The problem is the speculation with properties and/or turning into Airbnb in central Athens/Exarchia. It drives out normal people with average wages. The speculation started after the crisis when property prices had dropped up to 60%. There was a chinese investor who bought 100 apartments in Exarchia in 2017/18 renovated and resold them later. Property prices and rents have significantly increased. Investors are "waiting" for the new Metro station because the value of their properties will further go up.
@thebookwasbetter3650
@thebookwasbetter3650 4 месяца назад
Well then average people should buy there then. Only problem is most people dont want to wait for the area to get better or take on the risk that it wont. Investors do. Thus the govt and surrounding communities will welcome them.

I missed the part of "how an Athens neighborhood fights the pressures of gentrification".... they have a free kitchen? Is that it?? That on its own can actually have a gentrification effect. The "creatives" love these places.. they move in because rents are cheap.. the neighborhood becomes trendy, politicians see the opportunity to "clean it up", rents go up, any traces of communal/occupied spaces are exterminated either by law or speculation. That's pretty much the basic recipe for gentrification that you laid out in this video.

@@postcollapse1170i think, that highly depends on your character and the alternatives you are capable to spend and life. Generally speaking, alternative districts are heaven and adventure.Generally very safe spaces. People mind each other throughly and your children would have liberties and experiences that you miss in a suburban suburb. Intercultural contact, arts, music, social awareness, community. Actually everybody I know, who grew up in these surroundings are very well integrated in society today as well. The political struggle to protect these oasis wont affect the raise of children in a bad way. The people there are often profiled as chaots, but they are very structured and kind indeed. 150% intellectuals. Peoples who read real books, not storys or newspaperss, people who DO. Just in an atmosphere where status and consumption is not everything, but creativity and personal development is. A community of equals, where everybody can unfold. You will never have that life experience in a suburban terraced hens apartment. If getting up at 6 to drive to work is more your thing, better stay there. If you need to organise yourself for factory or office: stay there if you are fine with that lifestyle. Thats o.k. Just that. The happy slaves from suburban areas often don't look very happy on their way to work. "because the hippies stole the happiness"? lol.

No, it's not a big subsidy, it's turning a decaying building into something that benefits the community - as opposed to a subsidized business who sucks tax payers money through the state and whose only aim is always to extract maximum value from the community and buy Porsches. I believe you sugarcoated the reality of Exarchia way too much and followed the perspective of this friendly girl that showed you the positive aspects of it. But the reality is that this area is also a safe space for militant anarchists and left wing terrorist groups and citizens like her, while they may not themselves condone violence, they’re turning a blind eye to it and they won’t miss an opportunity to blame anyone else than themselves when the city burns from the molotovs these violent groups are throwing.

@tomitiustritus6672
@tomitiustritus6672 Год назад
Almost as if the presence of the militants creates the space the first group enjoys so much. There didn't simply appear an alternative, creative, inclusive city quarter that then was invaded by militant leftists. The militants created it and they are fighting to keep that space open. Some go to far, of course. But those two sides of the coin are inseparable. Exarchia is a community that accumulated around an anarchist movement. The community is the very thing the anarchists tried to create in the first place. That's what anarchism ia about.

But Europe did not agree, and required Indonesia to export nickel in raw materials, and insisted on taking it to the World Trade Union court. Exporting nickel in semi-finished form can increase Indonesia's exports from 2 billion dollar to 30 billions per year and can create millions of jobs. The question is why is Europe so greedy that Indonesia cannot export nickel in semi-finished form? , Isn't this an act of greed and transgression?
