot to show how artsy and impressive you are with a camera“ This is film school in a nutshell, everyone‘s trying to be artsy and impressive instead of actually making a good movie.

Hey! First of all, great video. i wanted to tell you the importance of this videos, and your opinion of Roma. Im mexican and sometimes we are "to close" to the things depicted in Roma to see it objectively. Your videos/opinions show me a side of the movie that i never considered, the view of the world, how people from another country sees Mexico trough the eyes of Cuarón, how "non-mexicans" feel the movie and still call it a masterpiece although they never were in the country, they never grew with the things depicted in the movie and still praised it. I think that is great on Cuarón´s side but also great on your side for i know now how Roma (and y tu mamá tambien) touches something universal despite beign "too mexican"

Another story telling technique Alfonso Cuaron utalized in Y tu mama Tambian to demonstrate the current state of Mexico and it's politics aside from long shots is the narration over certain scenes. The scene where Tenoch and Julio are in the pool and Julio confuses to sleeping with his girlfriend the sound cuts & omniscient narration begins "Tenoch had only felt this pain in his stomach when he was 11 when he saw a photo of his father on an article that linked him to a scandal involving the sale of contaminated food to the poor. Tenoch and his parents moved to Vancouver for 8 months. Tenoch never asked the reason." Cuaron really captured all the subtle nuances of adolescence and loss of innocence in a certain time and place that feels so rich and authentic for the viewer. That scene and the one where they drive by the shrine on the side of the road where the little girl died in a bus accident gets me in my feels every time. It communicates Latin culture in a way that is just..... art.

I respect your opinion-piece, but I disagree with the sense of "progression" of his use of long shots (throughout his career) that you seem to be implying. In my opinion, all of the movies you mentioned (Y Tu Mamá También, Children of Men and ROMA) have masterful long shots, but they serve different functions.

Hogwarts legacy will be coming out in a few weeks, and I'm very excited to play the game, but I was somewhat nervous it wouldn't be good for me individually as I never have read or watched the movies. I thought the best solution to this was to start with the movies; I was enthralled by what I missed in my childhood, hogwarts and the idea itself is brilliant. As I got into the middle of goblet of fire, I couldn't stop thinking" huh, why did quality drop so much after prisoner of azkaban? It seemed as if I was watching a beautiful film series turn into something more on the lines of the second Percy Jackson movie. That was until i saw that the directors changed and it made so much sense, this was the guy that made fucking y tu mama tambien!!! literally became one of my favorite directors that I didn't know of after this.
