How an OLD WOMAN Learned to Ride a Motorcycle 

I learned to ride at 58 also. I'm now in my 73rd year. It is good I didn't ride earlier as it would have destroyed any concentration or focus on my career. But, since learning I've ridden all across the US and Canada. Always, always, always remember, where you look is where you go. I'm sure you've heard that before, but it is true. And loose gravel and deep sand are not fun. I've dumped the bike a few times and now I no longer ride off-road. Good luck. BTW, all my buddies have quit riding and keep telling me I need to do the same. I don't see it happening. As long as i can get my leg over the bike, I'll still be riding. Stay safe.

Just found your video. I hope you still get your notifications on new comments. I am 69. I’ve had my motorcycle enforcement for about 15 years. I took the course got the endorsement, got a used bike. Drove it around for pleasure only then it broke down. Hubby used that opportunity to get me off of a bike. I had a brand new scooter (at the time) which I drove mountain roads to lake Taho. Got great compliments from the bikers. That was in my 20’s. I want to get a bike again before I’m too old to do anything lol. I feel like I’ll be a beginner again because it’s been so long since I’ve ridden. I really appreciate how you talk about taking to us on how you progressed. Thank you for this video.

You go! I learned as an adult also, at about 40 I think. I love riding, but I'll never be as comfortable in gravel as those who learned to ride at a younger age. Looking forward to your adventures, but I pray I never sleep on the ground in a tent again.

Nice choice for a bike even for a starter bike because the V-storm 650 is a great bike for Highway and for a little bit of off-road so to me it's a great choice for you. And I am over 60 and started riding again 4 years ago I ride adventure bike as well and do an awful lot of back roads dirt roads trails and Highway enjoy it all. My hubby and I camp on our bikes as well. We bring our tent and all of our gear on our bikes and go off road find a secluded area by a lake or a stream or River whatever and set up camp and I really enjoy it even at our age. Ok, I am 50 and started riding 2 mo. Before I turned 50. By profession I am a long haul trucker for 30 years and counting. My manual transmissions covered 8-9-10-13-&15 speeds. The hard part for me was unlearning right hand shifting for left foot shifting on my first bike, KLR 650 S. I am 6’0 tall with 32’inseam . Though the real Achilles heel to that is my size 18 (US size) feet. So shifting was clumsy and awkward. To say nothing of traffic and 79 miles in 7 months between road trips. With nearly starting all over again each home time being 3-4 months apart from the last one, I didn’t want to wait roughly a year to get those skills up to par since I know how to ride a bicycle. Though I never grew up riding motorcycles. Enter the trade of my 2023 KLR 650 S for a 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sport with Electronic suspension and a DCT, automatic transmission. WOW A NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE! me switching from a WW2 Jeep to a decked out Chevy Suburban in terms of comfort, tech, and buttery smooth handling! I felt like a kid going solo on my first bicycle ride all over again with the sense of freedom and curiosity of what lies ahead. So my first week after my MSF course, I took my new bike on a 200 mile road trip through the twisty backwood roads of Idaho and Montana. NOW THIS is what I expected learning how to ride a motorcycle should be like, learning fast fun and more easily. Just like riding a bicycle, only I don’t have to pedal going up hill and “coast” everywhere else😂. It made learning to ride so much faster and simpler since I didn’t need to focus on clutch and shifting that’s against 30 years of the opposite method while trying to ride in traffic. Since I am comfortable traveling in traffic with an 80,000 pound 18 wheeler in traffic, a motorcycle in the same condition is nearly identical for me. The differences are the same though. 60 mph in a motorcycle, car, and semi truck are the same. 60 is 60 is 60 mph no mater what. The 2 differences though the SPEED from 0-60mph-0mph. That will vary across the three as well as the leaning. Leaning required on the motorcycle, maybe a spirited car ride, but DEADLY in a semi truck, hence instinct to avoid leaning. Now it’s natural like a bicycle, but I seek to avoid excessive race style leans and rapid starts and stops that those racers often do. I prefer the “normal” car rate of changing speeds, a safer moderate laid back approach. I will get better with time as my bike is far more capable than my skills are, but not intimidating to learn on as I can dial down throttle response and up the traction control, anti-wheelie control and max out the engine braking. Then as I get better I can adjust accordingly. So I have plenty of time to…grow with my bike instead of against it like my KLR 650 S….it was a great bike, but not for my aforementioned circumstances. Yeah, 50 is not too old to start riding, but if one has not been raised around motorcycles then no shame in considering an automatic. Now BMW got into it also. Their 2025 1300 GS adventure has a clutchless shifting bike, though foot shifting I think is required unlike the Africa Twin DCT, just press D, and twist throttle from dead stop to full speed and let the bike handle the rest of it. One rumor has the 2025 KTM 1290 SAS coming out with an automatic and shaft drive combined. We will see how that unfolds.

