I remember this. My generation still makes fun of Larry Craig’s “wide stance.” The mid to late 2000s was when seemingly every Republican senator, especially the homophobic ones, was secretly gay. It seemed to just prove the old adage that the more homophobic you were, the gayer you were.

Yeah, I'm queer and trans and it's considered lucky that my family supports me. It shouldn't have to be "lucky" for your own family to love you no matter what your identity is. I had a friend who said that they couldn't tell their mom they were gay because she thinks gays are influenced by the devil or whatever. It's truly sad that the world is like this. True story: I grew up (and still live) in Idaho and when I was 17 I won a peace essay contest and got to go to DC. All 50 state winners were supposed to meet our senators. I was brought to Larry Craig’s office as he was coming out. He didn’t talk to me but he did give me a real lingering up-and-down checkout that went on uncomfortably long. I had yet to hear about his orientation and this was a couple years before the MN airport episode so I just thought, WTF was that?? Anyway, an experience I had - leered at by a Republican Family Values Senator when I was a minor.

It happens lol. There are not a lot of safe ways to have lots of gay sex if you're closeted and want to keep it under wraps, anyway, and non-closeted people can join in as well. Historically it is not uncommon for murderers to target closeted gay people since the latter go off the radar to do stuff, and so people will take time to notice that they're missing. I'm not sure if the type of sting operation shown in the video is normal at this point, maybe in the more conservative areas... Of course, if I was a closeted gay senator I probably wouldn't be showing up in massive public bathroom orgies next to the Senate building, that's not exactly discreet

As someone who grew up in idaho in the 90's-early 2000's, admitting to same sex tendencies could easily get you hate crimed or beaten by the authorities. It was 100x worse when he was growing up. I was a hard core republican and self hating gay until I left the state in adulthood. Intolerance leads to more intolerance. In my opinion, guy never had a chance to not turn out the way he did (definitely not including the taking advantage of teenagers in this, that's just abuse)
