Booted eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus) - the smallest and most beautiful eagle, and at the same time - the most dangerous enemy for gophers. Prefers them to any prey, although it can successfully hunt other small mammals and birds the size of a jay and lapwing. Quickly finds gophers wherever they appear. Protected at the international level: listed in CITES Appendix II, Appendix II of the Berne Convention, Appendix III of the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Included in many regional Red Books.
Speckled ground squirrel (Spermophilus suslicus) is a species that is steadily decreasing in numbers throughout its range. In order to prevent the mind from disappearing, urgent measures are needed to create its reserve populations. Zoologist Sergei Sapelnikov, together with the Oleniy Nature Park, has been carrying out reintroduction of the species at the park since 2016.
