Correction: the new version of the BUFF is the B-52J, not K Fun fact: at one point, the USAF was considering putting Stinger AAM’s in the tail to replace the tail gun, which itself varied according to the version. Most models sported a quad .50 cal machine gun turret but the B-52H sported a 20mm Vulcan Gatling cannon Here’s hoping we get a stealth and/or airborne laser version of the BUFF, ala Dale Brown EB-52 Megafortress or AL-52 Dragon Requesting videos on the following: -switchblade aircraft designs such as the FA-37 Talon from the ‘05 movie “Stealth” or the X-02 Wyvern from the Ace Combat franchise (the concept, not the actual fighters I mentioned) -Super Tomcat-21 and ASF-14 -the NATF program as a whole -early ATF proposals/McDonnell Douglas’ ATF proposal -Sea Apache -F-20 Tigershark -Bae SABA -Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Bomber proposal -Northrop’s proposal for what would become the F-117 Nighthawk -Interstate TDR -JSF proposals OTHER THAN the X-32 and X-35 -XFV-12 -Gloster Meteor -the proposals that didn’t win the F-X program that spawned the F-15 Eagle -Erado E.555 -model 853 quiet bird -the USSR’s Project P-2 submarine

I think you missed a quite significant use of B-52. They were used by NASA for high altitude research and more importantly used to launch X-15 rocker powered spaceplanes. Many astronauts cut their teeth on the X-15, and many other X-planes launched by NASA B-52 eventually give them enough data for designing the space shuttle.

*the clip at **5:06** is explained here:* On Friday, 24 June 1994, a United States Air Force (USAF) Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crashed at Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, United States,[1] after its pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur "Bud" Holland, maneuvered the bomber beyond its operational limits and lost control. The aircraft stalled, fell to the ground and exploded, killing Holland and the other three crew aboard. The crash was captured on video and was shown repeatedly on news broadcasts throughout the world. The subsequent investigation concluded that the crash was attributable primarily to three factors: Holland's personality and behavior, USAF leaders' delayed or inadequate reactions to earlier incidents involving Holland, and the sequence of events during the aircraft's final flight. The crash is now used in military and civilian aviation environments as a case study in teaching crew resource management. It is also often used by the U.S. Armed Forces during aviation safety training as an example of the importance of compliance with safety regulations and correcting the behavior of anyone who violates safety procedures.

I was an electronic warfare systems specialist- AFSC 45631A, at Fairchild, Spokane. Miss working on these planes. I don't miss burping the ALQ 155 coolant. Lt Col Bud Holland always pissed off our group when he flew. He stressed the hell out of the planes and all of our shit was always broke. He took one almost straight up off the deck during an airshow. Afterwards, we had equipment that snapped the safety wiring and was flying around in the tail. Looks like his hotdog act finally got him and unfortunately others in '94. Miss the days of these jamming systems though. I went on to building 3G, 4G and 5G cellular networks in the real world. Seriously i saw one of these in person and it was amazing, Hands down my favorite Bomber in the world, I love the B-52 Stratofortress. Even made a Transformers character with this as it's alternate mode. In short the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is indeed the B.U.F.F: the Brave Ultimate Flying Fortress.

The Palomares, Spain B-52 did not crash land, it broke up in the air and that is why bombs landed on land and out to sea.

I remember a few weeks ago, the US Air Force decommissioned an aircraft (can't remember which one) and an journalist asked when they were going to decommission the B-52. The Person in charge of the press conference told the reporter that they would get back to them on that one. A few days late, the Air Force announced an update to the B-52 and stated that it will remain in service until 2050 - which would make it around 100 years old. It's amazing how the Air Force can struggle so with the F-35, but the bloody B-52 remains in the air for more than 70 years.

But yet, it really depends on just how well Northrop Grumman does with the new B-21 Raider. If they can keep the cost down on that plane, the B-21, which will be far less expensive to produce than the B-2 Spirit, could be built in large enough numbers to retire the B-52 earlier than envisaged.
