For online retailers like Amazon, Cyber Monday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and the company is using artificial intelligence to help with the demand. CBS News' Kris Van Cleave got exclusive access to Amazon's Robotics Research and Development Center, where it says the future of faster delivery is being built.
Each weekday morning, "CBS Mornings” co-hosts Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson bring you the latest breaking news, smart conversation and in-depth feature reporting. "CBS Mornings" airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on CBS and stream it at 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

Imagine that AI makes the logistic chain so efficient, it cuts out the middleman, such as Amazon.

I don't see that happening anytime soon. That company places itself in positions where it becomes relevant.

Let's also remember for a lot of the warehouse jobs there were labor issues re: pressured metrics (how many orders filled/hr), no bathroom breaks, etc. so you'd want these jobs to somehow become easier and/or replaced by robotics. There will be other jobs for workers impacted (which we should mandate the companies help train for). Forecasting demand using AI can easily help with scheduling workers and shipping efficiencies -- that won't necessarily reduce jobs, but definitely make jobs a lot less stressful (having worked in supply chain jobs for several years).

There's a difference b/w warehouse workers in China versus the US. In China they actually work the full time they're on the clock. In the US they work maybe 70% of that time. The other 30% is spent chatting with coworkers, hanging out, etc. Plus they're all unhealthy from our food supply which has dwarf wheat and HFCS as staples so their healthcare costs become a major burden to a company as well...

@@Chad_Maxnope. When I’m working at the warehouse, whether it’s a 6, 8, 10, or 12 hour shift; I’m lucky to even take a 20 minute break. I’m in the armpit of America too. So, nah, what you said is inaccurate. There are those of us who just wanna get things done and not waste our time that we’re there since we aren’t getting paid for our break time. I look at breaks, except for bathroom breaks, as a waste of my time and a loss of income. The federal government requires companies give breaks tho. Funny, the government shouldn’t dictate me when they’re already taking my money for taxes I never consented to to begin with. 😂

Don't forget, they are inching to creating a union because of the recent rule change in law where Amazon is now forced to view the employees through the DSPs as their own corporate employees meaning that they have to abide and take care of them or else let go of the DSP program and start hiring internally for replacing them only to still be faced with unions forming that way for drivers.

Fun Fact: Amazon has more PhD economist employees than any company in the world, 2nd only to the US Federal Reserve. These experts play a crucial role in steering Amazon toward becoming the diversified company that it is today, with involvement across various sectors of the US economy. Everybody needs to know that Amazon is renowned for being the most customer-centric company ever and they have the revenue to show for it.

Shopping at Albertsons / Kroger only by touch screen, zero shrinkage, perfectly bagged before you can get to the dumbwaiter delivery vault where you pull up and simply load your car and drive away, selecting the letters by live feed robotic Pickers with the heavy work done by robotics, existing stores become storage vaults eliminating wasteful aisle space into secure robotic product storage with a perfect rotation preventing expired product and robust availability. Efficient scheduled home delivery becomes closer to reality as once was the milkman.

I worked in an Amazon warehouse for a few months after a divorce and needed to find work. It was horrible! I was grossly underpaid, unappreciated, and hated every minute of it. I can’t (and don’t) support them if I can. There’s nowhere to go, working in their warehouse, but down.

We recently decided that there would be no more Amazon for us. Amazon charged us for something we returned in March, and to get it straightened out, my wife had go through a tremendous amount of steps 3 separate times to get to a human instead of a bot. The "call from Amazon" wasn't even an option. An employee at the UPS store said that the last year, Amazon has been a problem, but the last two months have been "a dumpster fire". She told us that a lady was in their store with the same problem as ours, but the item Amazon charged her for that she'd already returned was a $400 item. My wife had a hunch that it was because of AI. It doesn't matter how inexpensive their prices are or how many different products they offer, if there is no human customer service that's easy to access and computer glitches charging people for things they've returned, I wonder just how long people will continue shopping with them.

The beginning of the end of needing humans in your distribution centers and Amazon is the first to become that. Amazon being Amazon by Cutting Cost. Eventually robots and AI will replace humans in the distribution centers.

While a lot of people are concerned right now about AI taking over our jobs, for jobs like these, replacing humans would be great, though i do hope that by reducing costs at some ends will increase individual's pay, though seeing how its amazon, those cut costs are probably going to help raise the higher-ups pay.

BS. AI will decrease total number of jobs and will decrease the pay of existing ones. Since if a human is assisted by AI, you can hire someone less qualified for cheaper.