You are doing great on the gravel roads and down shifting sounded good .. you learned on a difficult and challenging road which is good because you are prepared for the unexpected like feeling the bike slip in loose gravel , stones , etc .. Also the rounded driveway is great and challenging for the future off roads .. a person can’t get the experience on a smooth road

When I saw the title 'OLD WOMAN' I thought Bubba had over done the brave pills and was winding you up, but then I remembered who the editor was. Good on you girl, a bike if you are wearing the right gear is way more fun than a car, on paved roads its the sweeping bends, but always if you spot a track where it looks like people or horses have worn down then the bike will take you there too. You will know when you have passed the hidden test when you forget you are on a bike and just go down some old track or across a paddock as if you are just walking. I see the one handed fix the camera is a good start to confidence. The only advice I can think of is, with all of that gear in front and behind you, remember foot pegs are not just to rest your feet on, if you have to drop the bike at speed use them to push that chunk of metal away from you, you will slide a shorter distance without it.

You’re doing great. Keith Code has a real good video it’s titled (twist of the wrist) it explains counter steering and target fixation. If you can get both of those figured out it will help you in the corners.

Nice story. I'm considering doing the same thing at age 71. I rode as a kid, but its been 50 years. The only thing I don't get - how can you drive on the streets before you got your endorsement?

When I was a kid I ran up and down our country road, good practice. I'm 70 now so haven't road a bike in quite a while. I learned when I was on a black top. As you cruise down the road if you want to just move over a bit, take the palm of your hand and gently push out on handle bar. If you want to go right, take and push with your right hand. You would think you would turn left but you don't. I don't know if it has something to do with the wind moving over your tires but give it a try or have Bubba do it. The first time you do it it's mind blowing. Like wise if wanting to move left push out with your left hand. Hope you enjoy this trick I really did. I learnt to drive when I was 15. My husband and I would each take our two girls and go riding so fun. I even rode my dad's bike when I was pregnant, don't advise that for anyone. I was too big for throwing my leg over easily and the bike was big. I didn't loose the bike but felt like I pulled the muscles in my stomach. Baby and I were great, just wouldnt do it again. The reason I quit was every spring my balance was off because of my ears and on 2 wheels you need balance. Have a ton of fun with yours.

I road for years, wore out 3 BMW's with over 100K on all of them, the one thing I hate is bridges with the grating, it feels like hitting gravel, also be wary of Colorado after snows, they use gravel, instead of salt, and can cause scary spots, after blowing out my lower back, I doubt I will ever ride again

I learned at 56. Bought an 850lbs Roadking. Love it

I'm a 75 yr old Man just learning.

Trade that thing in on a Kymco AK 550!.....You can thank me later.....unbelievable comfort, power, groceries under the seat, no changing/shifting gears, brembo brakes, LED lights, heated hand grips, GPS or photos of your kids or your man on the center screen and 80 miles per gallon! Although it is called a "scooter" it is a full-blown powerful MOTORCYCLE!

I’m guessing deer might be an issue on those back roads, know many here in Colorado that either were killed or seriously injured hitting deer, be careful

Hi! I got my licence last september as a 60 year old. I noticed when you have changed gear you often stretch the fingers on your clutch hand for a few seconds. Is there a reason for that? I have learnt to ride with two fingers on the clutch lever and two fingers on the front brake lever. My clutch and brake are adjusted so I don't have to move my two outer fingers to use the levers. I have found this to be a nice way of doing it as I always have a grip around the handlebars with two fingers and my thumbs and I am always poised to clutch or start braking with the front brake should the situation demand it.
