British Pop at the turn of the century was in a state. Spice Girls had been and gone, All Saints were still on top, but for the most part the focus was on personalities being used to sell the songs rather than the actual music. There was an overreliance on covers and trying to cash in on what was popular. Compared to the slinky American R&B of Destiny’s Child, TLC and Aaliyah or the Max Martin-backed confections of Britney Spears, N*Sync and The Backstreet Boys, Britain's crop sounded undeniably cheesy. But in 2002 Richard X appeared. A producer with a thing for synergising classic synth-pop with 90s R&B, and he, along with the Sugababes, a teen-girl group on the edge of collapse, revitalised British Pop with his ice-cool underground sounds. This is New British Canon and this is the story of Sugababes “Freak Like Me.”

I'm not sure if Gary actually meant that. Sure, he said it on TV and it can be quoted, but he's all coiffed and chatty on a popular British talk show. Their song was a hit on the charts *at and around the time he said it* (and he was getting money for it), plus, he was still eager to promote his career. I'm curious to know if Gary still feels that way, when he's not all dolled up for the camera and just talking with a beer in hand or off-record.

@@megamanmuppet He wasn't broke, but he got a buttload of money from the mashup. He's said the mashup made him more money than the original ever had. And he's and incredibly friendly and nice person, always surprised anybody would want to listen to his music, let alone use it in a top charting hit.

The amazing thing about Girls Aloud's songs is that almost every song is different in every verse. They never repeated melodies, outside of the chorus. Each verse brings a new melody, different line lengths. It’s genius song writing and endlessly interesting. Their albums changed styles every time, mining a different seem of pop music each time. I saw them live five times and they were the best live shows I’ve ever been to. I was never as big a fan of the sugababes, but I liked their disinterested vocal styles.

Both Biology and The Promise were such incredibly weird singles but worked SO well - even in my worst music snob days I was always fascinated by those songs' structure
@danpreston564
@danpreston564 3 года назад
@@CharlotteEarney both are great examples. The Promise, after the opening verse that just sits on one chord, just cycles between a chord progression in the verse and chorus (Bm, E, A) and a pre chorus progression. Yet the chorus sounds nothing like the verses, the melody is totally different, and the verses sound nothing like each other. You get the 'maybe next time' verse, the 'here I am, walking primrose' verse and the 'maybe it’s not that hard' broken down verse, all with the same progression as each other and the chorus, all with totally different melodies. The pre chorus has the 'had enough of looking into windows' version and the 'got my hands all ready to touch your soul' version. Again, the same chords with different melodies. So you get 2 progressions giving a chorus, 3 different verses and 2 different pre chorus'. Your ear, outside of the repeated chorus, is never sure which bit of the song you are in. It’s a brilliant piece of writing.

Thanks. The video the wholesale rejuvenation of British pop music deserved. Both Sugababes and Girls Aloud were - frankly, ARE - brilliant.

I don't know if anyone said anything previously, but I will point out, that Girls Aloud's "Sound of the Underground" did actually need to be a cut above, because they hadn't actually won Popstars yet at the time. The winner would be determined by who had the bigger opening sales week between Girls Aloud, and the boyband One True Voice. OTV went with the obligatory corny ballad, while GA went to Xenomania. The rest is history.

Great vid! I'm all about guitar based indie and electronic music, but you've totally 'got' why Sugababes and Girl's Aloud have always had a place in my music collection. One thing though, and you aren't the only person to do tnis. The phrase is 'change tack' not 'change tact'. It's from sailing, tacking being a term to use the wind to change direction. 'tact' ia about your skill in dealing sympathetically with difficult people/situations

I get an absolute KICK watching this video. This was MY era of pop music and boy was it an absolute thrill to live through it all. The first (and current) and second Sugababes lineups are just the absolute best. I think what made 00s pop music so thrilling is how polished yet also raw it was, you would find this tension and push and pull in a lot of these records, including those you mentioned throughout the video. You don't really hear that in present day pop records, because production has gotten too slick and refined. I was thinking of Calvin Harris as an example because there truly is a stark difference between his present day incarnation (Funk Wav Bounces) versus his earlier stuff (I Created Disco) despite operating in similar sonic terrains. That sense of rawness you find in a lot of 00s electronic or electronic-inflected stuff isn't quite there anymore, I'm afraid. At the same time, that's what made it so very special.

I'm a big fan of the 1995 original Adina howard track and the arrangement with the Gary Numan sample.really does make the cover all its own even though melody wise for the vocals it's the same . I really dig this cover. Thanks for introducing this cover to me

Freak Like Me was released when I was 18. I was already beginning to explore new music genres and had a casual interest in new wave and synth via TOTP2. But Freak Like Me got me really interested! In particular The Human League and Gary Numan which were featured on an electro compilation album around May/June 2002. The latter who is a firm favourite and have seen live about 10 or so times over the years.

Great little documentary here! And here is a freaky coincidence...I'd never heard of Adina Howard until yesterday night when I watched the movie "Relaxer" which saw her appear briefly. The booklet that accompanies the bluray stated she was an R&B singer in a rare acting role. The next night I randomly see this video in my recommendations and I see her name again.

I know he's got nothing to do with this or whatever, but when Gorillaz came out, his option was to submerge pop music and etc, but the process of how these tracks came into the industries is like how you said MUTATED POP SCENE ! but correct me if I'm wrong

The original trio of Sugababes went to my secondary school (Kingsbury High). They were in the year above me, so whilst I was there, they were most likely recording their first album. I never saw them on-site, but I bumped into Mutya outside a sweet shop in the area :) A few years later, I won a competition on CDUK to attend an AOL Sessions with the Sugababes (Heidi had joined). So I brought one of my good friends along, and upon showing them my yearbook (to sign), Keisha and Mutya got all excited and we started talking about school life at Kingsbury High. It was such a lovely day! ^^

Nice video, but Girls on Top - Warm Bitch was released in 2001, I know because I got into bastard pop bootlegs that way, hearing it in Sister Ray in London - Autumn 2001? I was already downloading bastard pop by Kylie's Brit performance via Boom Selection and a bit later GYBO. Check it on discogs, it was on Black Melody in green vinyl. Freelance Hellraiser's Stroke of Genieus was also 2001 (mid year, August?). And indeed I Wanna Dance With Numbers was released on 12" much earlier in 2001. And how do I know all this? I run the Bootleg Archive, mashup podcast Radio Clash since 2004 and making mashups as they are now known since 2003 as Instamatic and DJNoNo!
