The 17th century is considered by many to be the Golden Age of the Netherlands, at the centre of which was Amsterdam. During this golden age, Amsterdam underwent considerable growth and transformation, becoming the commercial capital of the world. This commercial dominance would also , be accompanied by societal changes. The 17th century saw the rise of Amsterdam as a global city, with an important role within the republic of the seven United Provinces of the Netherlands. This importance was also accompanied by a major urban revolution, which only served to accentuate the city's progressive character.
